  1. I just started Pale Fire by Nabokov. I'm only 30 pages in but so far I'm blown away.

I'm a huge fan of Lolita so I'm not exactly sure why I've waited so long to read other works by this amazing writer, and I think somebody here (Lucky Jim?) posted a while ago that Pale Fire was perhaps Nabkov's finest work.

My experience with Lolita was that I enjoyed the book much more after I stumbled across an annotated version that exposed all the puns, anagrams, and hidden or obscure references peppered throughout; I'm wondering if I should find a reader's guide or good critique of this as well.

Once I'm a bit further along, I'll post additional thoughts, but in the meantime, if you've read it, I'd love to hear your impression.

  2. I was just turned down for another job this morning.

A friend of mine works for the company so I asked him if he could ask the manager why I wasn't considered. Turns out there were over 1800 applicants for 12 positions. And without being specific, let me say that this is not a particularly attractive or well-paying job...but it is a job.

    *sigh* :angryfire:

  3. The roofers put a new roof on my Mom's house.

At least it's better than Nickelback.

    :laughlol:

    Here, crank this up....

  5. How many times do things work as well as or better than advertised? Not often in my experience -- maybe not ever is more like it.

But I just bought a Discwasher Record Care System for cleaning vinyl albums, and I'm astounded at how well it works and how much better my records sound. I thought some of them were scratched or permanently damaged but it turn out they just had 30+ years of accumulated filth in the grooves.

  6. I finished A Moveable Feast a few weeks ago, and while I thought it was very good, I'd never consider it his best. It's a wonderful collection of sketches of an amazingly interesting time and place, but I don't think it can stand up to his other works, especially not The Sun Also Rises or The Old Man and The Sea.

How about Edgar Allan Poe since we're a few days from Halloween? I love re-reading poems like The Raven, Annabell Lee and The Bells, and of course stories like The Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado.

  7. This is what I'm listening to right now. Over and over and over -- can't get it out of my mind.

Got it from the September issue of MOJO magazine; the "Africa Rising" cd has this and a bunch of other great tracks from African musicians.

This track -- "Tenhert (The Doe)" by Tinariwen -- is by a band of Taureg musicians from the Sahara, several of whom were conscripted into Moammar Qadaafi's army. Seriously.

    Groovy groovy groovy.

  8. You drunk like me?

All righty then...put on "Street Fighting Man" by the Rolling Stones.

I defy you not to get all riled up and ready to go.

Booze + Street Fighting Man = Ready to Go.

What a great song. Even better after 3 bottles of wine and two bottles of beer.

    Sláinte!

EDIT: Maybe 'Stray Cat Blues' is even better. Updates as I listen to the rest of Beggars Banquet and drink more Dos Equis...

DOUBLE EDIT: Just watch this and pour yourself a stiff one and now I'll shut up...Salt of The Earth

(i'm going to keep updating this just because I want to see where my tastes lead)

...and today we're going with Bach's Lute Music -- Prelude in C Minor, BWV 999, Fugue in G Minor, BWV 1000, that sort of thing. Performed by Walter Gerwig, of course.
