Gonzalez injured his shoulder in Houston in May and said he spent the rest of the season undergoing treatment and "protecting" the area by altering his swing. Though Gonzalez has said he wasn't able to "swing for home runs" for fear of a shoulder flare-up, he finished the season with a .298 average, 31 homers and 101 RBIs.

I wonder what this does for his trade value and availablity?

Anytime a player has a shoulder injury, sepecially one that forces him to change his mechanics, his value is going to tank.

I also would think this decreases his availability as San Diego is not going to trade him at his lessened value.

The Padres are expected to listen, but with Gonzalez making just $5.5 million next season and the Padres’ successful 2010 season leading them to believe they could only make themselves weaker without him, the pricetag in terms of talent would be enormous.

How big? For example, one executive said a package of outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury [stats], infielder Jed Lowrie and first base prospect Anthony Rizzo would not be enough. Would the Red Sox even consider such a deal in the first place? Assuming they would and it would not be sufficient, the names of starter Casey Kelly or shortstop Jose Iglesias will start to get mentioned.

What would a comparable package be for the Orioles?

But even with the shoulder injury, AGon still had 33 home-runs.

Yeah, a shoulder on a position player doesn't scare me near as much as on a pitcher. Was just wondering if it might be a little less than what he said. Like an A- deal instead of A+.

The information is probably dated, but still, what it would take to make the deal isn't worth it.

Once again, why would the Padres trade AGon this winter? They were one game from making the playoffs. I will repeat myself and reiterate that they were one game from making the playoffs. If anything, they want to build around him to make the push next season. If they aren't close, you'll see them trade him in July. Has all logic left this place and people are grasping at straws to make new threads because it's the offseason?

While the Padres could still get a decent haul for him in July, they would be able to get a better package in the off-season when more teams are in the bidding.

Awesome, let's trade for damaged goods.

Anyone out there having knee surgery? What about some pitchers with torn labrums, let's stock up on them too.

Hold on, isn't trading someone when their value is bottoming out the best time to trade? You know, so you can get something out of them, cutting your losses. Silly to wait until they're completely useless. Like how the O's have to trade Tillman and Bell right now.

Plus, if he was only half-swinging to protect his shoulder, and he played in PETCO, you can pretty much guarantee a healthy Gonzalez would hit 70-90 homers a year in OPACY.

This may be the only time the O's have the opportunity to trade Josh Bell straight up for the New Babe Ruth. Can't wait for Buck to force Andy to move on this.

You're absolutely right. Perhaps we should bring Machado up right away, watch him fail miserably so we can ruin his trade value and then send him for an injured player like A-Gon.
