Update on ACC basketball

Boston College loses to Harvard tonight. Losing to Harvard and Yale the same year. I wonder if any Ivy League has ever had two wins over one ACC team? Well good for the smart guys.

BC has lost to Harvard at least 2 times now in the last 4 years I believe.

BTW, more good news for the ACC...It looks like the chances of Kyrie Irving coming back are getting stronger. The hope is that surgery isn't needed. Still no time table set for his return. I am hoping to see him back in 4-6 weeks. That will give him enough time to get in shape and get back in the flow of the offense come tourney time.

So, maybe the ACC can at least win the title again.

Looking forward to Duke/MD on Sunday!

That is good news. Hopefully, it takes away any crazy ideas that Irving might have that he should come back next season to prove he's a top 3 pick. :) Actually, I think he'll be the 1st pick in the 2011 draft. There just isn't any other #1 pick type candidate - unless Perry Jones finally "gets it" - which doesn't seem to be likely anytime soon.

I am not sure he comes out early...the NBA is going to have a lockout it looks like.

If Irving comes back in time to be back in the flow by the ACC tournament, Duke will be a very, very dangerous team. Heck, they're dangerous without him, as Nolan Smith has really stepped up to the plate in Irving's absence.

I doubt Maryland gives Duke a real threat at Cameron Indoor this year. I like their chances in College Park much better.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yeah, Jordan is going to have to show he can at least hit 15 foot jumpers to play forward in the NBA, and if he can't even make foul shots... forget it. Otherwise, he's gotta be an undersized center in the NBA with a lack of verticality. He'd definitely make a roster, but he's not likely going to be a rotation player. If he stays in school another 2 years, maybe he can develop his game to be more like Love's style. Love managed to excell on the perimeter as well as in the paint in his 1 year at UCLA.

He will never be Kevin Love. He doesn't have the court vision, ball handling and I don't think he will ever knock down a 3. What Jordan Williams could be at the next level, after staying four years, is a poor mans Carlos Boozer. And by that I mean Popeye Jones. But he would have to continue to get more lean and work on his jumper. Who knows though the league isn't what it used to be.

Nobody's saying he will be Love. Love was a ridiculously good player - as a freshman. Guys like him don't come around every year. All I was trying to say is that Williams needs to expand his game - and he can do that and still be a force inside.

    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
