  1. My trifling beer league allows one HR over the fence per game before they turn into outs.

    There are never shut outs

Strike outs are met with extreme laughter in the even they happen.

Oh there was lots of laughing until around the 4th or 5th one. And full disclosure, it was a co-ed accounting league, so I think 4 of them were girls.

  2. Sorry, but the idea of a "real softball league" does not compute.

There's a big difference between a coed beer league and a competitive league. Usually the really good players move up from the beer leagues to the competitive because they just have their way with the league and it's not even a challenge anymore.

  3. I've been working on some breaking pitches, but I haven't been able to get them just right yet. I can throw with various spins, which look different to the eye, but it doesn't appear to do a whole lot of good. I've gotten a few swings and misses, but nothing consistent. My teammates told me that the ball does look like it is dancing a bit though, so... progress?

You have to put SO much spin on them to get them to move, and throw it much harder than you typically would, you just have to hope that the break of the pitch will serve as arc. With the slider I use the same grip as on a baseball, but throw it almost like you are putting spin on a bowling ball. Takes a lot of torque (ended up hurting a tendon in my elbow) but if you get the right speed and spin, it will DART out of the zone right before the plate. Froze a couple people throwing it behind them and letting it break out over the plate, but also hit two people with it.

  4. Yea, but a 5 inning shut out? Most games end like 15-10. 9 Ks? That's the real tough one. How in the world do you strike out 9 people with a slow pitch softball?

    I can throw a slider with a softball ;)

Looks like a no-arc meatball nice and slow, and then breaks about 4 feet. One dude twisted his knee he swung and missed so bad. It was also a no limit arc league, so I could drop pitches in on the plate after throwing them a good 15 feet in the air. Took a lot of practice to get the depth down, but that's how I'd get the first two strikes, even if you got a piece of that it was a foul ball, then with 2 strikes, the slider was coming, and I don't think I gave up more than 2 hits on it all season.

  5. What is it with slow pitch softball umpires who call a tight strike zone? Don't they realize that the batter has enough of an advantage already?

Would always drive me crazy when I was pitching. Then one game I complained about it, and he said, "dude, it's the 5th inning, you have a shutout, and 9 strikeouts in slow pitch softball, shut up and throw the ball". (was my best game pitching by far)

  6. Do yours come with stuff like visual auras and nausea? Those can get nasty from what I hear.

Yeah, the nausea is hit or miss, usually just with the worst ones, but the dizzy, the trails, the colors, and the pain have a way of screwing up your day. I've had them often enough that I've learned to be functional with them, some are worse than others, but I don't get the turn off the lights, ear muffs and curl in a ball ones too often thank god.

  7. Yep...HHH kind of quit...meaning he said you have to finish me..then he took a sledgehammer shot and then tombstone.

Taker and Michaels helped HHH out of ring.

Wow, that's a really responsible business side of HHH, putting the business before his own ego. Glad to see that.

  8. Do you guys think there is enough interest into creating a forum for Pro Wrestling? I don't follow this thread but it appears pretty active.

If it helps, I'd say there are about as many posters in this thread as there are in the Redskins section, just for a size idea.

  9. Yikes! Well, I'm going to hope that doesn't happen. I don't think I've been as sick as you at any point yet. I let the Advil wear off yesterday for awhile as a trial and it was very unpleasant but I never got above 99.8 and was still able to swallow liquids, albeit with a lot of willpower. But I will keep monitoring it. And the rash is good to know about, because I'm allergic to a bunch of antibiotics (which is why I'm on azithromycin and not amoxicillin) and the hives always start as small bumps on my forearms, so I'd probably have assumed that's what it was.

I still think I have a cold, though. I've also got a cough, a stuffy/runny nose, fluid in my ears, and a froggy voice, none of which match strep and all of which match a cold. The throat swab was unmistakably positive, so I definitely have strep, but there may also be a virus on top of it. In which case the antibiotics may not make me feel all the way better. But if the cold started on Thursday it should be clearing out soon. A hacking dry cough with strep throat really hurts.

Yeah sounds like either allergies or a cold on top of it. I never had congestion or stuffy or runny anything. It was a very different kind of being sick. I started out on the amoxicillin, luckily I'm not allergic, but it was like shooting a water gun at a house fire, and barely slowed it down. Hope you get better soon, it sucked SO much not being able to leave the couch when it was 85 degrees and sunny out :( Worst time of year to be sick.

  10. Oh, boy. How long was it before you knew there was a problem? I've been sick for four days. So far it seems pretty standard, reddish throat (not dramatically so) with some white bumps and low-grade fever. No rash, fever and throat pain mostly go away with Advil.

It hit me like a truck on Friday night, was almost instant, and I was light headed, no balance and had a fever of 102. The next day was taking Advil to keep the swelling down in my throat and help with the fever just like you are now. Sunday morning I still had the fever, but I was starting to feel human again except for a really sore throat, and still had no appetite. BRIGHT red throat, white patches on my tonsils, and red spots on the roof of my mouth. So the throat started getting bad day 3, started antibiotics the next day which took care of most of the pain, same day the rash started on my hands, they were like blisters, and then light rash up both arms on day 4. Day 6 the fever came back and it had spread to a bunch of my organs, that's when I got put in the hospital for 2 days and started the crazy meds then.

  11. Huh. Well, positive strep test. Good thing I went in. Hopefully the double z-pack takes care of it.

Watch out for a rash starting on your hands and spreading up. Remember my Scarlet Fever and complications from that for the past 2 weeks.

Hope it's not the same strain I had, it was ROUGH. Took 10 days of Levaquin (super-Cipro) AND some strong broad spectrum penicillin to finally get rid of it.

    Feel better kid!

  12. Oftentimes nurses end up having to correct the doctors, seeing as they actually see the patients and have to check behind to see if the doctor who gets paid 10 times as much screws up.

Yeah it was a little of both this time. It was such a rotating staff that I saw a ton of people, but my daytime nurse on Thursday WAS TERRIBLE. She asked if I needed pain meds (way after my time limit for them) and I told her I did, she laughed and said, no you don't and walked away. Luckily I had 2 Physician's Assistants that were in charge of this section I was in, one for the day and one for the night, and both of them were amazing doing the Dr.'s job and picking up some nurses slack when I had the crappy ones. Had some decent nurses in there a couple times, but the bad ones were BAD.

I'm alive, which is the important thing, but I'd go 4-5 hours without seeing a human sometimes, and then when I'd have the competent ones I'd have someone poke their head in at least once an hour or so.

  13. Had a rough weekend, FRI night got smacked with a bug, fever, chills, no appetite. SAT slept all day, finally could sit up straight about 5pm, still couldn't eat, throat getting a little sore. SUN, throat REALLY sore and swollen, fever broke, but coherent at least. So I go to the Dr. today worried that it's something contagious I might pass on to the girls...yeah. I have Scarlet Fever. SERIOUSLY???!!! Who the *** gets Scarlet Fever anymore? Is it even still a "thing?" Oh yes...yes it is, it's just strep with a painful rash.

    <sigh>

Thought that was the worst...infection spread and got hospitalized for 2.5 days. Home now, but some of the care at the hospital was just terrible. It's amazing how understaffed they are and how some of the "qualified" people hate their jobs. I saw some doctors that thought they knew better than everyone else because they took 40 seconds out of their busy day to see you, so they would change your whole diagnosis without reading your file. They also don't like it when you tell them they are wrong, especially when you PROVE them wrong and then they look like an asshole in front of other staff because they got all loud with you. That guy didn't show his face again for 2 days, but I got some applause from the rest of the staff for it. He much be a douche all the time.

  15. Supposedly the WWE put a video up that showed the Rock's promo, but the notes on his wrist were nowhere to be found. Pretty sure that part at least was not a work. Probably Rock being super busy, having less time to prepare than he should have, and just wanting to be sure he hit on the things he needed to.

I think he was just a touch off, while Cena was in the zone, and as I said in the last point, there's probably a good chance he just wasn't prepared. Hopefully WWE gets his focus for the next month and he'll be on top of his game next time. And, let me just say, Rock slightly off his game, is still better than nearly everyone else on their game.

And I don't think Rock would go for an angle where he looked like that during a promo. I think he would rather Cena physically harm him during a promo than look bad. That has always been his bread and butter, I just can't see him agreeing to that. Everything I've read has implied these guys have quite a bit of creative control over what they say, I think Rock was just at a bit of a loss when Cena was speaking, and certainly frustrated.

Maybe I'm buying into it and the little kid in me is coming out, but I think a lot of this with them is very real.

I think it's a VERY well designed work, with subtle things being "caught" by people and them looking like they are trying to cover it up. No way they would bring Rocky back for something like this and then just let Cena go off script on him. I think they are trying to make Rocky look all big time hollywood, so that they aren't LOCKED into Cena being a heel after mania when Rock is gone again. Both have signs of face and heel in their promos and storylines right now, so it could be a "face v face" showdown and they can go in different directions after the event. My guess is because they aren't sold that Rocky is coming back to do anything after Mania and they are giving themselves an out in the storyline so that the whole NWO fiasco doesn't happen again (when Hall and Xpac missed shows and last second just didn't show killing storylines).

  16. Stomach flu...go away and leave my family alone.

Ugh, we passed that around for a couple weeks. Both girls, the wife and I all got it one after the other. It was BRUTAL too. I thought we had caught the Norovirus for a while there (I had that back in 2004 when it broke out real bad at MD)

  17. Let me rant on a little bit more about my wife's position. We both got home yesterday evening and she told me she had spoken to her principal about varying her teaching for next year. She would like to start teaching health instead of just teaching science. Now before anyone says teaching health is just a way to not teach, my wife has a real passion for health. Like I said before she has an undergrad in Exercise and Sports Science and a masters in Health Education along with her other undergrad in Biology. She was a personal trainer for years while she was going to school and then an Exercise Physiologist at the Fitness Institute of IHC (a regional HMO) for 6 years prior to beginning her teaching career. Not to mention the fact that you could bounce a quarter on her abs and that's after having 3 kids and being in her mid '30s (yes I'm bragging). So she is beyond qualified to teach Health in Jr. High or Middle School or whatever you guys call it. The response she got from her principal; "Sorry but Mrs. X has her teaching endorsement for Health and has been teaching here for 6 years longer than you so she'll be teaching it next year." I understand that there rightfully should be advantages given to workers that have been loyal and done well, but this is just stupid to me.

Ehhhh, I see these issues almost every day (my wife is a Middle School AP, and she's been doing the Master Schedule for 4 years) and I can KINDA see the other side. The problem is the position she wants. There is pretty much universally just one Health teacher (and in most cases they have to teach other classes as well) because it's a 1/4 elective. Because not every student has to take it every year and it's in a rotation with other classes there is only room for one teacher to teach it. Even if your wife is as or more qualified than this other teacher to teach it, you can't just bump a teacher out of a position for another teacher generally. Not sure how it is out there, but I know around here they are guaranteed their jobs after year 3 (aside from a lengthy firing process) so she couldn't just be bumped out the door, and she is more than likely not qualified to teach something else.

From my side of things (I'm in upper level HR) the move could in theory be done, but only under a couple scenarios. A) There would have to be another teaching position open where the current health teacher could be moved to, you can't just get rid of a teacher because someone else wants to teach what she is teaching. B) The other teacher would have to be qualified to teach that other subject. Basically (and I see this one happen all the time) if we are talking about teachers that are qualified to teach Reading and English (separate subjects here), the qualifications are the same for both jobs, so you can move them around at will. If your wife wanted to teach English instead of Reading one year, it'd be up to that department head, but they could move her into it no problem and move an English teacher into Reading. Going from Science to Health is much harder because you are crossing into other departments, and from a class with a much higher enrollment to a lower enrollment.

Sorry to encroach on your rant, just trying to make sense of why they would say that. Part employment law, part teaching logistics. These are the kinds of conversations that my wife and I get into all the time because the HR department in their school system is about worthless. Where in the private sector you can bring in someone more qualified and replace someone anytime you want, teaching is a whole different world when it comes to employment, as it should be, since it's the only profession in the country where their employer allows them to be harassed constantly, they consistently have their contracts ignored, and in some cases their job security is completely dependent on children and their parents and is totally out of their own control.

  18. I go back and forth about who I think wins the Rock/Cena match.

I heard that The Rock is supposed to also wrestle at Summerslam and that he will be on Raw the night after Mania.

That leads me to believe that Cena wins at WM and turns heel....Rematch of Cena/Rock at SS, which The Rock wins.

Wouldn't count on that. He's filming a movie right now, which I'm guessing will wrap before WM. Then he's got 3-4 other movies ALREADY in pre-production and getting ready to film this year. Just don't see him making the commitment to doing anything else with WWE for a while after this, and for him it was an extra PR push and favor for Vince leading into his more action-oriented move stretch he's got coming.

  19. Orton apparently out with a concussion now. That dude can't stay healthy, unless its a work. The Chamber Match for the Smackdown side will now look like this...

Bryan vs Barrett vs Rhodes vs Big Show vs Khali vs Santino.

WTF? I guess on the bright side, Bryan will go to Mania as the Champ, something I never would have believed when he was losing every match to every jobber all year long in 2011.

I think that was part of making him "earn his stripes". Stick them in a going nowhere hole like that and see which guys take it and work hard and which guys pout and whine.

  20. I'm ignoring the Orioles Talk forum until the start of spring training.

Luckily there's some interesting discussions elsewhere on this board.

That's funny, I work the other way around, I only really post in the Talk section in the offseason and avoid it during the season.

  21. Dude, this is one of the greatest things in life. A WINTER day where it cracks 60, and you just hang out on the deck with a cold beer (or a few dozen) and some stogies. I love it and do the same thing when I can. This is what life is all about man!!!!

Enjoy it now...Farmer's Almanac has been calling for a good sized snow storm around the 20th, a nor-easter. I figure it's our one shot at snow this year. I'd KINDA like to see it happen, just once, cause I think the kids should get at least one chance to play in the snow every year. I hated growing up when we wouldn't have any measurable snow for like 3-4 years and then get hammered one year.

  22. My guess is just as HHH is ready to fire John L, Taker's music will come on, he will come out and all of the John L stuff will go away as if it never happened.

I'm thinking Kane keeps torturing Cena and Ryder and Taker comes out to save the day...then they can have Cena turn complete heel by costing Taker his perfect record at WM and complaining he didn't need anyone to save his day. Then you do the Cena/Rock match AFTER that and it'll be boos for days.
