Shaving cream pie puts last year's Rookie of the Year on the DL

Florida's Chris Coughlan went on the DL after getting hurt Sunday trying to hit a teammate with a shaving cream pie.

If he needs surgery he would be out 6 to 8 weeks.

Fortunately the Orioles have managed to avoid this type of injury by winning so few games and making these dangerous pie celebrations unnecessary.

That's a real bummer! Chris is a nice story - grew up in Montg'y County with Cal as his hero and moved to FL after his dad was injured in a SWAT event. His dad was killed in a car accident afterward on the Eastern Shore (Pittsville) and he turned to baseball as an outlet. My first thought, however, was that Cal would have waited until the end of the year to have the meniscus fixed. ;) I joke, of course, but in a season of lost hope with the O's, I always looked at him as the Cal prototype. Now he too is out....:(

"In Miami, where the Marlins play, and in the Tampa area, where Coghlan went to high school after his family moved there when he was 9, folks rightfully claimed Coghlan as their own. But in Montgomery County, amongst those old cops, there was a small ownership stake in Coghlan's story as well. To them, he was still No. 8 (like seemingly every kid athlete in Maryland in those days, he chose Cal Ripken's number), still the best player on the field."

Oddly, the number eight, besides being his number on the field, was the first day he played in MLB (5/8/2009) and the Marlins team record for consecutive multi-hit games (8) which he set last year .:clap3:

Chris was chosen in the 2006 draft out of UMiss in the sandwich round (36th overall). Let's see who did we draft in 2006 - Lincecum? No - oh wait......sour grapes!

True, but Bergesen getting injured during a commercial, and Scott getting injured during a HR trot are still pretty close on the ridiculous scale.

Yeah you've got those 2, Kendry Morales getting injured on a walk off HR, and now this. What's up with this outbreak of freak injuries?
