In that world, the Orioles have no other players in their system that can play on the left side of the infield and in the event of that, they would still put Holliday at third with Gunnar staying at SS. You can keep throwing out stuff until it lands on something that supports your position in this debate if you want but only time will tell.

In no world is this happening and this kind of take really diminishes your points. Holliday's flaw defensively *at this point* is his arm strength. There is absolutely no shot they would move him to third and leave Gunnar at SS in that scenario. That really makes no sense.

I don't get why folks seem so certain he can improve significantly on defense.

Defense peaks early and he's had the absolute best coaching his whole life.

This might be who he is.

Defense doesn't peak at age 19.

Also, who is reporting that he needs to improve "significantly" on defense? He wouldn't be the #1 overall prospect if that was the case.

It’s fascinating to me how the opinions on Cowser vary so much.   He’s got three evaluations in the top 40 (including as high as 19) and two outside the top 100.   And listening to Longenhagen on Effectively Wild, Cowser wasn’t a borderline case for him, he was way outside the top 100.

Somebody’s going to be proven very wrong about Cowser, I just don’t know who yet.

It's interesting but makes sense. A 23 year old former top 10 draft pick who put up a .937 OPS in AAA with good exit velos is usually a lock to be in a top 100. On the other hand, he's a corner outfielder who will most likely never hit lefties well enough to be an impact everyday player. Good news is Kjerstad is going to be a stud imo.

Red Sox sell some 2024 wins to the Royals, giving up John Schreiber for a $400K college arm with a good A-ball season

Not sure I consider trading an aging .1 fWAR reliever as selling wins. That’s a decent deal for the Sox

Yes, but it's not that simple.  IF we replace Santander with a player who can replicate much of his value internally, like Mayo for example, then we don't need to replace all 2.6 WAR by the pitcher we acquire.

That's a pretty massive IF. I don't really understand why you would take on that kind of risk at this time. Kjerstad will receive plenty of playing time this year and Santander doesn't have to be moved for it to happen. Mayo is 22 years old. If there's a lengthy injury to Hays, Mountcastle or O'Hearn, or if Cowser/Kjerstad have a brutal stretch in the majors, it would sure be nice to have an established, consistent big leaguer on the team to help weather the storm. It's not 2019 anymore and Elias, Sig etc. don't operate the way some people on this board do. Just because you have good prospects behind them doesn't mean you get rid of the established big leaguers. Keeping Hays, Mullins and Santander after 2021 is one of the smartest things Elias has done since taking over.

Point being, we don't just need to account for what the pitcher himself brings, but part of the value of Santander will be replaced internally.  If we trade him for a 1 WAR relief pitcher and some prospects, that could be a net gain for the team as we strengthen the bullpen without really harming the defense or offensive production, depending on performance by those who replace him of course.

Or, given the volatility of reliver performance, the 1 WAR pitcher you think you are receiving regresses or gets hurt and you are clearly the loser of the deal. At this stage, I just don't see Elias trading an every day player of Santander's caliber for a reliever. It's bad business. Elias has shown that he is able to build a good bullpen and doesn't need to give up a top 50 hitter in baseball to do it. There are multiple solid pitching prospects in the upper minors in this system and plenty of guys that will be on waivers that are options in the bullpen. Let Santander play out the year, throw him a QO and take the pick. That is the smartest play which is why Elias will handle it that way.

That said, I don't think he gets traded.  But nor do I think it would be this huge, gapping hole left in our lineup if he is.

I think there's a relatively solid chance it's a pretty big hole left in the lineup. Definitely a higher chance of happening than what you laid out in your post imo.

I am pretty comfortable going on record to say that Kjerstad will have a better year than JD Martinez, if we give Kjerstad the ABs.

I’m as big of a Kjerstad guy as anyone but that seems pretty unlikely to me. At least at the plate. I’d much rather have Martinez for next year than Mountcastle or O’Hearn but there are better ways to upgrade this team.

Anyone know what he dislikes about Cowser?

He can't hit lefties and isn't a true CF. I'm kinda surprised he is still present/so high on so many of these lists.

This must be a done deal if Rubenstein is on the phone with the Gov.   Seems like this is money in the bank.

It's a done deal. I mean you'd hope the Governor wouldn't be publicly congratulating these guys off a rumor.

"Moore expressed optimism on Wednesday during his first public remarks about the deal. He opened a meeting of the state Board of Public Works in Annapolis by congratulating Rubenstein, Arougheti and Ripken.

“We are very much looking forward to a continuation of the strong relationship between the state of Maryland and the Baltimore Orioles,” said Moore, who wore an orange striped tie.

Moore highlighted the lease deal that the Orioles and the state finally negotiated and signed in December. Though the deal was struck with Angelos, it is binding on any subsequent owners of the team.

“We’re thrilled because being able to keep the Orioles in Baltimore for a long period of time was a key priority for this administration and this team,” Moore said. “And we are very proud that the deal that this group solidified months ago means that regardless of this transaction, this will never change. These are the Baltimore Orioles and they are going nowhere.”

To put their own stamp on things.  They might not even be aware of who Elias is.  They might just think the Orioles have mostly sucked and now we're in charge so we're going to mix things up.  And we must be the smartest people to do it because we're super-rich.

Don't underestimate the pride factor with some folks.

They absolutely know who Elias is. I don't see how you could buy a team and not know who the GM is. I'm sure they are also well aware of the manager and all of the players on the team. Rubenstein liked a tweet about Gunnar Henderson just a few days ago.

Instead I'd rather trade out of this needlessly deep depth and either get multiple pieces that are further away or an upgrade to the ML OD roster.

First of all, there is no such thing as "needlessly deep" depth. It would be nice if they were able to get an upgrade to the ML roster but there has to be a partner. I think people are massively overestimating how many teams are out there begging to have Cowser, Norby and Ortiz. So you're either giving up that depth for peanuts or trading them for lower level prospects which makes no sense and is never going to happen.

I think it’s been Cease all along but if Getz won’t come off his price (someone on the WS posted a blurb suggesting he’s been asking for Mayo) then I think Elias might pivot to someone like Lorenzen  on a 1-year contract.

I agree but not being able to get something done and having to settle for someone like Lorenzen would be a massive failure. You would think after how poorly he did at the deadline last season, Elias would take a bigger swing. I still think he is a good GM and the team will be in the mix this year no matter what but man, Kimbrel and Lorenzen after a 100 win season and no playoff wins would be a laughable outcome.

Hard to prove but it’s the conventional wisdom.   More sense of urgency for playoff contenders and more competition for the same pool of available pitchers.

More sense of urgency for playoff contenders, maybe. Is there the same pool of available pitchers though? Seems like every year teams that needed innings or aren't explicitly tanking shop guys at the deadline that weren't available before opening day.

He's not even an upgrade over Gibson.  I'm not sure he's an upgrade over 2022 Lyles.

His pitch data from last year was better than both of them. Pretty clearly too. But 25 starts in over 3+ years is about as big of a red flag as there is.

No, the implication is that they don’t see a deal happening anytime soon. They clearly need another starter, so they got one of the 2 out of the way.

There is no implication that they are “all but out” with what Heyman is saying.

Very clearly is. But common sense could've told you that anyway.

    Keep going….

, the Yankees saw even less hope anything could be accomplished anytime soon there.

That’s a far cry from “all but out”

What? lol  The implication is very obvious. They aren't seriously pursuing him at this point.
