Sparky anderson died

I always rooted against his teams, but he was impossible to dislike.

I'll always recall meeting him a few times at Memorial Stadium, and he was an autograph collector's dream when it came to corresponding by mail. RIP, sir.

He was famous for hyperbole and mangling the language from time to time, but he said something once like "Good character is something that nobody can take from you. Only you can give it away." I've always remembered that.

The thing I will always remember about Sparky was how he talked up his young players. He always thought they were going to be great -- or at least, that's what he wanted them to think. He was a real positive thinker. And of course, he did get to manage a lot of really great players.

RIP, Sparky.

The one that stood out for me was a guy named Chris Pittaro who he went on and on about.

SI compiled a great list of Sparky quotes a while ago. I would have liked that guy to write my year-end review at work. RIP, Sparky.

I never got to see his Big Red machine teams of the 70's since I was born in 1987 but I do remember him as the manager of the Tigers the first years I really got in to baseball. Just a great guy. I read Game Six, a fantastic book about the Reds and Red Sox in the 1975 World Series over the summer. Had no idea that Sparky had learned the tools of the trade from the famous manager of USC. RIP Sparky, there's probably a team that needs a manager up there.
