The comp is better than Grayson because at least Cowser was a hitter who was struggling and looked to have a hole in his swing.

But yea, I don’t think sending him down made him a better player which is the victory people are taking laps on.0

Sending Jackson down does nothing, there is nothing left to prove down there. He is taking good ABs, he is working counts, he looks fine in the field etc. I have used the Cowser comp, not to say he should be sent down, in the sense that Cowser looked particularly lost at times during his callup last year. Jackson is facing some professional adversity for the first time as a professional keep running him out there.

The fortunate thing is he isn't hurting the team in a significant way right now, and when it finally does click the Orioles will be just that much better.

  2. I'm old enough to remember the days of arguing about :::swoon::: Kasey Kotchman, so I don't begrudge a lot of people "missing," on O'Hearn. Especially because it was totally reasonable to think that he wouldn't have been the impact player he has become.

  3. The other thing we have to note is that this Twins series is the first series the Orioles have opened up against a currently sub 500 team. The National League is putting up some absolutely gaudy offensive numbers right now and the Brewers and Pirates lead their league in RA and the Royals lead all of the MLB with only 48 RA so far on the season.

The Orioles have had a pretty tough schedule to open the year, all things being equal.

  4. Not worried at all, we are still les than 20 games in and stats can look real weird. Like, there is no way that both Hays and Holliday have sub 100 BAs for the rest of the year. Things tend to even out. They aren't chasing, they aren't K'ing so this is an anomaly.

  5. Against Detmers they had a lot of loud outs as I remember many batted balls over 100 mph that resulted in outs. The approach was fine, the hits didn't fall.

  6. Comcast has been doing this with all the regional sports networks around the country. They know that live sports are the major drivers of subscriptions for bloated packages that most people don't consume in any meaningful way.

I share my MIL Xfinity login so I can stream from the MASN app. The app is certainly NOT the best, but any port in a storm. Hopefully new ownership means we can have a direct streaming option sooner than later.

I swear, make a deal with one of the local broadcast affiliates to put the game on one of the alternate areial channels. I know some people might be upset with reruns of the Rifleman being pre-empted during the summer but dang just do it.

All that said, I am old enough to remember the HTS days, when it was a "premium," channel so watching the Orioles on TV was a luxury that I did not have a lot growing up. The more things change...

  7. Stowers, Cowser, and Kjerstad all have "something to prove," this spring none of them really set the world on fire with their ML at bats last year. Heston at least held his own at the plate for his 30 ABs, Cowser to me looked particularly lost at both the plate and in the field.

I agree that Stowers is the guy most likely to be moved, because there just isn't a place for him, though I think he will need to have a good spring training to garner significant interest.

I know you are a bit of an Angelos family apologist, but come on now, that's not a high bar to get over when it comes to his father running things.

JA has done one thing right and that was hiring Elias. Now that's a major thing and worthy of getting props for, but his sliminess overall just hurts even that accomplishment.

Its not a high bar - but its one that most ownership groups do not even attempt to cross. Give credit where credit is due is all Im saying.

  9. I guess we will never really know: I voted no but I'm on the fence really.

The Orioles have made big, positive, trades in the Angelos era. But this is the first I can think of where elite controlled players were traded for a clear pro-active move.

Bedard we were going to lose in FA, maybe Hoey for Hardy is somewhat comparable here? But Im not sure if we expected to get from Hardy what we got at the time.

I guess we'll never know if acquiring Burnes was directly related to Rubenstein buying the team, but it is interesting that the O's added $15 mill (or whatever Burnes arbitration salary was) to the 2024 payroll.  It seemed to me there was very little hope of adding much payroll at all, maybe a 5th starter or non elite reliever.  Maybe this is John Angelos' nice gesture as he exits, knowing Rubinstein not him will be paying the increased payroll.

If there is one thing that we can say about John Angelos is that he is leaving the team in a much better position than it was in when he became the point person. I know that became official in 2020 - but he was COO and an EVP all the way back to 99, I figure he was probably functionally leading things for a bit longer than the official 2020 transfer.

So Burnes will be 30 at the end of next year when he is a FA. He will play all on 2025 at 30 as he has an October Birthday. So what would be a reasonable extention foe him?

    Comps:

    1) Gerrit Cole, Yankees: 9 years, $324 million (2020-28); Age 29 season to begin, had not won a CYA, 3 time AS.

    2) Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals – 7 years, $245M (2020-26); Age 31 season, had not won a CYA, 3 time AS

    3) David Price, Red Sox,  7 years, $217 million (2016-22); Age 29 season, one CYA, 5 time AS

    4) Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers, 7 years $215 million (2014-2020); Age 26 season, 3 time CYA, one MVP, 4 time AS

    5) Zach Greinke, D-backs, 6 years, $206.5 million (2016-21); Age 32, one CYA, 2 GG, 3 time AS

2025 best case scenario for Burnes (he is both an AS and wins the CYA in 2024) Age 30 season, 2 CYA, 4 time AS.

So I would speculate that a reasonable offer to Burnes for a FA contract next year would be right around Strasburg money: 7 years and $250 M. Any thoughts on that?

I think that is reasonable for him to expect. I think the Orioles would be foolish to give it to him. However, lets say they do but it is significantly front-loaded (something like 70% of the value is in the first four years) maybe that would be a thing?

Still, this might be one year of Burnes, so be it. Maybe he experiences the immaculate vibes of the team and clubhouse and says, "I want to ride with this for a bit." and takes a four year deal with two mutual options?

The important thing is the team is in the position to HAVE this conversation because they made the move.

  12. This was the type of move the Orioles needed to start making. I love Hall, but he is still all potential at this point. Ortiz is blocked, barring injuries and whatnot, so him languishing in the minors doesn't help him or the Orioles he always seemed to be the most likely trade piece to me.

6 years of Hall vs 1 year of Burnes - yeah I get that, but sometimes i think you do the short-term move if it genuinely moves the needle and a guy like Burnes does that. The Orioles are in the thick of it now and sometimes you need to trade the potential for the right now.

The Macphail/Duquette years with Buck were good while it lasted.  I got to go to a playoff win!  We swept the Verlander/Scherzer/Price Tigers!  That's not nothing.  Some teams haven't had that kind of success that recently, and we're already back near the top.

Oops.  Some article I read the other day credited Angelos and I was too young to remember.  I stand corrected!

I remember it being that too that Angelos wanted Oriole Park, and Jacobs wanted "Camden Yards," as the reference to the neighborhood and history of the area.

I actually admired him for taking that stand and refusing to field a scab team during the strike.  Those issues were a matter of principle for him.  Refusing to play in a corrupt international market certainly hurt the team's ability to develop talent, but MLB profited from an immoral practice, IMO.

Defector did a "better hate an owner," article on Angelos and the vibe of it was that Angelos seemed like a decent enough guy that was on the right side of a lot of history. One steelworker quoted in an article said something along the lines of: "Peter Angelos was the only one standing up for us." That is a lot of good intentions that led to terrible executions.

Someone who is obviously in the know with all of this told me to watch for a Leonsis angle coming up soon. I would not be surprised at all if he ends up buying MASN. I just hope he gets rids of this stupid MASN one and MASN two thing and gives each team the same network always.

MASN predates the switch to digital broadcasting so that might not be an issue like it was. Otherwise Baltimore’s market just gets crushed if that happens.
