Giving Villar $10M dollars would have been like putting expensive rims and a high end stereo system in a '92 Hyundai Excel. Whether you like the return or not this was the right decision and a terrible one for the Marlins, who seem to have zero direction under Jeter.

My ‘89 Excel came with a factory installed Blaupunkt stereo .

It was stolen within 6 months

    No....

.....and it is one of the most depressing / infuriating / frustrating things about the last two years. The guy is a millstone around the neck of the franchise. Mancini should be playing first. Anyone could see the rebuild coming, knew it would be difficult, but looked forward to seeing the emerging players. Some will flame out, some will flicker with hope, and some (Means seems to be the first) will exceed expectations. But C F'ing Davis watching belt high 91 mph sinkers for strike three with that deer in the headlights walk back to the dugout look.....   ugh. That I wish we could be spared.

    Thank you for using Millstone

I think what I’d say is that in 1940 “the major leagues” and “baseball” were not as synonymous as they are today.     I mean, there was nothing stopping someone from forming a league including the cities and geographies you listed that had no major league team, and then paying enough to attract the best talent.    So I don’t blame the existing major leagues for standing pat, but I do wonder why nobody else made a serious effort to fill the void.

Nothing except the reserve clause. In the ‘40s players that jumped to the Mexican League received lifetime bans.

And when you start to call the players only by their first names, and the other team as the bad guys or the enemy... only the White Sox will hire you.

Jason Benitti is really good. The White Sox got a true pro when they hired him.

I do get that but I just have watched enough games where we did the split team with their team not to be impressed by Carpenter and Santangelo as announcers.

Probably because they’re terrible. The Orioles have always had good if not great broadcasters, Ernie Harwell,Chuck Thompson,Jon Miller and Gary Thorne not a stinker in the group.

    did not know, thank you.

I should add that teams can use alternate transportation if their destination is within a set number of miles. I don’t know the exact number but the O’s are allowed a shuttle bus to play in DC or Philly and maybe even New York

does the CBA tell the clubs at what level they have to  provide, as not all travel and hotel are the same.

First class air fare, 4 star hotels.

For me, does the team travel well, or do they nickel and dime the guys, cheap hotels, etc. For those in the know, like Tony-OH, they say thats not the case.

Travel and hotel accommodations are part of the CBA.

Yes, and you may be right.    Of course, in SoCal there was no team within 1,000 miles at the time.    Things may have been a little different in Baltimore with two major league teams within 100 miles or so, and a third major league team that had been relocated from Baltimore many years before.

Distance certainly was a factor but my dad remembers the Cardinals broadcasting into LA. I imagine the answer lies in whether Baltimore was part of the Phillies or Senators broadcast network.

I was aware of the minor league Orioles, which is why I titled the thread “what MLB team did Baltimore fans root for before 1954?”      I assume most fans in cities with minor league teams still had their favorite major league teams.   Of course, the minor leagues had a much more independent identity in 1953 than they do today.    But even so, they were still the minors.

My point was they didn’t root for any MLB team to any measurable degree.

How many people do you know who aren't from DC who used to be real O's fans who have abandoned the team for the Nats?  The only ones I know are old guys who grew up around DC and used to root for the Senators.

This is my experience as well. I lived in DC for 47 years and the main reasons I had for not attending Orioles games were dissatisfaction with ownership and traffic. Originally in that order but the past 10 years traffic became a major obstacle.

I live on the eastern shore now and love the direction of the team and will start attending games once again. Some of us really enjoy the rebuild process.
