MLB can't dilute the player pool any more.  It would be too detrimental on the product.

    Just balance the schedule.

The quality and size of the player pool has been increasing since the last expansion due to the overseas expansion of the game so two more teams wouldn't really be much of a hit to the product quality when compared to a decade or two ago.

    No. Steve Johnson was though.

Was he? Career Fip above his ERA. Looking at his numbers I don't see why any stat people would be excited. 2012 was promising I suppose, but even then the walks were too high to expect any sustained success as a starter.

  3. I got into an argument with some guy on IG the other day. MLB posted this and this guy claimed that donaldson>machado. I still struggle with this notion and that there are people in this world who deny manny that honor of being the best at his position in the bigs.

You struggle to see how a guy who might win back to back MVPs would be considered the best at his position?

  4. I judge process over results, so I was against the Davies trade, but fine with not signing an aging, PED marred DH sign a large 4 year contract.

Trading starting pitching prospect for low impact rentals will be the biggest black mark on this amazing O's run.

  5. "Scott is a lefty that touches 100 with some deception. He also throws a slider and changeup, both of which are below-average pitches at present. He has some sequencing issues that force him to rely on his arm more than most, giving him some command issues. Still, a small improvement in either his command or his slider vaults him into closer territory at the big league level. It’s a little tough to envision that based on his current feel and delivery, but the fastball should be enough for him to pitch in a major league bullpen."

  6. It's strikes me as funny how we hear all this whining about how we never go for it, we don't want to win blah, blah, and then when they take a shot, and go for it, we hear all this whining about how we have mortgaged the future, blah, blah.

What if I were to tell you, it's possible to "go for it" without mortgaging the future?

  7. Sorry, I disagree, been more than one pitcher that pitched well everywhere except while on a AL East roster.

There has been more than one pitcher that has displayed that characteristic for every division in baseball. If we're counting shaky, anecdotal and SSS evidence, take a look at how much Jake struggled last year against the mighty AL East.

  8. I'm bumping this thread from the day of the Miller trade so we can revisit how people felt at the time. More than 79% were in favor. I voted against it, because I liked EdRod.

We'll see how it plays out from here.

P.S. -- Mods, please lock the poll. No new Monday morning quarterbacking votes!

Good idea. Yeah, I voted "Too much", but it appears we were no where near the majority. I am never a fan of giving up on young starters. It already bit us with Arrieta.

  9. I'm not a fan of trading a potential starter for a decent reliever (and a rental at that). For those unaware, here is what Fangraphs said in January:

The Year in Review: The Venezuelan southpaw split the 2013 between High-A and Double-A. He showed above-average control for his age while walking 49 batters with 125 strikeouts in 145.0 combined innings. After he made 25 minor league starts during the regular season, Rodriguez compiled another five starts in the Arizona Fall League but was hit around a bit and posted a 5.52 ERA with 16 hits allowed in 14.2 innings of work.

The Scouting Report: Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman are names that are fairly well known among well educated fans around baseball but Rodriguez has yet to gain similar notoriety despite having the talent to challenge them in the rankings. He has an above-average fastball for a southpaw and it can hit the mid-90s with excellent movement. Both his slider and changeup should be above-average — if not plus — offerings for him when he reaches his full potential.

The Year Ahead: The experience in the AFL could convince the Orioles to push the lefty to Triple-A if he has a strong spring. Both Gausman and Rodriguez could be in Baltimore’s starting rotation in the second half of 2014. A healthy Bundy will likely join them in 2015, and them will potentially give them a stellar 1-2-3 pitching punch.

The Career Outlook: Rodriguez has the ceiling of a No. 2 or 3 starter but he’ll likely slot into the Orioles’ No. 3 slot in the future with the other young, talented arms also reaching the Majors around the same time as him. It could soon be a very good time to be an O’s fan.
