  1. One thing interesting that WS board continued to bring up is the age of certain prospects.  I certainly understand that 23 year old will be rated higher than 25 year old.  However,  WS normally trade away players before their hitting free agency.  Those 2 years may not make any difference if they become competent major leaguers by 28 year olds.

They were but so were Os fans.

This trade isn’t really that different than Kjerstad, Norby and Beavers and plenty here would have felt that was an overpay.

Totally agree.  All fan bases will be like that.  Cease really is a difficult player to rate as well.

It is obvious that the White Sox wanted pitching heavy returns from the beginning with what they asked from the Reds.

  3. Many in the WS forum still thinks Cease is one of the best pitcher in MLB and did not get enough for him.  Many in the Padres forum thinks the trade was sever overpay.  This alone makes the trade close to even.  😄

  4. What is the status of Carter Baumler this spring?  Is he healthy now after several injured years?  He was such highly regarded prospect when drafted.

  5. There are several things that teams do I cannot understand.

    1. Signing DH only players

    2. Draft and develop exclusively relief pitchers

    3. Spending a high draft pick on 1B

Obviously, there are some exceptions but these limit team's roster options.

  6. Trading for major bullpen arms quite often turns into bad investment.  For every Andrew Miller (some may say this was not a good trade), there are many disasterous ones like Jorge Lopez, Heathcliff Slocomb, Larry Anderson, Eric Gagne, John Rauch, so on.  Trading for elite relief pitchers sounds good yet many of them they do not work out well.  It is much better to develop them or make low key moves.  Look at the Orioles bullpen or the Yankees.  Very good bullpen arms without investing heavily into them.  Kimbrell signing was an out of character siging for Elias.

  7. There is one pitching category that Cease is #1 in past 3 years for qualified pitchers, and it is not even close: pitches thrown per inning.  Also, he has thrown more pitches than anyone over that time frame.  Is that good or bad?

Hopefully we can get this to 400 pages or so by Opening Day.

Why stop at 400?  Considering how this thread has turned into Burnes vs Cease in statistical anlaysis instead of actual results, we can carry this on until they retire.  ;)

Let's add pitch efficiency and pitch/innings to discussion. :)

The Angelos family is hoarding money in an attempt to retain ownership after Peter’s passing. The tax bill will be huge. That’s my theory anyway.

How does this work?  Peter Angelos was a majority owner with many other minority owners, right?  Or was this a corporation?

  10. Like someone said earlier, the White Sox expected a heavy bidding war to develop for Cease.  Obviously, this has not happened and unlikely to happen.  Of all the teams supposedly been "in" on Cease, only the Orioles have been the constant.  All others took other options.  Obviously, this does not mean others will stay away.  One thing that is obvious is that Getz wants more than what the Orioles are willing to give up.  He is making a big risk by waiting since I doubt Elias will blink.

So we should just push this off until the playoff push... when are the supposed to get it then? Even during Gunnar Henderson adjustment period he still had a higher  OPS than Mateo had last year

This "adjustment" period is not constant.  For some, it is quite a bit longer.  Even longer than a season.

I'd put Cabrera a notch ahead. He's had more experience at the MLB level and has had some success as a starter. I get you're point though. They are both raw talents.

DL Hall has less than 1 year of ML experience but definitely showed improvement in control even if as relief pitcher. Cabrera has no option, and walk rate got slightly worse last year.  I would think DL Hall would be just as good of a candidate as Cabrera for the rotation.

Despite that wildness, he has excellent statcast numbers, a career 4.01 ERA, a 3.79 xERA last year, lots of missed bats, etc…

He has had some durability issues and obviously the command and control is an issue but we have to hope the Os can fix that at least somewhat.  Just get that walk rate under 4 or so.

Question then is how is Cabrera different from DL Hall?
