It's pretty clear that the name is offensive to some Native Americans, and not to others. I guess the thing that I feel comfortable debating is whether or not a majority of Native Americans would have to be offended before the name would have to be changed. I mean, say 30% of Native Americans are offended... what would that mean for the name? It's not a majority, but 30% is still a significant part of the population.

And good luck ever getting a poll of a group of people as large and geographically diverse as Native Americans that could be considered definitive and comprehensive.

Part of the problem the Redskins have right now is that the people in question aren't a single tribe or nation, like with FSU and the Seminoles. It's anyone who considers themselves a 'Native American.' So there is no single group with a central leadership that the team could talk to about the issue (assuming they were so inclined in the first place).

While I agree with the premise, I am confused by the closure of the Ray Rice thread. Whatever, it is not worth it.....

As Tony said, if there's nothing to discuss, it will die on its own.

(Personally, I think the Ray Rice thread got closed solely due to the antics of one particular poster who just couldn't leave it alone, not due to the topic itself. But obviously, that's not for me to say.)
