Newest "Futures" Commodity: D.R. Prospects

Article in the NY Times describes how some US investors are basically creating a new investment market in young Dominican players, some by financing buscones, others by creating private baseball academies. The payoff is a large share of their signing bonuses--as much as 50 per cent, according to the article.

Investors include Brian Shapiro, the NY hedge fund manager who partnered with Reggie Jackson in an attempt to buy the Oakland A's a few years ago.
