  1. I couldn't find the right page on the net, but I was trying to find a breakdown on what the Redskins actually took in, what their net was, similar to what got published for the baseball teams a few months ago.

You hear people claim Snyder just wants to make money from the team, and yes the team makes money, it always has, but they spend lots of money too.

What people have to remember, when NFL trademark sells anything with a NFL team logo on it, it goes into revenue sharing, a XX percent to the NFLPA, and a XX percent to the teams.

If you look on Forbes list of 52 most valuable sports franchises in the world, all 32 NFL teams are on there, yet only 7 MLB teams are there.

The Redskins are obviously in a multi-billion dollar enterprise. As such, their brand is sold and the profits are shared with these other entiies under the NFL umbrella.

I think that this presents another issue for the NFL and the Redskins. The league has been called to task regarding the Riley Cooper and Richie Incognito incidents. Both of these incidents involved white players using racial slurs. The league has responded by penalizing players during the game for using racial slurs if they are heard by the officials. Further, I read that Art Rooney asked the Steelers players to stop playing music in the locker room that has racial slurs in the lyrics. In the light of all of this, the league looks more and more hypocritical and insensitive by allowing one of their teams to use a name that is viewed as derogatory by many in a certain ethnic group.

FWIW, I am not a native American and I have no issue with your handle Rick.

  2. I'm not sure what's more disingenuous, Snyder's newfound charity or the people that have really amped up this fight since the Skins drafted a high profile rookie QB, sold a bunch of his jerseys, went 10-6, won the division and were scheduled for the most prime time games in the regular season out of any other team in the following year.

This debate has been going on forever and to some peoples credit there are those that have been rallying against the name for decades. But there's no denying that it's hit an all time high since drafting RG3. I have a hard time believing anyone is having this debate at this level if the Redskins don't draft RG3 and are sitting at 3-13 or 4-12. Furthermore, where's everyone's outrage against the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs and the Cleveland Indians?

There's no doubt that Snyder's motives are questionable at best. But at least some people are getting to benefit from it. It was a big mistake that it took him this long to do it.

I also agree that it's just a matter of time before he has to change the name.

There is no doubt that the presence of RG3 on the roster has put the team under the microscope in regard to the name, In addition, the fact that the team plays in the nations' capital also adds to the drama of the situation. It has in some ways made it a national debate.

You make a fair point about the other teams. I believe that there are some Native Ameirican groups like the one mentioned in the article that want to ban the use of all Native American nicknames. I don't see this happening, but I believe that the Cleveland Indians are no longer using their " Chief Wahoo" logo.

As you state, people are going to benefit from Snyder's charitable work, and that in itself is a good thing.

  3. I have to disagree with you. I believe Danny is dead set against the name change, because he grew up a fan of the team, since he was a little boy.

He doesn't see the name as racial, and its been used for decades.

Did the Browns change their name, when the NCAAP asked them to, years ago?

Danny bleeds Redskins red blood, as much as Brooks and Cal bleed Oriole Orange blood.

I never heard of the bolded. But if the Browns organization were actually asked, they probably would have laughed at the idea. The Browns were named after their founder Paul Brown. In their formative years, they were as lilly white as the rest of the NFL ( including the Redskins) and the AAFC. ( Where the franchise started.)

Of course Snyder doesn't see the name as racially offensive. He does not care because he has a trademark name that is a cash cow. Further, because the name has been used for decades, it does not mean that it is not racially offensive. ( particulary to Native Americans.)

Danny can bleed red all he wants. I agree with Frobby, he'll eventually change it and make a boatload of cash off of the Redskin fans whowill have to buy all the new gear.

  4. In an attempt to defuse the Redskins name controvery, Snyder is starting a foundation to benefit Native American causes. So far it seems that the tribes (or, at least those that have been vocal about the name issue) aren't buying it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/latest-redskins-nickname-outreach-is-a-step-but-without-a-direction/2014/03/25/3df18260-b46d-11e3-8020-b2d790b3c9e1_story.html

Frankly, I think it is just a matter of when the team changes its name, not if. No way Snyder can turn the tide on this.

    Spot on as usual.

I'd hate to say anyone charitable work is disingenuous, but there is little doubt that Snyder is looking for some positive PR from Native American groups.

IMO, the only reason that there has not been a name change is the lack of outcry among groups other than Native Americans.

I predict that within three years there is a name change. This will give Snyder enough time to do market research to come up with the popular name and colors

that will make him the most profit.

  5. I don't live in areas where either mudslides or wildfires happen. And the last big earthquake was in 1994 in my neck of the woods. But if you want to look for things wrong with the state there are plenty of other reasons not to live here.

Yeah. However, 75 degeree weather in January does not appear to be one of them.
