Davis has been impressive at the Orioles mini-camp at Camden Yards. He'll most likely patrol CF for Delmarva next spring.

Tony,

That's a pretty impressive jump from Catonsville CC to full season ball.

What do you think that means for Mummey? Switch to corner or up to Frederick?

Even though Mummey struggled a bit at Delmarva I could see him starting in Frederick next year in CF. As for Davis, with John Stockstill subscribing to the theory of it's more important to get guys at bats than it is so much which level they are at, I think we'll see some guys like Davis pushed a bit. I think this is a good thing. Unless he's totally overmatched, why not push him a bit and see what happens?

I think we'll see Brendan Webb pushed as well to Delmarva but he could end up at Aberdeen as well.

I guess the easiest answer is simply that there are 1000s of players out there and some are always going to fall through the cracks. It is just nice that the Orioles are the one getting the break this time.

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if this is someone with whom the area scouts weren't familiar. He was a NJCAA Div II All-American nominee, NJCAA All Region 20 Team selection, and All-Maryland Conference First Team selection.

More likely, I think there are legit concerns about quality of competition and scouts were unconvinced he would play as an infielder (which seems to be true, as BAL is shifting him to the OF).

Definitely a nice move by BAL to jump on him after getting another look this summer. My understanding is his athleticism stood out enough to make a shift to center field as a realistic possibility and his summer performance (though it was only 7 games, 22 ABs) showed his game has some promise with wood. I would personally view this as somewhere between a Kyle Hudson and Xavier Avery signing. He seems to have more offensive upside than Hudson, though we'll have to see how he handles advanced competition.

I'd be curious to hear what the instructors at OPACY had to say about the current state of his reads and routes. If he can make a solid transition to CF, have to think he has a shot to provide value in the field at minimum, given his foot speed.

Pretty good assessment since I was told he was probably a late 2nd round-3rd round talent. It's too early to have a good grasp of what he projections are but he's a nice guy to add to the system. Good job by the Orioles new scout in the Baltimore Area (Chris Gale I believe) and of course Dean Albany the crosschecker.

Once in a while I stumble into a good assessment. :)

Completely agree it's great for BAL to scout well around home.

    • Does Cowser win ROY with 9.9 rWAR?
    • Friendly reminder that even the quickest numbers to show significance like strikeout and FB rates take 60-100 at bats to become more signal than noise. And things like SLG and OBP take the better part of half a season before you can start trusting them. Batting average is well over the number of PAs anyone has ever gotten in a season. Drungo's First Rule (or at least some rule of mine): Never trust anything before Memorial Day. And don't get too comfortable until well after July 4th.
    • So, what's our total team WAR now and what does it project to?
    • I don’t think Hays will cause locker room issues, but this was precisely the reason why I wanted to see Hays shopped this past offseason. I get it that Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers aren’t proven, but you have to think one of them would break through this year. Now it’s entirely possible Elias tried to trade Hays and didn’t like any of the offers received. Hays ceiling as a hitter is only going to be so high with his free swinging approach.
    • Yeah Hays is a team guy. I'm sure he's bummed and dealing with it internally, but I have no concerns about him effecting clubhouse chemistry.
    • I'll be the pedantic one and point out that it's not really a projection to multiply 1/9th of the season by nine and come up with a full season's performance. Because 1/9th of the season is almost certainly not representative of the talent or expected performance of the players in question.  To get a true projection you should take a little less than 8/9ths of your preseason projection, add in what they've done since opening day, and then toss in the little bit of additional knowledge we've gotten from the past 18 games. If you thought Jordan Westburg was a 2.5-win player on opening day, it's probably reasonable to think he's a 2.7 win player today.
    • It hasn't impacted his best friend, Ced. I doubt it impacts anyone but Hays.
