Well, this is the ball you will get in the majors, so he better get over it.

I may have misheard him, but I thought he was complaining about the inconsistencies of the AAA balls between different AAA affiliates as much as the difference between the AA and AAA balls.

What happened to Luke Leto, a high school SS out of Michigan?  His name was mentioned as a top of the first round pick in 2021 mocks last year but he appears to have fallen out of top prospect lists.

He's yet to be drafted and is an LSU commit.  I'll be curious to see if anyone takes him today.

Luke Leto – Leto was one of the top players in the country a few years ago, but he seems to have lost some athleticism with age, and now figures to be a corner infielder or outfielder. He has plus power potential in his left-handed bat, and a strong arm. He could be taken in the first five rounds, but he may be better off heading to LSU now.

  4. Kjerstad told the MLB Network in an interview this week that he improved as a hitter this season.

"That was my main thing going into the junior year ... I wanted to have a little bit better plate discipline, be more selective, get more walks and cut down on the strikeouts," Kjerstad told the network. "I knew that would help me reach a new level in my game, and I'll be honest, my freshman and sophomore years in college, I was a young 18- and 19-year-old, and I was trying to swing it and hit long balls just because.

"You dream about that as a kid, but I slowly started to realize, I don't have to swing too hard, I've just got to be on time and to the right pitch and it'll go. Me being more selective for this spring really helped me get off to the start I did, and I noticed a huge uptick in all parts of my game."

Maybe his improvement is real and sustainable.  He was good before, but if his changes were about to reveal a monster season in line with his early 2020 stats, then hopefully we'll forget about Martin soon enough.  Elias bet on it.  Getting in before industry opinion caught up and while he was potentially undervalued allowed the parlay in the later rounds.  Given the crap shoot that drafts always are, it seems a wise maneuver to hedge your bets like this when the stars align.

  5. In a vacuum, I preferred Martin with the top pick.  But, I'm drinking the coolaid for now and trust that Elias knows what he's doing.  I like he had a plan, trusted his own people, and executed the plan.  For that, his draft gets an A from me.  Nobody will know for years if he was right.  Time will judge this and all drafts.  And while we must view the draft as a whole, I'm probably not alone when I will be watching Martin's progress as against Heston's.

  6. I was hoping for Martin's name to be announced.  Was shocked and dismayed when it was not.  I hadn't read anything on Heston as even a possibility and was not familiar with him at all.

Trying to make sense and be positive about the selection, I started reading about him like everyone else.  His selection is warming on me and I can see how his power would be a welcome addition to the lineup.

Also, in evaluating Martin, he has a great stick but nobody knows where he will play on the field.  What we do know is that before the season there was talk of him trying SS.  That did not happen.  He started at 3rd but had arm issues that put in Center.  I gather that the arm issues are lingering and he's had some problem before.  But the arm issues do not affect his hitting.  He doesn't currently hit for a lot of power, and projects to only 15 to 20 maybe in the bigs at present.  Many were questioning if he could stick at Center.  I did not hear many who thought he could play SS in the majors, not even his coach when interviewed if I recall correctly.  Most things I read seemed to point to 2nd as possibly his best position in the majors.

So, what kind of problems could affect his arm and throwing that wouldn't affect his hitting.  Maybe Elias knows something or is worried about his arm enough not to risk it.

Maybe, he believes Heston's hitting changes and approach are real and sustainable.  Maybe the scouts and the analytics aligned just right and the value was such he calculated the move to be best (or so close it didn't matter) regardless of the money saving we expect.  Maybe he did have him rated nearly equal or above Martin given the arm and position uncertainties as compared to a healthy right fielder who mashes and was apparently moving up draft boards anyway.

I want to believe in Elias.  So, I guess I will choose to go with our expert and hope for the best.  After all, I don't know any of these kids.  I just read what others have written who probably don't know as much as we give them credit for.  It is a crap shoot no matter how smart you are anyway.  Consensus picks in baseball fail all the time.

  7. I like Tork and Martin above anyone else. I want a bat in large part because I think it's safer than pitching.  I feel both of these guys are going to be good.

I am not sure that Tork is limited athletically or limited to first base either.  His coach and an anonymous scout think he's playing first in large part because of outstanding athletes playing elsewhere on his college team.

    https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2020/05/21/potential-detroit-tigers-pick-spencer-torkelson-packs-more-than-just-powerful-punch/5236418002/?utm_source=oembed&utm_medium=onsite&utm_campaign=storylines&utm_content=news&utm_term=5263698002

His batting eye and in game power are rare.  His defensive ability is possibly better than a right handed first baseman.

Martin is a close second for me.  I want one of these two guys.

the owners made an agreement to cut pay to prorating salaries and a $170 million advance on salary that the players could keep if no season was played in exchange for cutting the draft to 5 rounds and having it be up to the owners when to start the season.

I have not read the agreement and was relying on what you wrote.

If the owners have bargained for and gotten the right to decide when the season starts, that is a huge chip.  Nothing in your post that I relied upon said anything about opening up books or proving losses.  You also said that the players agreed to negotiate in good faith if the games had to be played without fans.

All of this means to me that the players are losers if they do not reconsider their position such that the owners limit the season in a way that renders finances moot.

Again, if there is a written agreement I have not seen it but I have seen the AP report of it which is pretty detailed.  https://foxbaltimore.com/sports/sports-unlimited/details-of-mlb-players-union-agreement-on-2020-21-seasons

The excerpt below seems to support that it is likely that the owners could cancel the season justifiably with good cause unless they decide to bend over backwards to make some truncated season happen.

I still think the owners have almost all the leverage.  And I see nothing that makes me think they'd have to open up the books to justify cancelling the season for health concerns.  There also seems to be plenty to suggest that financial concerns over possibly playing without fans was contemplated.  But deciding to limit or cancel the season for health and logistical reasons seem easy to meet in my opinion.

    "STARTING SEASON

There must be no government restrictions on mass gatherings or travel restrictions throughout the U.S. and Canada, provided the commissioner will consider "appropriate substitute neutral sites where economically feasible." The commissioner must determine, after consulting with the union and medical experts, "that it does not pose an unreasonable health and safety risk to players, staff or spectators to stage games in front of fans in each of the 30 clubs' home ballparks." MLB and the union will discuss the economic feasibility of playing games at neutral sites or without fans. The commissioner has the right to suspend or cancel games after the start of the season if government restrictions or travel conditions change."

    Good.

The issue of pay is closed, the owners made an agreement to cut pay to prorating salaries and a $170 million advance on salary that the players could keep if no season was played in exchange for cutting the draft to 5 rounds and having it be up to the owners when to start the season.

If the owners don't want to have a season, then they can cancel the season. The players are willing to have a 100 game season, hopefully ownership greed won't get in the way.

Interest rates are at an all time low and it is in the interest of the federal government for sports to return, perhaps the owners can take out loans and/or negotiate a bailout from the government if they want to protect their long term asset of team ownership.

It is also in the interest of MLB's media partners, maybe they can reach out to them for financial assistance.

It would be silly to throw away the goose that lays the golden eggs just because he laid a few regular eggs.

Well, I would say that the issue is not closed assuming everything you say is absolutely true.

Based upon what you wrote, $170 mil the players get no matter what.  That's roughly $5.7 mil per team.  If there is no season, that money gets divided up, I guess between the players and that's it.  That's not really much per player considering what they make.

The players lose huge money in that scenario.  They lose big the fewer games that get played from their prorating agreement.  And the owners get to decide when to start play and how many games get played.

So, if the owners decide that it is cheaper to not play than play the games, the players lose big time.

Every game the owners shorten the season the players lose big time.

It seems clear that the possibility of playing the season without fans could be cost prohibitive and that was contemplated.

So, based upon your facts, the players could stick it to the owners and cut their own noses off in the process.  Or, negotiate something better for both sides.

I am sorry but the players are being stupid so far.  Of course, this is the game within the game, but the owners still hold all the cards in my opinion.

Heaven help us if this entire season is cancelled. But if it is, I wonder how they'll determine the draft order for 2021? Anyone care to guess? Go by the same draft order for 2020? In that case I guess the Tigers take Kumar Rocker and the Orioles take Nander De Sedas. Of course a lot could change by then.

According to BA, Nander De Sedas is a draft eligible sophomore for the 2020 draft.

  11. If they are so bothered by stealing signs...  Why don't they just make it impossible to steal signs.  Not like we don't have the tech.  Just put a gadget on the catchers wrist with a flap that has buttons on it, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, whatever.  Let him call pitches by lifting the flap and pushing a button.  Button sends a signal to pitcher with an ear piece with the designated pitch.  Pitcher shakes off, catcher pushes another button.  Rinse repeat.  Or an apple watch on catcher to send signal to pitcher's watch... whatever...  The players know how apple watches work so maybe that's good enough...

    Here’s a guy, Ljay Newsome.

He’s kind of like a RH version of Lowther. Whippy arm action, 89-93, solid command, none of the secondaries are as good as Lowther’s curveball but there is a workable 4 pitch mix.

I would love to see Ljay come home!  My son played with and against him growing up.  High quality kid who throws strikes.  Very coachable and will out perform expectations in my less than knowledgeable opinion.

Bobby who?  I know some would naturally compare Bobby with Adley based upon their draft position, but to me this is the real comparison.  So far so good!
