Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?

I just used the stop watch on my phone. Not the most accurate way to do it but the only way I know how.

  2. I just watched a YouTube video where this one guy proposed the Orioles send Mullins, Hall, and McDermott for Luzardo. I'd do that deal in a heartbeat! But I suspect the Marlins would laugh Elias out of the room if he proposed that.

  3. The Orioles are now 0-6 in playoff games since winning the Detroit series in 2014. The scores have been 8-6 in 10 innings, 6-4, 2-1, 2-1 , 5-2 in 11 innings, and 3-2. We were competitive in all six games and had either the tying or winning run at the plate in all six games. It's time to end this jinx today. I vote for an 8-0 thrashing behind Grayson's shutout!

Are we going to start one at 162 next year?

Actually I believe it would start at 156. Because if we win 156 that assures us that we defeat each A.L. East foe a minimum of seven times each since we play them all 13 times each and we would only have six losses.

  5. I guess I prefer Texas although I do have some reservations about playing them because the only series I was able to see live this year is when Texas came to Baltimore in late May. And they dominated us that series outscoring us 19-8. They came close to sweeping us until we sqeezed across the tie breaking run in the 8th inning of the final game.

So I'm trying to understand the playoff format and seeding. If I have it correct this is what the AL playoffs would look like if the season ended today:

    Seed #

    1) Baltimore Orioles

    2) Texas Rangers

    3) Minnesota Twins

    4) Tampa Bay Rays

    5) Toronto Blue Jays

    6) Houston Astros

The Orioles and Rangers would have first round byes.

The Twins would host the Astros in a Wild Card three game series, all of the games in Minnesota. The winner goes on to the Division Series.

The Rays would host the Blue Jays in a Wild Card three game series, all of the games in Tampa. The winner goes on to the Division Series.  This would be kind of strange as it would mean Tampa and Toronto would potentially be facing each other six games in a row, and nine times in fourteen days.

The Orioles would face the winner of the Tampa / Toronto series. The Rangers would face the winner of the Twins / Astros series. Both of these would be best of five in a 2-2-1 format with the Orioles and Rangers having home field advantage.

IMO this part of the playoff scheduling is nonsensical. It is almost certain that in the Division Series the #1 seed (the Orioles) would have to play a team with a better record than whichever team plays the #2 seed (the Rangers). It shouldn't be that difficult for MLB to reseed the last four AL teams so as to reward (rather than punish) the team with the best record in the league.

I would also like to see a reseed but it is what it is. Also, Seattle will have a lot to say about the playoff teams as they only trail Houston by a 1/2 game and they host both Houston and Texas this week. They have owned Houston this year winning eight of ten so they have the tiebreaker over them as well.

  7. Dodgers pull off the win in extra innings to pull within 1/2 game of the O's. We're even in the loss column and they have the tie breaker. This might not mean much but it could mean home field advantage if the O's and Dodgers meet in the World Series.

  8. My most vivid memory of the Orioles during that time was listening to the games on A.M. radio at night since there was no way to watch them where I live in southern Virginia. The broadcast would go in and out and it never failed when Chuck Thompson would say, "It's a long fly ball, deep to centerfield, it's at the warning track, it's at the wall..."and his voice would tail off before I could tell what happened.

I can't click through. Can anyone share some quotes? The headline is not a good look.

Anyone with a PC can read the article. Just right click in the body of the article, choose "inspect", click on settings (may have to click on three horizontal dots in order to get menu that includes "settings"), then disable javascript. May need to refresh page.

Nice to see Kjerstad collect a couple of hits today.  I’m still not sure I understand the reason why he was replaced by O’Hearn in LF with two outs in the 9th, but I understood Hyde to say it had to do with where Cano would be inserted into the lineup when he came into the game, but rather than a moved based on an idea that O’Hearn is a defensive upgrade over Kjerstad in the OF.

This was simply a double switch due to the fact that we had lost the DH and the pitcher's spot was now in the lineup. Kjerstad had made the last out in the top of the ninth so the double switch allowed Hyde to put Cano in Kjerstad's spot in the lineup to keep the pitcher's spot from coming up as late as possible. This allowed McCann to move into the number 6 spot in the order replacing Perez who officially had taken Hick's spot in the order. I'm not sure what the confusion was during the game unless the umpire was having a hard time understanding what Hyde wanted to do.

If Toronto won out, they'd be at 95 wins.  The Orioles hold the tie breaker, so with the O's at 92 wins, wouldn't the magic number be 3, not 1?

I think our situation has more to do with the Rangers and Mariners having seven games left with each other than Toronto's record. We would only have to beat out one of these three teams to clinch a wild card.

Funny how the math works out  when you are the Chasee rather than the  Chaser.   Assuming they win tonight, if they lose 3 of 4 to Tampa  they will  still be 2 games ahead  on the lost side.   A good position to be in and shows just how hard it is to  catch a good team  or any team for that matter  when it looks like a small lead.

    And own the tie breaker!

The 3 longer streaks in NL history:

    1942-44 Cardinals: 124

    1905-09 Cubs: 115

    1903-05 Giants: 105

Where are you seeing the 1905-09 Cubs with a streak of 115? I've seen four different articles naming the top four streaks and they aren't on any of those lists.

I think they changed that rule a few years ago and now the waiver order is just based on record and it doesn't matter what league a team is in.

When a player is on waivers, other teams can submit a claim. If more than one team does, those in the same league as that player's team get first priority, starting with the club with the worst record on the day of the claim. Then, the priority moves to the other league, starting with the worst record. For example, if a National League team puts a player on waivers, the NL team with the worst record gets the first shot at him, and the last-place American League club would be right behind the top NL club.

This is the article I saw when I made my post. I did just notice it was from 2017 however, so does anyone know for sure if it's been changed since then?

I bet we try to put him back through waivers and see if we can pass him through to get him in Norfolk first.  No one claimed him first time so good chance we can pass him through as only Braves didn’t get a chance to claim him.

The Braves did get a chance to claim him but turned it down. Every NL team gets a chance before any AL team since he was on a NL team. So the Orioles were the last club to get a shot at him.

The 42-44’ Cards dominated a watered down league because of WWII. Completely changes my opinion on Musial. I had always thought he was underrated. Now it’s the opposite.

We’re in good company with a few of the most dominant teams of all time.

Another huge advantage that those Cardinal teams had going for them is that they played longer series back then compared to today. That gave them a much better chance to extend a streak. For example, that 1943 Cardinals team lost the first four games of a series to Pittsburgh, yet they were still able to keep the streak alive because it was a six game series and they won the final two games.

  17. I have the original game on DVR. I just timed it with my stopwatch twice and I got 11.2 seconds both times. Of course that's not an exact science but just throwing that out there.
