Rule 5 Draft Thread: O's select Adrian Rosario lose Pat Egan and Pedro Beato

People only thought that because BA inexplicably put him as our #5 prospect. Honestly, it's one of the most surprising things I've ever seen BA do and had to be on some scout who saw him when he was with the Padres because the guy we saw at Bowie was a C-level relief prospect at best.

Also, can't we pull someone back once someone is selected? If I'm remembering that correctly, it is likely that we lost someone in the first round and then pulled back Pelzer.

You can't pull anyone back. That is a rule in the expansion draft though.

We could have kept losing players. The draft only ends when all teams pass.

I don't understand this comment.

They picked this Rosario guy, and he has to stay on the 25 man roster.

They lost Beato and Egan, presumably because they don't want them taking spots on the 40 man roster. (And they think that they won't stick I'm sure - but still a risk.)

So they didn't have room for 2 middle relief prospects on the 40 man (or even one of them), but they have room on the *25 man* for a guy out of A ball with not much experience?

UNLESS he's sent somewhere in a trade, then I see the logic of course...

I will explain this again. If we had added Beato and Egan to the roster, they would automatically go to the "bottom," meaning they would be one of the firsts to be taken off the roster should be need 40 man roster spots. If they are removed from the roster, they can be claimed by someone and kept on their 40 man roster with three option years. If we can keep Rosario on the roster, then someone could/should be able to stash those two for a whole year, but we will see. If they are returned to us, then they by-pass the 40 man roster.

With an overall 11.5 K/9 ratio, he is a very high upside guy, more so than Beato or Egan.

Now, there are plenty of other options I would rather have had over Rosario, but so be it.

Curious why Rosario over Rodriguez now that we are keeping him... I guess someone, maybe Buck?, saw Rosario pitch and said he could be ready to pitch in the bigs.

That looks like crap. Sorry. Here is the link comparing Beato, Rodriguez, and Rosario: http://thebaseballcube.com/players/compare.asp

AM's quote was "Interestingly enough, Milwaukee took one of our guys and we took one of theirs. That's a dynamic frankly we didn't anticipate. Interesting to see how the spring plays out."

So, why don't they go through the procedures to trade them for each other - so they aren't forced to keep them on the 25 man rosters? It'd be a win/win situation for everyone.

If I'm Milwaukee, I would rather have Rosario.

But that doesn't matter if the O's like him enough; Milwaukee's not getting Rosario back.

How realistic is it that a guy who has limited time in A ball is going to stick on the Orioles' major league roster all year? Chances are good we'll be required to offer him back to the Brewers.

    • With just over a week until Opening Day, who makes the final MLB roster?  Safe = 18: SP: Gibson, Ivin, Bradish, Kremer RP: Bautista, Baker, Perez, Akin IF: Mateo, Mountcastle, Urias, Henderson, Frazier, Rutschmann, McCann OF: Santander, Mullins, Hays Prediction: SP: Rodriguez RP: Wells, Voth (especially with Givens injured, I think these two are definitely on the roster), Bauman, Politi IF: Vavra OF: McKenna, Stowers
    • Unfortunately have not really been able to watch I wish they showed more ST games on MASN.

    • I have no doubt that the WBC games are 100 times more electric than a spring training game.  ST games are very relaxing and fun, but they are the opposite of intense.  I’m still surprised at the viewing disparity, though I’ll wait until tomorrow night before considering the poll results comparable since I started the WBC poll a day earlier.
    • Fangraphs credits him with 2.1 fWAR at 3B and 1.7 at SS, so that’s 3.8 so far (it’s possible they might have him dabbling at DH once in a while, we’ll see).  At SS, the O’s ranked 18th at 3.4 fWAR, with Mateo and Henderson splitting time roughly 60/40.  Fangraphs comments: “This playing time projection is the numerical equivalent of throwing your hands up in the air. Henderson looks bound for stardom, be it at third or shortstop, but Mateo is still holding on to the position for now after a solid defensive year established him as the everyday starter. His offensive numbers are downright ugly – that .284 projected wOBA is the second-lowest for anyone in this article with 100 or more PAs – but you can get away with that kind of bat at shortstop if your glove is transcendent. “In 2022, Mateo’s was, but he’d never flashed that level of defense before, so Orioles talent evaluators will have their work cut out for them early in the year. Henderson will likely start the season at third base, but if Mateo’s defense looks shaky, the team should make the switch sooner rather than later. Those offensive numbers next to Henderson’s name are no joke — think Corey Seager, if you’re looking for a parallel as an offense-first lefty shortstop. 2023 is just the start of Baltimore’s plan for contention, but what they do at shortstop will have ramifications for both this year and the future.” https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2023-positional-power-rankings-shortstop/
    • What I've been seeing overall is that a lot of fans were more engaged with the WBC than with their regular team this spring. Just yesterday I was talking to someone who had gone to the games in Miami and were raving about the experience.
    • I hadn’t really started the WBC poll with this in mind, but so far it appears that many more OH members tuned into the WBC than have tuned in to O’s spring training games.   Considering the composition of the audience, and the frequent complaints about the paucity of O’s spring training broadcasts, that’s not necessarily the outcome I would have expected.
