It won’t shock me to see him recalled after the break. Who he replaces is the question.

Yes, hopefully this is his minor league swan song.  I would assume Irvin goes down or to the pen but if Kremer gets lit up again it could get interesting.

  2. Don’t have a point of reference, but I believe Weaver was opposed to trading DeCinces because he thought Cal could play shortstop.  They never did find a long-term 3B to pair with Cal.

I always wondered if the decline of the mid-80’s would’ve been avoided had they kept DeCinces and Dennis Martinez and focused on improving the OF defense.

Looking for a resource that lists the team's marketing slogans by year. I tried Googling, but didn't have much luck. In lieu of a complete list I'd settle for a top 10 list. Here's what I was able to find (so far).

    2022 - Chaos Comin'

    2014 - We Won't Stop

    2012 - BUCKle Up

    1989 - Why Not?

1991 - Thanks for the Memories

John Angelos said in February after they didn't sign the extension that he thought they would probably sign the new lease during the All Star break.

John doesn’t have a great track record of delivering on his self-proclaimed timelines but I expect it to happen at some point this year.  The state is promising the O’s more money to keep them than Nevada is to attract the A’s.

I can't remember what year it was, and it's likely I'm misremembering it all, but I believe we got swept out of a 3 game series against the Cubs that started an awful losing streak for the O's back when Arietta pitched for them.

2014 - Arrieta beat Gausman in the first game of a Cubs 3-game sweep.  But fortunately it was just a blip - the O’s went home and won 9 of 11.

  6. I had a long drive Wednesday afternoon and listened to Newman and Garceau.  It was the worst radio broadcast I’ve listened to in 45 years as a baseball fan.  They were both constantly behind the play (based on the sound of the bat and the crowd reaction).  On some plays I didn’t really know what happened until the play was over and they told me who was on base where and how many outs there were.

I agree with other posters - have Newman and Garceau focus on studio hosting.  If they need an occasional play-by-play person on the radio side bring up Adam Pohl or one of the other minor league announcers.

Never mind, last time I checked Irvin was listed but Rom is pitching. Is Irvin hurt?

Irvin pitched the first game of Norfolk’s DH tonight and pitched well.  But he can’t come up yet because he hasn’t been down 15 days yet.

Was that Sunday night game the one where we scored 20+ runs and Cal had 6 hits and 2 HR?

That was two years later in ‘99.  The beauty of that ‘97 sweep was that Atlanta started Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine.

  9. This feels like about the start I expected, especially with Tate and Givens out.  While the realistic goal is the playoffs, there are still pieces that will be coming (Means, Hall, Ortiz, Westberg, potential trades) and others still learning at the MLB level (Gunnar, Grayson).  I think that’s why the stated goal is not the division.

I’m looking forward to watching this team continue to grow and get better as the season progresses.

  10. The whole regional sports network model is dying and it’s creating a mess for fans.  In some ways it’s better to be a fan outside a team’s local market - I have no trouble watching the O’s from IN using MLB.TV (unless they’re playing Chicago or Cincy).  If I lived in the Orioles’ market it would cost me a ton more money to follow the O’s, which is just wrong.

If you’re interested in following where this is going, follow John Ourand on twitter or listen to his podcast.  Really interesting how Manfred is trying to get out of this blackout mess.  Plus Ourand is an O’s fan - he’s got an Orioles jacket hanging in the background in the YouTube version of his podcast.

  11. I voted no, although I do feel very good about where this organization is.  My rationale:

    • The off-season “upgrades” were around the edges and may/may not be better than last year.  McCann almost certainly is, but that’s a backup catcher.  While I like Givens he is unlikely to be an upgrade over what Lopez provided last year.
    • I think it’s highly unlikely that the bullpen can repeat last year’s performance.
    • I’m hopeful but not counting on getting more from Adley this year.  If he stays healthy we could, but I also worry about him wearing down given how much the O’s rely on him.
    • I just don’t see the rotation and Gunnar making up for the expected regressions.
    • Other contenders made bigger upgrades.

All that said, I’m really looking forward to seeing Henderson, Rodriguez, and, eventually, Cowser, Norby, Westberg, and Ortiz, begin to establish themselves at the major league level.

I think Eovaldi’s market has really been hurt by his injury concerns. In the first part of the year, he had his normal velo around 96-97 but then it dropped suddenly to 94 in his June 8 start and never came back. When he came back at the end of the year for two starts to prove he was healthy, he had his lowest velo of the year in the first start (93.6) and then it only bounced back to 94.4 in his final start, where it had been the whole year since his sudden drop off.

If injury concerns are limiting his market, he could be looking at a 1 yr deal or 2 yr with an opt out to prove he is healthy and re-enter FA. However, with the QO attached, that puts him in a really tough spot because not many teams are going to be willing to give up the draft capital for that. As a revenue sharing team that would give up less draft capital, it’s possible he could fall into our laps for a deal like that. The whole point of the wall was to make us a more attractive destination for FA pitchers hoping to rebuild value so maybe that’s all we are offering right now and hoping he settles for that.

Eovaldi should have taken the QO.  It doesn’t make sense for the Orioles to take on a multi-year contract with his injury history and his declining velocity.  And it doesn’t make sense to give up a pick for a one-year deal with those risk factors attached.

He pitched 103 last year.  So an ideal season would have him at 125-140 this year.  Understand he didn't get there, but wouldn't you like to try to get 150 out of him next year so he's still there for stretch run/postseason assuming that's needed?  How do you make that feasible?

What I'm afraid they're going to do is start him at Norfolk so they can manage his innings there, and then bring him up once they've reached the point in the season where he can pitch the rest of the way without limits.

This is a huge winter for Mateo.  he should have confidence enough to put in the work to get better for next year.  The Orioles gave him a chance.  He took it.   Now put in the work Mr. Mateo.

Do we know that he doesn't work hard?  I had not heard this but I may have missed something.  My sense has never been that work ethic has been an issue - it's just that he's not a good hitter.

A lot of overreaction in here.

First, nobody is getting cut.  Odor and Chirinos are going to finish out the season on the major league roster.

Second, other than Grayrod, they're unlikely to call anyone else up.  And he'll only be up if it makes sense for his development.

Odor's ABs will be scaled back if they fall further out of contention.  But they're not going to nail him to the bench, and it really isn't going to have a major impact on the amount of ABs available to guys like Henderson, Stowers, and Vavra.

This.  While I would like to see them play Stowers and Vavra more often starting now, my gut tells me that they're going to continue to play as they have over the next 5 games.  If they come out of Toronto in the same or worse position, I anticipate we'll see more ABs for the rookies.

I agree wholeheartedly with your last statement!!!  Relative to the first statement about "how much money", I believe ME has already told us "much of" the increase will come from Arbitration, likely including in-house assets. That puts us in the $17 to 20 M range for FA budget acquisitions. IMHO, John has given ME that budget guidance. In Louis's defense, he became an attorney and took over the law firm, John refused to take the Bar exam, against PA's wishes. IMHO, John has played Georgia. All Louis has done appears to be trying to support the law firm going forward using family assets he no longer has the power to influence, hence the lawsuit. John has apparently threatened him with : "his inheritance is at stake". I don't trust John, never have; Louis spoke eloquently at HOF ceremonies. I trust my gut, however addled.

That’s interesting, as I’ve come away feeling the exact opposite - John is the one to be trusted and Louis has the meddling instincts of his father.  But it could be because I’ve always wanted an owner with a philosophy like John’s - not one like Louis constantly hounding the GM about the moves he’s making.

I am well aware that it’s up to the Orioles whether or not they stay in postseason competition. That said I was curious about how the other teams schedules broke down and the most realistic path.
Starting this MONDAY here are the schedules for each team. HOUSTON and NYY are not included for obvious reasons. One of 3 ALC teams win division.  7 teams for 3 spots.

    OVERALL THOUGHTS

SEATTLE should be investigated if they don’t make the playoffs. In their next 20 games they do play 15 games with contenders . Their last 20 they play zero. They are done with HOUSTON.

In the CENTRAL  Cleveland is currently up 1.0 game over MINN. In an odd twist due to the labor issues they finish at home with 6 games vs KC. The TWINS play CLE 8 games and the CWS 9 games. CWS play CLE only 3 games. As previously mentioned they play MINN 9 times. The ORIOLES play both CWS for 3 games and at CLE for 3. CLE has 15 games left with non contenders, MINN has 13 and CWS have 19.

In the EAST we all know the ORIOLES brutal schedule. They play 8 games with non contenders. They play TOR 10 times, BOS 7, HOU 7, NYY 3. BOSTON plays 9 games vs non contenders. They play TOR 6 games, TB 9, BAL 7, NYY 6.  The BLUE JAYS play 12 non contenders which include 9 straight and 12 of 16. They play the ORIOLES 10 games, BOS 6,  NYY 3 and TB 9. TAMPA BAY has 9 games with non contenders and they play NYY 6, BOS 9, HOU 6 and as mentioned TOR 9 games.

In conclusion we know that teams including the ORIOLES can fall out of it. We also know some games on the schedule late may be meaningless for contenders as well. I really don’t see a path to the playoffs for the ORIOLES unless they finish 3rd in the division. The MARINERS schedule late is extremely weak. Unless they scuffle in the next 20 the odds of them falling are very slim. One potential help for the ORIOLES is the fact that TOR and TB play each other 9 games. One series is 4 and one is 5 games. The best thing for  BAL is for one team to dominate the other. Although the ORIOLES can win the season series with TOR and cannot with TB I still think the best odds are to catch TB. The BLUE JAYS upcoming schedule puts them to go on a run if they play well. Of course it is also entirely possible the 2nd place team in the CENTRAL beats out the 3rd place team in the EAST.  I know the ORIOLES are going to have to get to X number of wins to have a chance but at the end of the day they need to finish in 3rd place to have the most realistic chance.

Great breakdown.  Just feels like the O’s are starting to run out of steam the last 10 days or so.  Going 1-3 (with all losses being by one run) vs. BOS and CHC has really hurt.  Hopefully Gunnar is called up this week to give the team a lift.

I don't think he was as good before.  I'd say this season, particularly in the past 2 or so months, is when he started actually providing good insight into the game, particularly around pitching.  Before that he was mostly cliches and not really adding much other than to rehash the replays.  But he's figured it out.

And I think Kevin Brown does a great job pulling this out of him.  I love when Brown asks him what pitch he'd throw here and why.

Maybe this is a more interesting question...with what technology have you kept up with scoreboard watching over the years.  I'll start as best I can recall:

Internet/smartphone for about the last 12 years

Blackberry when not around a PC before then for maybe 2-3 years

    Internet PC from about 2000-07

A box I had from Stats Inc (forget the name of it, but it was about the size of a pager) in the late 1990s that would allow you to see the score/base/out situation in any game

Earlier in the 1990s--ESPN or the actual scoreboard at Camden Yards, which was a big improvement over Memorial Stadium--In that era I wanted the Orioles to have a "featured opponent" game where they would give the score/base/out situation continuously, but that never came to be.

1990-91 when scoring games in the press box I could go back to the AP (I think) wire to see what was happening in another big game.

1978 through most of the 1980s--postgame show then wait for scores to come up on the 11 PM news or call the scores hotline for the TV station (they all had these set up to avoid calls and that's actually how I found out the final score of the 1980 US/USSR hockey which was showed delayed here)

1971-77 If I didn't catch it on the postgame show, morning paper was the next shot (the Sun did a good job delivering late scores back then, including O's west coast games)

We've come a long way in terms of satisfying our need for instant sports information.

Similar history to you.  The ESPN “bottom line” was a huge upgrade in the 90’s - it was always annoying when it disappeared during commercial breaks.  The other thing I discovered in the late 80’s was the phone service George Michael offered with scores.  Especially useful in the mornings when the O’s were on the west coast!
