Rosenthal's Rebuttal: "Orioles are cuckoo for not hiring Ripken"

First off, I stand by the story. Every single word.

Orioles owner Peter Angelos and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. have taken turns denying parts of my report from last Friday, the gist of which was that Angelos recently declined to hire Ripken to help his wonderful team.

Both declined opportunities to comment before I went with the story, and that’s fine.

Both dispute that Angelos told Ripken that he did not want Ripken to receive credit once the team returned to prominence — a detail confirmed by three sources — and that’s fine, too.

Why isn’t Ripken already working for the Orioles?

Why isn’t Brooks Robinson involved with the team? Why isn’t Frank Robinson?

Why is a franchise with such a glorious history not taking better advantage of some of the greatest natural resources the game has to offer?

The Iron Man’s public image is pristine, but ask any of his former managers, and they'll say he can be stubborn, controlling, quite political — a Hall of Fame pain in the rear...Angelos, the team’s owner since August 1993, is quite familiar with Ripken’s passive-aggressive tendencies. Any wariness of Ripken on his part would be understandable. So would any reluctance to create the perception that MacPhail isn't fully in control.

Put up or shut up then.

Hiring Cal Ripken to work for the Baltimore Orioles shouldn't be so hard.

Is it me, or does the rest of the article seem very defensive? He basically attacks Ripken and Angelos. So much for a well thought-out response.

Also, Mr. Rosenthal should do a quick search for his questions regarding Cal. He doesn't want to be a part of the Orioles until his kids are in college. This isn't recent news; he's been saying this since he retired in 2001.

When you are only interested in crapping on everyone involved, it doesn't matter what the facts actually are.

I'll admit I posted the first part of this article before I actually read the whole thing.

WOW. Really Ken?!? The reason this is a big deal is because you made it one.

Well, I have to say that I agree with Ken on this one. Nice to see him call out PA like that, all those guys should be welcomed by the team and if Cal wants to come back and help the O's, let him.

So you like all that stuff he said about Cal Ripken? You think that's appropriate?

That may be, but it's really not the whole point in all of this. Most of his article was not appropriate to the subject at hand. I think Rosenthal adds this just to stir the masses. Those few sentences will help him continue to have followers that support his argument.

In my opinion, this article bleeds juvenile retaliation and the mending of a reputation.

I missed the comment where he said Cal was stubborn, my fault I read it to quick. But I do agree with the part that all of the other guys like Brooks, Frank, etc., should be regulars around this club and that if Cal wants to come back he should be able.

I would really like to know the whole story on this and who his sources are, especially if he is claiming there were three sources

Umm...did he even bother reading Ripken's response? Or any other comment he's made about potentially working for the O's in the past decade? The whole "I'll do it after my kids are out of the house" thing? He chides the O's for not yet hiring him, but Cal's indicated he doesn't want to return to MLB yet...

Rosenthal's article is basically an internet rant of the "durrrrrr" variety.

I really don't remember the time when Rosenthal covered the Orioles, but did PA do something to him for him to go this hard after him?

Here's a 1992 article on Rosenthal's favorite player, Eddie Murray. Not exactly a flattering piece if you ask me. I wish I could dig up some others, maybe Tony can.

    • Sorry. Stepped away for a few hours and just saw this response. Just to be clear, I was specifically thinking of a pitcher more valuable than Cease. I do not think you give up 3 top 100 prospects (excluding our top 3) for Cease. I think it could take that plus more for a legit guy with more control.  Exactly my point. Not sure I worded it perfectly in my original post a few pages ago.
    • Those same people would be upset if we had traded for Robert Stephenson during last season.  However, they'd be thrilled if we gave Stephenson 3/39.   The dream online team is to have an all home grown group of position players headlined by a pitching staff of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer for next year.  Maybe people would be upset if we couldn't pull off a Beavers/Norby trade for Spencer Strider.
    • Orioles to open 2024 season at Oriole Park, introduce tweaks to home game start times - CBS Baltimore (cbsnews.com) This is just dumb. Some of us actually enjoy a Saturday evening out at a local sports bar or watching from home on a Saturday night. I get pushing them up pre Memorial day because of the cold, but mid summer? Just dumb all around.
    • Despite being a great pitcher, Nola had a bad ERA this year. I’m guessing the Orioles were only interested in the slim chance that he was going to end up with a below market deal with the Orioles being an attractive rebound destination given the wall and a competitive team.  I’d be floored if the Orioles were in on Nola at anywhere near what he got, but I suppose it’s positive they were at least doing their due diligence.
    • Of course people didn’t think he would. The stupidity of all of these arguments are these people who think it’s some ridiculous thought that people think guys who have been complete failures for their career are not worthy of signing and that the team should be aiming higher.
    • No, I don’t think they were.
    • Wait, don't drag me into your fight. I remember not being thrilled with the O'Hearn signing because I thought the cost of a guy who was going to be AAA depth at #1.3 million was unnecessary. I do also remember saying that he did have some analytics that suggested he'll be better without the shift. Let's remember though, I thought Stowers was going to be a semi-regular between RF/LF/DH and not buried like they did early in the season last year.  I don't remember anyone thinking O'Hearn was going to have the year he ended up having. Now I was probably the biggest voice against the Frazier signing and I was right. That signing never made sense for the dollar amount and the players already on hand. But this is a Uwasawa thread. Back to that.
