  1. Flaherty certainly looks like a guy who could use a fresh start and a change of scenery. Curious what we gave up but  I can’t see the price being crazy. If Flaherty can regain some of his form and help this team down the stretch and into the playoffs I will be happy.

This team is still likely 2-3 years away from seeing the full realization of the talent they have collected. Given the success of this year it is reasonable to add a piece that is not to costly in terms of talent and focus on acquiring some arms during the off-season. It was hard being patient during those leans years and it is hard now but it makes all the sense in the world to be cautious THIS year and not do anything that would hurt our chances of building a team that be dominate over the next five years.

I know some will not be happy with this move but I am good with it so long as the O’s show a willingness to spend some money this off-season to address the pitching holes they need to. If they fail to do that then my patience might begin to wane

Means was probably better than anything they’ll get at the deadline so not sure that’s much of a positive, but I see where you’re going with that

John Means at 100% I would agree. Not so sure though we would have seen that version of Means this year.

Unfortunate though. I would have liked to seen him come back this year.

We all know Mateo has been struggling pretty bad at the plate right now but I still prefer him as our starting shortstop at least throughout the rest of the year. His defense is still pretty solid and he provides us tremendous speed and is the only true base stealer not named Mullins. I remember Ozzie Smith prior to him becoming a consistent .280 hitter was still a valuable member of the Cardinals.

When we get into some close games in August, September, and hopefully October, teams will do everything they can to keep him off the bases. Having that kind of threat goes a long way! I would like to him stop swinging at the first pitch.

I would certainly not move him for peanuts but would not cry if he were to be included in a deal for a SP.

It's not a matter of disliking Mateo for me, quite the contrary I respect the hell out of the work he has put in to improve his offensive game. I just think his value has substantially improved, he plays a position of organizational depth, and would I would not lose my mind if the team moved him to improve the rotation. That said, will be happy also to see him on the roster at the end of the season.

  4. I'm just enjoying the ride and grateful to watch talented players, play winning baseball.

Still feel like the best is yet to come in 2024-2027 and perhaps beyond, but this team will be fun to watch this year also. After the lean years, I am just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round with a great big happy smile on my face.

  5. I think that Adley kind of ushered in a new karma for this organization. There are rare players who bring with them an air of confidence, an expectation of success, and a firey competitive disposition that is somehow balanced by a cool confident demeanor even when the going is tough. Adley is one of those guys. He also happens to play the position on the field that maximizes his reach and effect.

Over the past several years most of my baseball time has been spent going to various minor league affiliates and watching the youth progress. It's been fun to watch. Adley has been a joy to watch play. Looking forward to what comes next.

  6. Maybe so but let's see how things look in June. I am not saying it won't be an issue, just saying it's a little early to make that judgment.

It's been an issue for at least the last year.

  7. The Orioles better get some innings from their starters or this bullpen is gonna be wiped out by May.

It's early, not terribly uncommon for pitchers to not go that deep.

If its still a major issue in June, then I might jump on board.

  8. Arrieta at it again, thru 6. Perfect.

Why couldn't he perform like this for us.

Not only perfect through 6 he has hit a HR to boot lol

He is so dominate right now its silly. Guys are just clueless against him.

  9. Probably too little too late, but Davis' walk-off still gave me some joy. Schoop's homer too. And the defense was excellent tonight.

It's been a rough couple weeks. It was nice to have something to be excited about.

It always feels better when we win than lose.

  10. I know this is a good vibes thread but this team has beaten the **** out of me, emotionally, lately. The O's losing casts a whole negative tint to life. I take sports too seriously.

Even so winning today just felt like too little too late. I hope we make something happen. Lord I need it.

I hear ya. Today I had to load a good playlist and take a half hour jaunt in the woods just to get my head in a good place to watch the game.

Your not alone in this regard.

  11. Exactly. It's hard to envision where he will be when he reaches his prime in 4 years. I don't think Trout will be the MVP then.

I pray to god he will be in Baltimore. Priority #1 this offseason had better be to get him inked to a deal. I don't care if its the only thing we do next offseason and we have to roll with AAA guys to fill our other holes lol (j/k but you know what I mean I think). My fear is if we don't get it done this offseason and the team slides back some in the standings next year, it will be near impossible to get him signed as he will likely just play out the final two years (after next season) and cash in as a FA.

Again for dramatic effect ....he has to get done, its imperative in my opinion. Machado is a franchise cornerstone of a very rare type. You cant let that kind of guy just walk.

  12. Coming into today, Cespedes has OPS'd four points less in an almost identical number of ABs since joining the Mets: .612. I can tell you out here in Queens that no Mets fan is calling him a wimp.

Just like Cespedes helps the rest of the lineup and stabilizes the OF, I'm very glad to have Davis back at first, Parmalee/Snider gone, and a dependable defender with a great arm in RF. Let's give him more than 11 games to see if he can get hot again with the bat.

While I would agreee with you in principle, not to many Mets fans are sweating what they gave up for Cespedes as their farm system is far better.

I would argue that most of the angst about Parra revolves around the fact we gave up one of the few good pieces we have for him. If we had 8-10 other guys of similar talent to Davies like the Mets have.....we might be complaining that he has not lived up to expectations but the vitrole would be far less.

  13. OK. Even if you take that stance, if he signs during the negotiating window for market value, it can't be with another team. As I said before, that wouldn't have been possible without the trade.

Yea thank god we had that window with Nick and Cruz this offseason without it we would never have convinced them to stay.

  14. Because he likes his experience in Baltimore, or any of a myriad of other reasons?

Again, there is a difference if he doesn't hit the market. There would be no competition they'd have to outbid.

I don't get why in this situation, ignoring context is seen as the more accurate means of evaluation.

The guy is having a career year and you seriously think he is gonna sign a deal to stay here "cause he likes his experience here" ? He will sign a deal here if the money DD put on the table is roughly what he and his agent think they can get on the market. Otherwise he is a rental.

  15. One way or another, we've hit 210+ homers three years in a row. Wieters, Machado, Davis, Schoop and Hardy are all good bets to hit more homers in 2015 than they did in 2014. It's no certainty that we can make up for losing Cruz, but I think the chances are decent enough, depending on what else we do this offseason.

Well said. Its not the end of the world.

  16. I am hopeful we can plug Wieters in.

I am to but I would have liked plugging MW in along with Cruz a lot more.

Think we can be competitive and still think we can win the division but I also think pretending like losing that amount of production is akin to being in denial. It just got a good bit harder to accomplish those goals IMO until DD pulls yet another rabbit out of the hat. My hope is that DD being a man of multiple options has a plan and that the plan will ultimately work out.

  17. That is a lot to replace. I believe that giving him that contract would have hurt us more than remembering the great times will.

Don't get me wrong I am not a "the sky is falling" person. I am a realist though and losing that amount of production hurts even if its just say 60% of it. I also do not see how 4/57 would have impeded the Orioles in any way from doing anything else they wanted to over the next four years. The money is there. I would have much rather just signed Cruz and let Nick walk

  18. I believe that we would have had to replace it anyway. Just like we had to replace Davis' monster production. I don't believe it is real. Or at least, what you could count on.

It will be very difficult to get what Cruz gave us, last year.

I do not believe that Nelson Cruz will have a 5 WAR season for Seattle. That's the huh?

    Gotcha.

I doubt Nelson would have replicated last season but I also doubt he would have fallen off the map like CD did.

Even if he put up 60% (why I picked that number) and I think that is very reasonable to assume he would have here, that is a lot to replace.

  19. How did we replace Chris Davis' 2013 production. The Mariners will be looking to replace Nelson Cruz' 2014 production as well.

    Huh?

We replaced CD's production by getting a monster year from Cruz. Frankly we got lucky, even DD was not counting on that.

If you want to believe that Cruz and his production were expendable and will be easily replaced that is cool, I just think that is looking at through Orange colored lenses. Maybe CD does bounce back, maybe not. Maybe MW picks up some of the slack, maybe not. Point is that if those things happen, we would still have been a lot better with Nelson Cruz on the team also.

When you subtract a guy who put up even 60% of the numbers he did last year then your team is taking a hit. I still hope DD has a rabbit in the hat, he may well have one but as it stands now, till the rabbit comes out this team is worse off for not having Nelson on it.
