Nice job MattW, way to stay classy and not get into a back and forth with those who challenged your info. It could've gotten ugly, but it didn't.

This is the most excited I've been for the O's since the Raffy, Javy, Tejada offseason, really even moreso now. I love that we don't have to rely on Markakis batting 3rd or Jones and Wieters in the middle of the order. The new additions should help our younger players thrive under less pressure. Kudos to AM and Buck!

Thanks again MattW.

...so I have been out all day, hearing no Orioles news and I just got home to say that I felt 100% comfortable removing 'rumor' and calling this 'fact.'

Only to find out that the 'news breakers' (aka Jeff Z) beat me to it :D

If I can doubt you, I sure as hell can rep you, too! :clap3:

Nothing like getting right to get some good rep. Congrats on being first...

AM is going to spend all of next week focused on who in the hell knows MatthewW. Safe to say adding another bullpen arm or innings eater has been put on hold.

Good job, MatthewW and beware of the sweater vest in the shadows.

Isn't it obvious?

Welcome to the Hangout Matt Wieters!!!!!!!!!!!! :clap3:

Nice work Matt! The OH once again brings us the news before the news.

So... does this also mean that the insane Laroche demand for four years at $14 million per was accurate too? If so, wow. I am very, very glad we didn't do anything nuts to sign him. As in, anything beyond $7 million per, and 2-3 years.

Nice work AM. A good evening for the Orioles, and those of us who plan on paying money for tickets next season.

    • I’d say it worked out OK when the Red Sox started two rookie outfielders named Fred Lynn and Jim Rice.
    • They aren’t really a man short, due to the Lester call-up.
    • 1.31 ERA in his first 21 appearances this year, 24.30 over the last 6.   Ah, the life of a reliever!   Jorge is a class act and I hope he regains his footing.
    • Anybody could play 1B. Santander, Urias, Mountcastle. We should’ve been getting Westburg and Stowers reps at 1B too.    It depends on which metric you look at as to whether Mateo is on pace for a 3 win season. According to fWAR, he’s on pace for less than 2. He’s been less impressive defensively this year. I’m not saying bench him, but he shouldn’t be an every day player. Any decent manager should be able to find 4-5 games per week for Henderson, Westburg, Urias, Mateo, and Frazier, especially if 1B is an option for one or more.    Now is the time we should be experimenting with lineups and see which IF combo is the best. Instead Hyder/Elias seem determined to force Frazier at 2B and Mateo at SS. It’s not like any of them are doing anything to justify being everyday players.
    • I see the manager’s job differently than the color analyst.  For the latter, there’s good reason to have someone with strong past ties to the team.   For the former, past ties to the team are unnecessary and can even be a hindrance in some cases.  Now, Mazzili may have been a bad choice for other reasons, but I have no problem with the O’s choosing someone with no prior Orioles’ connection, just like with Showalter and Hyde.  But I much prefer my color guy to be very familiar with past Orioles tesms and players.   Martinez wasn’t, and he wasn’t particularly good at the job otherwise, either.
    • Everyone keeps missing that Akin is not being used as a bulk guy this year. They are trying to capitalize on his career splits and match him up. I do not think Hyde panicked, he planned to have Akin get through a certain spot in the order and then hand it to Baker. You can disagree with that usage of Akin but to attribute it to panic removing a bulk guy is unfair IMO. I agree with you that Zimmermann could have come in earlier and maybe gone longer. That could perhaps have saved Baker or Perez. However, after an off day followed by "A Team" game, I dont really see an issue with getting those guys some low leverage work. IMO Hyde has a plan for his relievers to come in and face 3-5 batters and then it's on to the next guy. The idea is that when an inning ends is arbitrary, so what matters is trying to maximize the favorable matchups and minimize the unfavorable ones. You may disagree but this year they are trying to use Akin in that framework.
