  1. Without looking up any stats and just going off the top of my head/eye test, I currently have more confidence in Mateo batting vs a lefty than I do Mullins. And it seems like Hyde agrees, based on this line-up.

Hopefully McCann can bounce back from a rough day on Thursday and maybe McKenna can stay hot.

If O'Hearn as anything close to this player for the entire season, I don't see how the Orioles don't bring him back next year. He's been that good!

100% if he keeps this up, he'll be one of the team's best hitters, they're definitely not just gonna let him walk. If he comes back down to earth and his OPS is slightly below .800, that's when I'll be intrigued to see what they do.

That's a good point and hopefully all this is. They need Grayson to be strong in September and October and may just look at this as a perfect opportunity to shut him down for a bit without losing a pitcher due to DFA. I didn't see anything in Grayson's last start to suggest he was hurt, so maybe a little soreness, which probably every pitcher feels after starts, is a good reason to be able to load manage him for the year.

Saying that, he did throw a 163.1 innings last year between Baltimore and Norfolk and was very strong last year into October, where he was too hyped up (sitting 100 MPH) vs worn down.

My thoughts as well. Would make sense that they want to give him a few week break; allows them to kick the roster crunch dilemma down the road for a few weeks and gives the young stud a couple weeks off to protect him for the length of the season. If he's on the IL for more than 15 days, I'll be surprised.

The problem is finding playing time for him. Can’t take Cowser out of the lineup.

Yep, I think Cowser did Hyde a favor there. If not for Cowser's hot streak, I doubt we would have seen a full platoon take place until mid-summer. Obviously Hays made it a lot easier too with his awful start.

This worked out perfectly imo, I was nervous Cowser wouldn't get a true shot due to Hyde's loyalty to veterans, but now Cowser has forced the issue and should be a full time player for the foreseeable future.

  5. A scout told me his stuff looked pretty bad in his second start when he saw him, so I was pretty concerned coming into this one. Gonna be very interesting to see how this plays out.

I'm sold.   Holliday at 2nd, Gunnar SS, Mayo 3rd, Westburg super utility spelling at 2nd/3rd as needed,  all 4 sharing starts through the week.   Mateo/Urias off the roster.   Make it happen.

Coming into ST I didn't think there was a chance in hell this happens, but after the way Mayo has played...he's almost forced the issue. Trade Urias for a relief pitcher and make it happen

I wouldn't be shocked to see Mayo make the OD roster and Holliday start in AAA.  If Mayo has a nice spring and Holliday doesn't - it will be interesting.

My hope coming into ST was that one of Mayo or Holliday would crack the opening day roster, we really don't have room for both right now. Even if just one makes the team, that will probably mean one of Urias or Mateo has to go.

Trade Urias for a reliever and let Mayo cook!

Another AAAA player. I thought Duquette was gone.

I hope they don't think any of the scrubs they are getting is the replacement for Bradish and Means

32 years old with 51 career major league innings and a 6.27 ERA, why on earth would we assume Elias thinks this guy is a replacement for Bradish and Means?

I personally prefer McKenna to his entire slate of competition: Hilliard, Burdick, Johnson, and Mateo.

But it's hard to not see how the Orioles are protecting themselves in case they have to make the decision to DFA him and he gets claimed. I don't think they know if they will make that move yet, but they're gameplanning for it just in case.

I'm intrigued to see what Hilliard and Burdick bring to the table in Spring Training. Their power potential could be a fun addition to this years club. One interesting aspect of this debate that won't get talked about a lot if McKenna's role in the club house. You can easily see it on TV and Hyde's mentioned it a few times that McKenna is very well-liked in the clubhouse. If neither Hilliard or Burdick crush it in ST, I could see Hyde sticking with McKenna.  I'm sure all three guys and Stowers are really feeling the heat coming into camp, the OF is very crowded.

I have dreamed about a lineup like this for 30 years:

    CF - Mullins

    2B - Holliday

    C - Rutschmen

    SS - Henderson

    RF - Santander

    1B - Mountcastle

    LF - Hays

    DH - Kjersatd

    3B - Westburg

Bench - O'Hearn, Mateo, Urias, McCann

I would have the order slightly different, but given the team make up entering Spring Training, I would be very happy with this being the opening day roster. This scenario would have Mateo being the primary backup CF and Kjerstad being the primary backup LF, which going into spring training are pretty big question marks. I guess O'Hearn played some LF last year but I don't think we want to be seeing that at OPACY on a regular basis.

A little wrinkle I would consider to this scenario. Trade either Mateo and Urias for relief pitching and have one of McKenna, Hilliard, Stowers or Burdick make the team.

  11. In the Minors he's shown good/great power and looks good with the glove. Seems like a RH version of Sam Hilliard, with less MLB experience. At this point I think I prefer both Hilliard and Burdick's skill set over McKenna. I'll be sad to see Ryan go but seems like the writing is on the wall. Between the two prospects, Stowers and now Hilliard/Burdick's arrivals, gonna be an uphill battle for McKenna to make the big league club

  12. Mullins being fully healthy is gonna be a huge help this season, it's not talked about enough. Imagine if he comes anywhere close to his 30/30 season (doubtful I know), but would be a huge addition to the offense. He's also got to be thinking about his upcoming free agency a little bit, back to back .721 OPS seasons, I'm sure he'd love to get back in the .800 range the next two seasons before it's contract negotiating time.

  13. I am curious to see what happens with Hilliard, I think he's a fun upgrade over McKenna. I doubt they have Cowser on the team if he's the backup OF, would make more sense to let him get regular at bats in Norfolk. It's been beaten to the death and is the reason I check OH everyday, but gosh does it make sense for a trade to happen. My vote would be trade Cowser, let Hilliard and McKenna fight over the 4th OF spot and have Heston be the full time DH. That is assuming they refuse to trade one of their current vet OFers. My real preference would be trade Hays, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Even that, did they watch Gunnar last year?

Right, I voted Gunnar, personally. Was very surprised to see the results, based on what we've seen so far, not sure how you can vote Adley over Gunnar.

I would go straight to Irvin at #5 and give him another shot to be the innings eater we traded for. Back-to-back 180 inning campaigns at a decent ERA. He's got the stamina and he seemed to fix something after coming back last season. He's my guy.

Not only do I like Wells and Hall in the bullpen more than starting, but I also think the bullpen really needs those guys in it. If Irvin is going to be at his most useful for this club, it's as a SP.

I don't think I'd go straight to Irvin at 5, but if it ends up being him, I'm happy with that. I think ideally for me, DL Hall surprises us during Spring Training and gets his career as a starter back on track. If that doesn't happen, then my next choice would be Irvin, I'd rather not risk losing Tyler Wells due to fatigue half way through the season. A full season of reliever Tyler Wells is more valuable than half a season of starter Wells, imo.
