The Orioles absolutely need to find a third baseman, and I'm not at all convinced Beltre isn't the kind of player who only puts up good numbers when he's in a walk year. I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a lot more worry about this.

The Orioles also should definitely sign Dunn. He's a monster hitter who you put in the cleanup spot and watch him aim for the warehouse. This team hasn't had that kind of transformative, 40-HR type hitter, in a long time. The fact they're completely disinterested in him is baffling to me. But hell, they've only been losers every year since I graduated high school, what do I know?

I am with you on Beltre. I don't like that history and I don't need a guy shutting down on the team the second they are out of it and he has his money. You can say all you want about Seattle but the park isn't THAT much of a black hole.

With you on Dunn too. Overpaying Dunn is less of a problem financially than overpaying Beltre/ V-Mart. That is to say, Overpaying Dunn and his bad contract would probably be less of a problem than Beltre's potentially awful deal.

Well, if that's the logic you want to use, then so are Reynolds and Lee. You want to have it both ways but you can't.

And I am in total agreement about the parks keeping his stats down some..But the other side to that is you are now signing him to a contract where he will be much older...So, his stats are likely to be worse because of that...at best, you may see these things cancel out and him continue to be a 780-800 OPS hitter over the 5 year period.

You are pronouncing Derrek Lee done, at age 35 and Lee has been a better hitter than Beltre for his entire career..and he was also very good defensively at his position. Now, if we sign Beltre to a 5 year deal, that means you are getting 2 seasons of him being done, at least by your definition of Derrek Lee...the guy who has been a better hitter and even more durable in his career..even though beltre has also been pretty durable.

So, you are really getting 3 years from Beltre and one of them is a year where we aren't contending, 2011.

On top of all of that, Beltre isn't a player that is going to fit your mantra of making everyone else around him a better hitter. Unless he is on a hot streak, if I am a pitcher, i am pitching to Beltre before Markakis.

Not to go all mweb on you or anything but I must say, I am "surprised" that this didn't get a response.

Why some people are fixated on wining and dining along with timing is beyond me. That stuff is not important. You want to say look at the results, and I'm fine with that. When doing so, it's obvious that the lack of desire to offer enough money to land the players is what led to the given results. Not how quickly they made the offer or how much wining and dining they did.

More about Cabrera's recruiting VMart:

Miguel Cabrera knew the Tigers had some financial flexibility this winter, so he told GM Dave Dombrowski he’d be happy to help the team recruit free agents. Dombrowski took his first baseman up on the offer and told him to call up Victor Martinez. Just three weeks into the offseason, Cabrera and the Tigers accomplished their goal, luring Martinez to Detroit with some persuasive words and a four-year, $50MM contract.

Martinez drew strong interest from "at least six teams," agent Scott Pucino said on a conference call with reporters. Martinez says Cabrera’s recruiting was "a good part" of his decision to sign in Detroit, but it wasn't the primary reason he turned down other offers.

Why the Orioles aren't using their current players and former players to do this, I'm not sure. It wasn't the primary reason he signed, but I'm sure it did influence him.

The bottom line is recruiting does matter and the Orioles suck at it.

Didn't Brian Roberts give a call to Matt Holliday last off-season?

On his own accord. The Orioles did nothing to follow it up though. Roberts wanted Holliday to be an Oriole as the two had even talked about being on the same team previously, but the Orioles didn't take advantage of that connection.

If I'm the Orioles, I'm asking Brooksie to have a sit down meeting with Beltre...

He said he was willing, so Dombrowski asked him to.

Roberts said he's talked to Matt Holliday, one of his best friends, over the last few days. He's still campaigning for Holliday to sign with the Orioles.

In an unrelated story, Roberts also was the campaign manager for George McGovern.

"I'm trying on my side. I know that much," Roberts said. "I think he's open to a lot of different options right now. I don't think anything is imminent at this point with anybody that I know of.

MacPhail never asked Roberts to talk to Holliday. Roberts was having a futile conversation as it was clear the Orioles weren't interested in Holliday.

Except of course that they offered him an 8 year contract. Must not have been interested at all.

    • That 2016 team wasn't the same for me as 2012 and 2014.  They basically played .500 ball over the second half, and in fact had losing months in July and August. Going 7-2 in the last 9 games gave them a winning September, but that year was kind of similar to this one in that it was a slog for a very long period of time and we never really had the magic of 2012 or 2014. And their offensive approach in the Toronto WC game was so horrible that I think they could have brought in Britton and every great reliever in the league and they still were never scoring again in that game.  After Stroman left, they went 5 innings with no hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
    • Fire Hyde.  Put all the guys on steroids.  Tell Holliday he is going to be our center fielder because he sucks so much at second.   Trade Mayo because he can not ever be allowed to field again.  Make Gunnar our firstbase because he cant throw to first to save his life and often makes horrible fielding errors.   Prepare the fans that the Orioles will be the Toronto Blue Jays next year.  A wonderful young team that couldn't do anything and ended up sucking.
    • 18 straight is crazy and I had no idea Minnesota had that streak going.  Baseball is a silly sport.  And cruel.
    • 1. TOR SP 2. SP depth 3. Add someone with high K% and low HR rate to the BP 4. Righty bat that destroys lefties 5. bring the damn left field wall back in a bit as part of offseason renovations
    • I think you are confusing 1969 and 1979.
    • Zero chance anything like that has anything to do with the product on the field IMO.  Especially in baseball, which is inherently more a collection of individual performances than a true team sport.  I don’t think clubhouse culture matters at all in baseball except insofar as if gone wrong it might lead to disregard for fundamentals or disruptive off field behavior like excessive drinking or drug use.
    • 2016 Toronto loss for me. I honestly think we had a real shot that year had we advanced. Maybe the Cubs would’ve been too much, but I felt we matched up well with Texas and Cleveland. The Jays were our rival all year. Plus, the feeling that the loss was the beginning of the end for that era.
