My overall take is that the Red Sox should easily surpass the Yankees as the top scoring team in the AL this year. Baltimore should narrow the gap with the other AL east teams considerably, but whether it will pass any remains to be seen.

On the pitching side, the Orioles' bullpen should be much better if the injuries are reduced. They figure to have their starters miss more games due to injury than in 2010, so improvement will have to come from experience, not better health.

As we prepare for the 2011 season, we need to remember that injuries happen. Here's a litany of Oriole injuries over the last 5 years. I probably forgot a couple, but if so, they should be minor players.

This is why it is important to keep aquiring depth.

Adding a DH like Guerrero, allows OF Depth by moving Scott to LF. Remember Reimold and Pie had injuries last year.

Adding a SP like Francis allows more pitching depth in case of injuries, or setbacks.It also makes it easier to prevent injuries by having more options and being able to control innings picthed.

Finally, our infield is much improved, but adding someone like Cantu allows more depth in the IF. He can play 1st 2nd or 3rd.

Just a reminder that injuries are a normal part of baseball. So far this year, in 45 games, the Orioles have had players on the DL a cumulative 101 games:

That projects to 364 games missed on the DL over a 162 game season. Go back through this thread and you'll see that that's not bad at all. The O's missed 658 games last year, and they have exceeded 364 in each of the last 4 years. 4 of the 5 AL East teams exceeded 364 games lost to injury last year. Granted, Matusz and Hardy are important players for us, but losing some important players is normal.

Red Sox -- Albers, Jencks, Wheeler, Scutaro, Lackey and Matsusaka have all been on the DL.

Yankees -- Ayala, Hughes, Cervelli, and Soriano have all been on the DL.

Rays -- Longoria, Niemann, and Howell have all been on the DL.

Blue Jays -- Nix, Davis, Hill, Lind and Litsch have all been on the DL.

I wonder if there is anywhere to see projected WAR lost due to injury time each year. While Hardy and Matusz have been very big losses, Jaku and Izzy are minimal at worst. We might have actually slightly benefited by having the players who replaced them.

When I compiled the lists that appeared earlier in the thread, I decided I couldn't judge how many of the DL stints were, perhaps, strategic rather than substantive. So, for this list, if you went on the DL, you went on the DL.

One rule I did follow before was I only counted players who actually played sometime during the season. So, I haven't included Duchscherer, though if he played on the team later this summer, I would add in all the games he missed before he was recalled.

That's the most games our offense has lost to injuries in the six years I've tracked, though the 123 games Izturis was on the DL were no great loss.

This is why adding depth to the roster is so important. Buck has said the O's need 10 starters. Depth at 3B and catcher are also needs for the off season.

All teams have injuries, as you've pointed out. Good teams overcome them. Teams with little talent and no depth do not.
