  1. I am trying not to judge Hyde on wins and losses this season, but that was pathetic on his part.  Why on earth would you load the bases with 1 out only to go to a pitcher in your BP who has had 5 ml appearances?  Not that it matters, but slap in the face to your players who fought their way back in this game.

  2. I’m getting so lost in this thread.  Can someone clarify once and for all?  I thought the MASN arbitration ruling and court decision affirming it merely affirmed that the formula used to determine revenue payments was proper.  It was a formula the Os probably favored, but was still more money than they wanted to pay out annually.  However, the MASN agreement dictates that both teams shall receive equal amounts of annual revenue, and the Orioles are majority owners of MASN which is a percentage that decreases annually until the split reaches 67% for the Os, and 34% for the Nats.  Neither of those provisions were  changed with this decision either.  So the issue is MASN (whose majority owner is the Os) has to pay withheld revenues since 2012.  Correct?

Also did Gary Thorne say something crazy earlier? I see some stuff on twitter. No details.

He certainly basically just called out Stewart as not a major league outfielder, or at least not playing like one.

  4. Much better on television than on radio.  On radio he does what seemingly every single color guy for the Orioles is doing, talking over the action.  Dave Johnson might be the biggest offender.  I can’t believe no one tells them you have to keep your points short and give breaks to the play by play personnel so he can update the action.  It makes listening to games now very frustrating.  But Ben on television is a natural.

Buck was very old school robotic where Hyde is the complete opposite.  Buck would go with his guys one inning each 7th, 8th, 9th.  Brach, O'day Britton they each got one inning and he rarely would pitch them more then an inning.  Givens who was the closer has come into the 8th innings multiple times and then go the 9th already this season.  He has came in the 9th in regular save situation as well.  Hyde has changed guys up 7th 8th and 9th and most times they were going 1 inning plus when we had a lead.  Buck had good guys in the pen and trusted them and he just used it the way most feel it should be one inning pitchers he was rarely a feel guy it worked because he had you know good pitchers.

Buck also had good pitchers because he used them properly.  You cannot divorce having good pitchers with using them to their strengths and with the right rest.  Both aspects are necessary for an effective pen.  You need only remember the Lee Mazzilli and Mike Hargrove tenures to see a manager who misused bullpen pitchers, getting them up without using them, and bringing guys in without warming enough, let alone overusing one pitcher.  Also, I don't think I would describe Buck as robotic in any capacity except in that he was not a shake up the lineup kind of manager.  That doesn't mean robotic to me.  Robotic to me is making automatic moves because the book says so.

  6. I mean at the end of the day, we are essentially in a season of extended spring training,  Results don’t matter, but the game to game decision of the manager have to be measured and judged.  So far, as I said, at best Hyde’s grade is incomplete.  Hope he improves, because if he doesn’t he will be a liability for this team when they get above replacement level major league talent.

  7. The tough thing is we are all used to Buck for the last 8 plus seasons.  Save for one notable post season exception, Buck was a master at handling the bullpen.  Hyde seems far more robotic and predictable, and less willing to make decisions on feel, and protect his pitchers from facing one too many batters.  So far, it’s tough to defend his decisions with the results.

Overall, I'm not all that impressed with Hyde so far.

It’s tough to judge any manager on 1/3 of a season.  But so far, I find him to be far to prone to over managing and forcing the issue.  The best grade I can give him so far is incomplete.  While he has little to work with, you cannot have the worst record in baseball and blame it all on the players you have.  Especially when not every player you have is replacement level player or below.

The loss tonight is on Davis.  That extra out cost us.

Davis almost single handedly cost them 2 out of 3 games in this series.  Monday, he hit a fly ball to left that landed for a hit.  Not only did he not run hard out of the box thinking it would be caught, he turned the corner at first and got thrown out because he did not stop.  In a 2 run game that was a huge play.  Then tonight he doesn’t take the out at first on a bunt with a fast runner.  If you aren’t going to earn the 23 mil a year with production at the plate, you should at least be a leader on the filed with smart baseball and hustle.  IMO, he owes an apology to his team mates after this series.

  10. It's too bad we won't see it this year. I'd love to see Ortiz turn around to argue a third strike call and, when he realized what had happened, use his bat to smash to pieces the nearest piece of electronic equipment. They might even fine him, but probably not since he's such a class guy.

    Bump....

My God that third strike on Davis was one of the worst calls I have ever seen. You never know but thankfully it was in a 7-0 game. Nevertheless, MLB right now is like the NFL in 1980 refusing to use instant replay. Everyone can see what the call should have been, but "human error is a part of the game." A phrase I never understood. "Hey you know what should be an "unwritten" rule, once or twice a game the umps should get a call on a rule completely wrong. It makes things more intersitng..."

  11. Sad, but true. We got jobbed, and sadly, I felt like there was some bias. I'll take off my tin foil hat, lol. :laughlol

Haha. Tinfoil hat or no tinfoil hat, the result is the same. What sucks is, a player make a mistake, they get tossed. The ump makes a mistake, they move on to the next game. I always go back to what Jim Palmer once said when Cal was tossed in a game at his first at bat for looking back at an ump on a called strike. When it happened, you could see the fans getting up and leaving the stands. Palmer said to the Ump, like or it not, no one is here in this stadium to see you ump. Without the players, you don't get a paid.

  12. How practical/possible is an electric strike zone? Given the fact that every hitter has a different strike zone. I'm sure they could do it I just question how perfect it could be. You still have calls at the plate that need to be made as well.

I thought the strike zone was 17 inches across and letters to the knees. You honestly think that it's that much more difficult for an electronic eye to consistently keep track of that than a human eye?
