I have been annoyed with the company beats for years for exactly that reason. They can’t ask difficult questions and when it’s pointed out to them they get angry.  They aren’t serious journalists.

How hard is it for even one of the beat writers to do actual journalism?  More often they are just acting as stenographers for whatever the approved conventional wisdom happens to be at that moment, and then they sass fans on Twitter for daring to question any aspect of the team's direction.  It's bizarre almost.

  2. My favorite Oriole was Joe Angel.  He's been the only constant through the winning and losing.  Before that, it was Jon Miller.  I also don't mind Jim Hunter.  Sure, he's very positive no matter what.  But nothing says "Orioles baseball" like hearing Jim Hunter's voice and a terrible Schmidt Old Time commercial.

It's really not fair to compare Kevin Brown to anyone, as he's inheriting the position of someone who had a strong bond with his audience built over decades.  No way to have that when you first start out.

He does seem very personable, and I thought he had good rapport with Steve M.  I'm keeping an open mind.

  3. Having Hanley in left doesn't help either. He butchered another one yesterday that helped open the floodgates.

That was a really horrible play all around. Slow, stopped too soon, jumped about 2 inches off the ground. Really bad. Nelson-Cruz-in-game-6-of-the-World-Series bad.

  4. Yeah, and Arrieta has pitched well against AL clubs the last two years with Cubs since turning things around 8 games 52 IP, 4-1 record. ERA around 3.00.

Yeah, but for some reason he never did it with the Orioles. And we didn't trade him when he was at AA; he had had plenty of opportunities on the big stage and he just never did it. At least he is on the Cubs and not a division rival. If I had to pick one of Arrieta and ERod to really pan out after leaving us, I'd pick Jake all day long.

  5. I loved Andrew Miller and don't really question that trade. It was worth it to go for it last season. But that doesn't mean it won't be painful to watch EdRod in a Red Sox uniform for several years to come, if he's anything close to as good as he'd been the first few starts.

    (AUGUST 21st)

The Orioles are making a habit of this (making off-days easier to stomach for their fans by winning the previous days' games.)

They are 10-0 on games just preceding off days dating back to June 1st, and are 14-3 on such days for the entire season.

Great stat -- I was wondering that, because it seems like we haven't had too many tough-to-stomach off days. Thanks offny!

  7. Come on, no Breaking Bad thread?

Amazing episode last night. When Hank closed that garage door behind Walt, you knew some serious stuff was about to go down. It had to be those two going head to head at the end but I can't believe they brought it on so quickly like that.

And the scene where Walt lied his ass off to Jesse about Mike was crazy, too.

Have never watched Breaking Bad, but i've heard great things. My wife and I recently pounded out all three seasons of the walking dead -- GREAT show. We're considering giving BB a try.
