Yastrzemski was not supposed to be on this list.
Everybody promised.

But, not as bad as last year
Things will get better

I haven’t studied the matter, but I’m not sure I believe the calculation in that article. I’d think that if Fangraphs itself believed it, they’d change the valuations they publish for position players. But they haven’t done so.
PS - Note that the article was using data from 2006 to 2017. Per Fangraphs, the value of 1 WAR in 2006 was $4.8 mm. So $5.7 mm for position players over that entire 12 year period is more plausible. That doesn’t tell you what the market rate is today.
It’s likely not a very simple calculation using real-time data, so it must be pieced together using years prior when all the variables are known.
I would imagine that each team can better individually keep track of this within the organization, so it migh5 be something in Sig’s “Matrix”, or somehow come into play during negotiations and payrolls, but maybe not...

Sorry for calling him an idiot.
What about Hyde’s decision to leave DJ Stewart in the game as well?
Just to point out the irony... Calling Hyde an idiot is “too tough”, but Hyde risking our players physical health is just “testing them”.
Hyde also got into a very public dust up with Chris Davis. I guess that’s ok because it’s the whipping boy Chris Davis.
Let’s just say Hyde isn’t making the best of decisions over the last couple of weeks.
He is a rookie manager.
He wants all these guys to succeed, so maybe he lets them play the game they love for too long?

I have to say it... it was pretty reckless of Hyde to keep Harvey out there for 30+ pitches in an inning. His FB was good but he was laboring through the tough part of the lineup. He should’ve been pulled after Rendon. Instead he faced Soto and then Cabrera.
Hyde is kind of an idiot for that.
Hyde was the only guy willing to take the job and I can’t wait till he’s gone. He’s nothing more than Bo Porter 2.0.
With a post like this and you are calling Hyde the idiot?
The man has more baseball sense coming out of his used socks than you do coming out of your keyboard

Every report I've read said this was Peter Angelos personally doing the negotiating with Davis and his agent. Behind the scenes, I doubt that Duquette supported it, with maybe Buck and/or Brady in support of a deal, but that's an assumption on my part, with no reports either way. We do know Adam Jones was very vocal about it.

Do the Orioles get a pass on Yaz? If so, why?

I would upvote all of these things but the mods have put me in jail for some reason.

Doesn't he forfeit the remaining money if he retires? So no chance.
I could stand being embarrassingly bad at my job for 70 million...
Is there any other way out of this? I don’t know enough about baseball contracts, but it just feels like he would save himself the suffering.
I just don’t get it, though.
Change your batting stance.
Take some pitches.
Bunt.
Hit right handed.
DO SOMETHING Chris.

This has gotten beyond embarrassing. Save some face and don’t embarrass yourself or the Orioles franchise any more.
This franchise is broken with you under contract and cannot be fixed.
You owe it to the fans to at least change your batting stance or something, but this is beyond pathetic.
This franchise deserves better.

I had never heard of Gio Urshela before this year. Now he's like the best player I've ever seen. So I looked him up. Many years in the minors. Usually in the .600s or .700s OPS. One year at .825. This year with the NYY he's at .940. I can't find him on any team's top 30 prospect list.
Seriously. What are they doing to these guys? They have 4 guys with over a .900 OPS this year. I had never heard of two of them. The other two are Cameron Maybin and DJ LeMahieu. The mighty Luke Voight's OPS is .885. Maybin has been in the MLB for decades it seems like. He hasn't achieved a .700 OPS in 7 years. He's at .921.
Mike Tauchman did have an awesome OPS in the PCL once, but I cannot find him on any Rockies top 30 prospect list for MLB pipeline. He's at .960 in almost 200 ABs.
LeMahieu had a great 2016 in Colorado, but has been under .800 every other year of his career, including in the minors absent a 33 game stint the year he was called up.
This is madness. We need to hire away their batting coach and performance enhancement drug specialists.
Like we struggle to get even ONE player that plays above their potential like that.....but the Yankees seem to be able to make every player play well above their ceiling.
And teams just GIVE these guys to the Yanks (Urshela, Voit, Tauchman, etc...)

Oh Boy! More records will fall today.
4-1 early.

When I first got on this message board I got “talked to” about downvoting others.
I guess you have to be in the club.
Whatever.

Simple, this is a rant you posted in Orioles Talk. Not sure why I didn't downvote the original, I must have been in a rare good mood.
We have a forum for rants, if you had posted this there I'd have been cool with it.
The Yankees are playing the Orioles. It is the sixth inning. You gotta be kidding me.

The man is fun to watch.

No one is going to trade for Villar, but no one is going to pay him 7 million in arbitration either.
He’ll be here till November(or whenever the tender deadline is) and then go away.
Cuz he sucks!

Not sure about $8 mm, but I’ll bet someone will pay him $7 mm next year.
I am guessing it will be because an arbitrator says that is what he is worth in the current environment. He would be worth more to me, as an Oriole, for the reasons listed.
I am a season ticket holder, and I want to watch fun baseball up to and including when we finally win something.

Are we allowed to have this thread again?

No need to pay Villar 7-8 milllion next year when you can pay Alberto .5 million
No one is paying him 7-8 million, and a baseball field has 7 position players.
