Yeah, I think I’ll stop now.
Of course, now that the cupboard is bare.

I do.
- I want to see them redefine baseball by building and sustaining a farm, and trading strategically toward the end of team control for more resources to put back on the assembly line, creating a perpetually winning team.
- Fixed that up for you a bit.

I'm never going to agree with this idea.
I've not seen any evidence that a stripped to bare bones franchise brings more than one with a normal payroll.
If anything a low payroll tells me they aren't selling and are instead pulling as much profit from the team as they can on a year by year basis.
If someone is paying a billion for a team I don't think an extra 30Million a year in payroll is going to be a deal breaker.
I'll believe they are selling the team when it actually happens.
Why would they need to sell if they are making millions of dollars every year and are barely doing anything.
They'll probably keep doing this until the franchise is basically a corpse.

Can’t wait to hear the response to this one.
I'm reading Elias' quotes and can't help but think this guy just needs to be quiet. ( I wanted to say shut-up. )
This is embarrassing.
Can you imagine the Yankees or Red Sox GM saying these things.
If Brian Cashman ever said these things he'd be eaten for lunch.

I don't think the money is as crazy as people like to think. There's a lot of money in this sport.
Don't let them ever tell you there isn't enough money.
There is plenty.

For me, liftoff is a dramatic word that creates an expectation of dramatic action, especially combined with his other comments at other times about increasing the payroll. I was never confident that we were going to get dramatic action, given the ownership situation, but his statements implied that, which is why he's clearly having to walk it back now.
For all that he's done, Elias still needs to prove that he can land this plane. The 2022 team was a happy accident, that he didn't do a thing to support while it was happening. We still don't know what it looks like when he's actually trying to build a good big league team. People talk about the Astros model, but that involved a number of pretty aggressive trades, some of them during the first summer that they started winning again. There's a lot of off-season left, so we'll see. It's hard to be patient with this franchise these days.
Yes, I think he is trying to walk it back now.
Words are powerful and his choice of wording was poor.

What’s with these weird signings so far? Aren’t these the types of players who will be there forever? … You know the “non-needle movers”.
Wouldn’t make sense to acquire the real pieces First? And then maybe tinker with the edges?
I’m starting to get that old feeling more and more that the O’s are up to their same b/s selves.
There have to be more meaningful moves coming soon aren’t there? How else does the org plan to recapture the fan/city’s interest?
I know my post may come across a little cynical, but after the last 5 years (really 30+) can anyone blame me? I keep holding out hope that things are and will be different this time and then I keep checking Free Agency news and while other teams are adding serious players, we are doing stuff like this.
C'mon get with the program.

Teams can’t help themselves from being stupid.
They are paying until he is 41!!!
I know. Imagine that. Chris Davis is going to be paid $42 Million dollars from 2023-37.
He will be 51 when it is all said and done.

Crane had some of the best front office staff personnel in baseball during that run.
Having said that, Abreu has a chance to maintain his level of performance. I just don’t support the Orioles paying $19.5 mil per for 3 years on that bet.

I liked Abreu as a fit here, but I'm surprised he got 3/$60M. I liked him at somewhere around 2/$36 and would have MAYBE considered a third year at something like 3/$50ishM, but this ended up higher than I expected. I think he'll be worth it in 2023, but his age gives me pause.
I really liked the idea of bringing him in. His track record suggests he will be worth the money he's being paid but only time will tell.

This kind of contract happens when an owner fires his GM and decides he can Steinbrenner or Moreno his way through.
George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees from 1973 - 2010. The team had 7 World Series appearances producing 5 Titles.
Jim Crane, owner of the Houston Astros since 2011. The team has had 4 World Series appearances producing 2 Titles.
Peter Angelos, owner of the Orioles since 1993. Zero World Series appearances.

That sometimes is not for 35 y/o bat only players whose power fell off a cliff last year.
Maybe not so much in the way of HR's but if he stays healthy I think he will provide plenty of hitting for the Astros.
