Arthur Rhodes -- still bringing it

40-year old reliever Arthur Rhodes has an ERA of 0.32 in 28 IP this year for the Reds, allowing only 12 hits (.135 BAA) and allowing only 2 of 20 inherited runners to score. It's amazing how long he's been a good reliever.

I saw part of a Reds game on ESPN recently, and they did a closeup camera shot of a hatless, sweating (and were those gray hairs?) Rhodes in the dugout just after getting a K to end an inning. My first thought was "Lord, he looks really old."

But you have to admire him for still being in the game, and for still being effective.

When I close my eyes, I can still picture him making his first home start aganst the Blue Jays at good ol' Memorial Stadium right before I went back to UMCP for my senior year.

Long live King Arthur!

Good old Arthur Rhodes. My favorite memory of him is when my high school marching band was getting ready to go on the Skydome field to play the national anthems, and Rhodes walked by and started clowning around with us.

What a great year he's having. It'd be cool if he finally got to make the All-Star team for the first time, but the chances of a lefty specialist being picked are slim to none.

I know Arthur, he said he wanted to pitch for 2 more years after this year, so I'm happy to see he is doing so well in Cincy. Maybe they will offer him another 2 year contract if he continues to pitch so well.
