No, but raising it with addtions that make sense, and aren't always cheap don't hurt either. Why ravamp a bullpen 10 times in 10 years, when you could spend a little more, and have it set for 3-4? Why add a player like Atkins or Reynolds, that you'll be trading within 2 years, when you could have had Beltre for 5 years, and be enjoying the production through the life of the contract? Guess that doesn't make sense, that by the time you pay Atkin's flop season last year, and be stuck with paying Reynolds for a few also, that it wouldn't have all been worth adding Dunn or Beltre huh?

Most bullpens go through revamps with in two years. Show me a bullpen that is usually set for 3-4 years? Relievers are very volatile.

Atkins was a "stop-gap." Meant to only last a season. Not every position is going to have a long-term solution.

Any team that signs Beltre for 5 years will probably end up regretting it, just like Seattle did.

1. Beltre is far from a sure thing to produce.

2. Reynolds is nowhere near the same at Atkins.

Reynolds is clearly a better player than Atkins I agree.

Beltre with the exception of 2009 is certainly 3-5 war player. You can pretty much count on that for 3-4 years.

Reynolds is basically a .8-2 War player.... Beltre is clearly the better player.

Im not sure I agree with most of Maybe2050's points ... But at some point the Orioles need to try & get the best player available.

Why would they regret a contract that he lived up to?

Nice. I love FA relief pitchers. They are one of the most reliable cross-sections of players. The only downside is, unlike with Gonzalez last year, BAL is still stuck with their second round draft pick. Otherwise, this move, like Gonzalez, is awesome.

I don't recall you saying that back when Flanny did it

I guess if you exclude 2009...and 2005...and 2003, 2002, and 2001. Surprise surprise, his two top years came in contract years. He is probably more of a 2-4 WAR player, not 5.

And that is cool how you use Reynold's lowest level, but not Beltre's in your suggestions.

And it's my fault we waiting until Adrian Gonzalez and the other first tier players were gone? I'm viewing what they can add now that McPhail has decided to join the living in free agency.

That's fine. It's just funny that you have fixated on someone who is the definition of an average 1Bman.

There are plenty of alternatives. Scott at 1B and Jim Thome and Reimold platooning at DH would provide much more production.

I don't see how anyone can compare Reynolds to Atkins. Reynolds yes had a bad year last year. He was also one pace for a 800 OPS until he had a horrible September when he I believe broke his hand. He's one season removed from a 40-100 sesaon where he had a 860 OPS. Atkins was a guy who was on a downhill slide for the past few years with slipping power and everything. I agree it does remain to be seen who will be better offensively between Beltre and REynolds however I think we made the right move. This is going to be a heavy draft where the 2nd rounder we would have lost if we had signed Beltre is going to be equivalent to a mid 1st rounder in many others. Yeah Beltre's a good player but we got Reynolds on a bargain. Sucks to lose Hernandez but you make that trade any day of the week and then again if you ask me. I wouldn't be totally opposed to Gregg but I'd rather we go with cheaper options on the bullpen.
