Back to Reyes.

I wonder what I would do if I were the Orioles. The contract issue here is paramount. I wouldn't do anything unless I could figure that out in advance of pulling a trigger. That issue alone makes any trade for Reyes very unlikely.

But, assuming it was somehow worked out, he would be a very interesting risk/reward consideration. Reyes is as dynamic of a SS as their is in MLB, when healthy.

If we could trade for him for, say, 75 cents on the dollar, and resign him to a Markakis-like contract, it would be a huge risk but I'd do it.

The probabilities are likely quite low if only because of his contract situation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets did this for a package headlined by Guthrie (Tillman, DH, Pie are other possibilities to be included), given their SS depth in the minors.

If we can add either Wright or Reyes plus Bay we will have improved in a major way. I think Alderson will try to dump Bay who didn't seem to fit in NY and I think he would do well at OP. He has hit well at OP with the Sox and Pirates over the years. I don't think he is big city player although playing in Boston is pretty stressful I would think. If they will eat part of his salary and add in Wright or Reyes we should make the deal ASAP. I think the NY people would be okay with the Mets moving Reyes and Bay together rather than Wright and Bay. They need to rebuild a little bit and with a few key pieces can be right back battling the Phillies in 2011. Reyes of course will need to be signed to an extension. $11 mill in 2010. Hopefully 4 years for $48 mill will get it done. I would try for Wright and see what it would take but if the Mets want too much I move over and try to get Reyes and Bay.

Does the Juan Samuel return improve our chances to obtain Jose Reyes from the Mets? Both are from the Dominican and they obviously know each other. We need to sign him to an extension if we deal for him and he would help us solidify the SS position for the next five years if we obtain him.

Sandy Alderson's first move as the Mets' new GM was to lock up Reyes for 2011. Reyes, who started 2010 on the DL due to a hyperactive thyroid and missed time due to a strained oblique, hit .282, with 29 doubles, 10 triples, 11 home runs, 54 RBI and 30 stolen bases. The challenge for Reyes will be to prove he is fully healthy and be the catalyst at the top of the Mets' batting order in order to earn a big contract as a free agent in 2012. He stole 60, 64, 78 and 56 bases from 2005 - 2008 in consecutive years. He missed most of the 2009 season and missed 29 games in 2010. When he plays he is more disruptive on the bases than BROB and we know how he intimidates pitchers when he is on base. Since 2007 BROB has stolen 50, 40, 30 and 12 bases playing in only 59 games. Who is the better leadoff hitter between the two? Would Reyes be better leading off or Roberts? Both are switch hitters. Victor Martinez who they are also believed to be interested in for 1B, catcher and DH is also a switch hitter with a career .300 BA.

As I mentioned earlier the word out of NY is Reyes will get a 4 or 5 year deal for $12 million per year. He would offer top of the lineup protection if Roberts has any more aches and pains in 2011 and would make the top of the lineup dynamic and give our 3-4-5 hitters more fastballs to see plus more RBI potential.

Do we make a move for Reyes or go the cheaper route and sign Peralta or Uribe? Uribe has done a nice job at 3B and that would probably be his position with the Orioles if we obtained him although he also plays SS and 2B. Another Dominican connection as Uribe is from there as well. Would we be satisfied with Uribe at 3B and Reyes at SS to start the 2011 season if we are able to land a power guy for 1B?

Could Juan Samuel have any influence on either decision?

    • I remember him from his time with the Braves when I was in Atlanta. This is from the 'Rick Camp Game' in 85.
    • I don’t think his lack of command in the early going is going to be fixed by changing roles.  Irvin typically has very good command.  He didn’t at the beginning of last year, but recovered it after a stint in the minors.  This year he’s having early problems again, but I think the reasons may be different.  He’s gained velocity and he’s added a new pitch that moves well but he hadn’t quite figured out how to command.  So, I don’t know if he’ll figure it out or not.  If he does, he could emerge a better pitcher than at any previous time in his career. In any event, he will get at least two more starts before Means is ready to return.   Hopefully he’ll make some progress, but he’s likely to find himself in the bullpen when Means returns regardless.
    • Irvin is probably the most frustrating pitcher on this team right now. He has good velocity and good movement, but consistently misses his targets by a foot or two. Monday night the Twins hit a number of missiles that by luck or pluck didn't fall in, but a better team would have probably put up a touchdown against him. I think Irvin would have more success out of the pen, throwing as hard as he can for 20 pitches, rather than as a starter where he has to hold back a little so as to eat innings. Of course that's not going to resolve his problems with lack of command, but at least he'd be in a position to do less damage out of the BP than by starting every fifth day.
    • As some people have noted on the Holliday thread, a quick release can help make up for less than a rocket arm and he's quick and has good hands.  Seems to work well with Gunnar too.
    • He’s been murdering a lot of balls.  99th percentile in average exit velocity, 97th in hard hit rate.  He’s been a little unlucky, with a .331 xOBA, .361 xwOBA going into last night.
    • It's only somewhat relevant to this post, but that game saving catch in Seattle, and the subsequent game winning home run is quite possibly the most impressive thing I ever saw within one inning of  each other.Cedric Mullins did that. I watched Willie Mays for most of my life...I simply dont think he ever did that...certainly not in extra innings and so close those moments were together.
