IIRC, SD is up against their budget constraints. I'm thinking even Guts' couple mill would be hard for them to take on. Something to consider.

If the O's eat most of Guts salary, they should be able to get more value back in terms of prospects. This is absolutely a strategy they should consider.

This whole rumors make very little sense to me.

1) The Padres are #1 in pitching in the NL. They are 12th in hitting. So the rumors is they want to add pitching??????

2) Jerry Hairston is the Padres starting SS. So the speculation here is that the Padres, who normally value their prospects, are going to trade their #1 draft choice, Cumberland, who is tearing up the California league. Doesn't sound like the Padres at all.

3) With Adrian Gonzalez a prime suspect to be traded at some point in the next year. The are going to trade Blanks because he is having a down year.

I am not saying any of this is not right because strange thing happen in baseball, but this may rank up there with the strangest.

Yea, its time to start making some things happen.

This could be quite an interesting pairing. Hoyer is much younger than AM and a fast-paced workaholic. AM's usual style may cause him to get fed up and look elsewhere.

I guess the Padres are looking for pitching because their rotation is pretty young and may be up against innings limits. They may have also decided that the bat they need would have to be so big that it's hopeless and they should work on preventing even more runs.

That and they have some guys likely pitching over their heads IMO.

Their pen is very good.

The talk was that they would use Bell to go get a bat..Maybe they still will but they have made it a 6 inning game right now. They should keep Bell until the offseason unless he fetches them a young stud bat under control for a while.

So, go get guys like Scott who are still big upgrades but won't cost you any of the main pieces of your team.

What is SD going to do about Adrian Gonzalez? That has a huge impact on whether they would trade Blanks.

Not to worry. No way in hell is Blanks coming here for a someone like Guthrie. I just don't understand the rationale of people on this board who think Guthrie is going to net us a solid prospect. It's not happening my friends:)

While you're right that Guthrie is not going to land us Blanks straight up, you're way undervaluing Guthrie. Guts has been a producer in a small ball park in the most difficult division in the most difficult league. That's nothing to sneer at. The Padres are smart to be targeting him.

Why so venomous?

I think it's because Guthrie always seems to lose, whether it be a great performance with no run support, or his own doing. So, all of the losing (whether his fault or not), plus always at or near the top in homers allowed, hit batters, etc, has made him kind of a downer to watch.

    • I remember him from his time with the Braves when I was in Atlanta. This is from the 'Rick Camp Game' in 85.
    • I don’t think his lack of command in the early going is going to be fixed by changing roles.  Irvin typically has very good command.  He didn’t at the beginning of last year, but recovered it after a stint in the minors.  This year he’s having early problems again, but I think the reasons may be different.  He’s gained velocity and he’s added a new pitch that moves well but he hadn’t quite figured out how to command.  So, I don’t know if he’ll figure it out or not.  If he does, he could emerge a better pitcher than at any previous time in his career. In any event, he will get at least two more starts before Means is ready to return.   Hopefully he’ll make some progress, but he’s likely to find himself in the bullpen when Means returns regardless.
    • Irvin is probably the most frustrating pitcher on this team right now. He has good velocity and good movement, but consistently misses his targets by a foot or two. Monday night the Twins hit a number of missiles that by luck or pluck didn't fall in, but a better team would have probably put up a touchdown against him. I think Irvin would have more success out of the pen, throwing as hard as he can for 20 pitches, rather than as a starter where he has to hold back a little so as to eat innings. Of course that's not going to resolve his problems with lack of command, but at least he'd be in a position to do less damage out of the BP than by starting every fifth day.
    • As some people have noted on the Holliday thread, a quick release can help make up for less than a rocket arm and he's quick and has good hands.  Seems to work well with Gunnar too.
    • He’s been murdering a lot of balls.  99th percentile in average exit velocity, 97th in hard hit rate.  He’s been a little unlucky, with a .331 xOBA, .361 xwOBA going into last night.
    • It's only somewhat relevant to this post, but that game saving catch in Seattle, and the subsequent game winning home run is quite possibly the most impressive thing I ever saw within one inning of  each other.Cedric Mullins did that. I watched Willie Mays for most of my life...I simply dont think he ever did that...certainly not in extra innings and so close those moments were together.
