  1. I have a bad feeling that the Yankees are going to end up with Cease . I get the sense the white Sox want some young controllable pitching and they could easily give up Clarke Schmidt along with other prospects  maybe not quite as good as the orioles but in the top 100. I sincerely hope I am wrong

True but they haven’t replaced Gibson yet. We have 3 reliable starters Rodriquez, Bradish , and Kremer. Means came back and had to be shut down at the playoffs. Hall and Wells are relievers. Hall couldn’t get through 5 regularly in the minors due to high pitch counts and gave up runs that I’m assuming was on his secondary stuff. Wells has ran out of gas after 100 innings 2 straight year.  I don’t know what to say about Irvin but I’m not convinced he will be as good as Gibson.

Yes they need someone to cover Kyle Gibsons innings. I think John Means should be fine but you have to cover the what ifs. If I was Mike Elias and money was no object I would have signed Jordan Montgomery yesterday . I think he’s exactly what we need on the field and in the clubhouse . We’d keep our prospects for an aggressive July deadline deal.

  3. We could have  had sonny gray at 3 years at 75mm but like always we wait for the market to set before striking . Just once I’d like to see us make a bold move early.  This year would have been the year . We know what we need . Make the move early . Instead we wait and will probably have to overpay for Michael Lorenzen.

  4. Start Lowther at triple A . I want Os management to do this right unlike the Calvary. If he’s dominating there then bring him up but I am not about rushing prospects anymore if we are banking on these guys . Same with Rustchman. I wouldn’t be upset if he DOES NOT make his debut this year .

My guess is that Elias would rather let most of our younger guys who haven’t pitched AAA yet get their feet wet there and get called up as the season progresses, rather than force feeding them into the OD rotation.     But he doesn’t want them blocked, either.  That leaves room the Wade LeBlancs of the world to get us through the first month or two of the season.

True but   it what happens if Kramer and akin struggle and have to be sent to the bullpen or to Triple A or if they get injured . I want some kind of quality depth to cover for these types of things. Wade Leblanc is a starting pitcher and while he is an option he does not give me confidence as a legit option to take the ball every fifth day , especially coming off an injury. I see him more as a swing man rotation / bullpen guy. We need more than that before the season starts . Otherwise you may have Means and a bunch of guys trying to get their feet wet at the major league level in the toughest division in baseball that may or may not struggle. One or two of these are ok . You can’t have a rotation full of them .As Showalter used to say - you have to address your what ifs and we need to assume those guys aren’t going to come in and be legit right off the bat.

But what trade?  You can't say there is no downside without knowing what we have to give up.

Well I would have to figure we’d give up a player at a position that we have some depth in. That would probably be outfield . That may be Santander . Don’t think I would trade him straight up for Cronenworth but maybe a package containing Cronenworth - I am not sure . But this acquisition would be something we sorely need and have needed - A potential middle infielder who could fill time in the infield and  the outfield . He finished 2nd in ROY voting and yeah you could point to his sept numbers and say they weren’t very good and that he had one good month . I also looked at his walk verses k rate and it was 8bb/13k . That’s a very good percentage so he 1 ) he has a good idea of the strike zone and 2 ) can still make an impact in the lineup.  I’d put him at short and at second in ST and he what he could do. I think he could be an everyday player at a position of need . I just think he needs an opportunity.

The bolded is what I've been saying too. Nobody knows him like SD, yet they keep signing guys instead of assuming he has a spot. Doesn't scream out loud that he's a great player.

Or they signed Profar to build depth at a position so they can trade for something that they need . Worst case scenario he’s a useful utility player . Best case scenario he’s your multi positional player and lead off hitter for a few years . I see no downside to this trade .

  8. Or two years with an option . I have to preface this with saying I don’t know a whole lot about Andrelton Simmons other than he plays gold glove hall of fame caliber defense and I know we have some middle infielders coming up but this is why I do it

    - those that are playing SS right now in the system are at least a couple of years away.

    - there is no guarantee that those prospects that could play shortstop in mlb will be able to in mlb - Henderson , west burg and Vavra are all bigger guys and could necessitate a move to another position

    - we have a lot of pitchers coming up- young pitchers that will need a solid defense up the middle - what better way to shore that up with a gold glove winner at 2nd (Sanchez ) and short .

    - as much as the shift in instituted now we need someone athletic enough to be able to adapt and cover ground there - not a Ruiz , not an Alberto, not a Villar .someone that’s sound . - for our pitchers and the defense

if it’s between us and another team I say we bite the bullet for the reasons above and spend on this one . There is another really good class of shortstop free agents next year and we won’t likely spend on those because those will likely be  more expensive . I think you go in this year even though we are rebuilding - but I think this helps out the rebuild .  Otherwise just sign Villar and be done with it . NO to GALVIS

I want a shortstop with solid overall production.  It doesn't matter what shape that takes.  I'd rather have someone with an okay glove and an .800 OPS than a very good glove and a .650.

And someone who could lead off and play other positions would be ideal . Cronenworth would fill both needs . It would also be nice to have someone be able to play third if Ruiz is ineffective  again

I'd take him and would be willing to give up Diaz for him as well, but he's most likely a 2B, not a SS. His offensive statcast percentile rankings are crazy good, but he did struggle a bit over his last month.

Here's a good take on him:

    https://www.eastvillagetimes.com/padres-jake-cronenworth-positives-negatives-outlook/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=padres-jake-cronenworth-positives-negatives-outlook

This is good - I do wonder if he just was stuck at short instead of playing all over if his numbers at short would be better . Seems like sort of a small sample size and  he came up a shortstop so I’d think he’d have the arm strength . I am just trying to find cheap versatile infielders that wouldn’t be an automatic out at the plate . I just don’t want galvis .

  11. To  1) see if Jake Cronenworth is available and 2) if he is what would they want in return . I trade them Austin Hays or Diaz  and a SP

Cronenworth becomes starter at short for now and lead off hitter . Mountcastle plays left field , Mullins in center , Santander in right field . When Diaz is ready you move Mountcastle to first base , Mancini to dh When Henderson / west burg are ready you move Cronenworth to whatever position you need covered - he plays infield and corner outfield slots .thoughts?

Been thinking about this.  Unless someone absolutely falls into our lap for rock bottom prices, I don't really see Elias making any moves for pitching or SS.  Nothing really has to be forced.  We have enough depth to move forward into 2021 without a single transaction.  This is Elias 3rd year; he wants/needs to evaluate more young talent at the MLB level before figuring out how and when to move the team into competition. We are starting to accumulate a lot of AA/AAA prospects so its time to see what we have before starting to pursue free agents again.

For starting pitching we have enough depth with Means, Cobb, Akin, Kremer, and Lopez.  After them Zimmerman, Baumann, Lowther, Wells, Smith, Bradish, the Rule V guys, Goudeau, and we haven't even started talking about GrayRod or Hall yet. There is also lot at the A/AA level that may be able to jump into a spot by August if they show the growth.

For SS, I think the real sleeper here is Ramon Urias. He's still on the 40 man and, granted, it was 25 ABs, but Ramon smashed for the O's last year.  If you go to his Baseball Reference page, you will see that in 2013 he was sold to the Mexican League by the Ranger,s at age 18 and since then, Ramon has never really struggled.  He destroyed the Mexican League with a life time OPS of .898 and an Avg of .323. in 1300+ Plate Appearances. He hit well in the Mexican Winter League with a .296/.388/ .813 line in just under 1000 PA's.  He joined St. Louis' system in 2018, OPSing .996 in 44 games at AA, 194 PA's.  He was then moved to AAA and over the rest of 2018 and 2019, Ramon slashed .262/ .347/ .773 in 142 games, 524 PA's.  He will start the season at 26 years of age.  Elias might have found a hidden gem here.

Beyond Urias, I think we need to see what Richie Martin and Mason McCoy can handle at the big league level. They will both be 26 at the start of the season.  I think those 3 with a spell from Sanchez or Valaika will get us through 2021.  Rylan Bannon will also be 25 this season and will need to be in the 2B/3B mix.  I count about 6 players right there that can get reps in the middle infield.  There is also a lot of A/AA depth starting to build, so you never know which one of those prospects may take a jump and be ready by July or August.

Exactly infield depth is coming - that’s why I would be targeting those players that are versatile and have some offensive upside - the Robertson’s , the Cronenworths . Players that can play multiple positions including outfield if possible . In terms of position player personnel those that have a little bit of a track record at the mlb level .Thats what I am targeting if I am Elias . If Urias can play shortstop at the mlb level, awesome - shift a Cronenworth or a Robertson to another position .
