    Somewhere, Brooks is smiling today...

There is a lot of feeling of transition today, between those that are gone and those that have arrived.  Not to mention the fresh team Elias has constructed.

You decide and feel free to give reasons.   For this exercise please don’t say neither.

    1. Kjerstad or Cowser

    2. Westburg or Ortiz

    3. McDermott or Povich

    4. Hays or Santander

    5. Mayo or Basallo

    6. Mateo or Urias

Kjerstad looks significantly better at the plate and Cowser was way more inconsistent on defense than I anticipated.

Westburg also looked better at the plate and appears to be a top-level defender at 2B, which is where I'd leave him most of the time.  I'm for the Henderson-Holliday-Westburg infield.  3B/SS, SS/2B and 2B/3B.

McDermott has the better chance I think of being an impact relief pitcher.  I prefer neither in my rotation plans; I'm imagining these pieces are traded for just that, front line pitching.

Really would like to keep Santander's bat but Hays appeared to learn LF as the season progressed and having someone that can play the new Camden Yards LF well is a harder thing to find, I believe.  Hays may also be cheaper.

Everything points to Mayo having rare power.  Rarer than Kjerstad.  Rutschman is the reason why I take him over Basallo but that requires the team to keep Adley long term, which is what I'd do.

People will probably not like my choice of Mateo but he like Mayo has an elite trait and Urias does not.

So, left hand side all the way down.  Nice exercise.  🙂

The governor’s office sent out its own release today clarifying that it’s a “memorandum of understanding” rather than an actual lease, which will be finalized after more details are worked out. But it will “keep the Orioles in Baltimore for at least 30 years,” along with modernizing facility operations and boosting private sector development to revitalize downtown Baltimore City “and create more opportunity for all.”

I have never heard of a "memorandum of understanding" before.  Anyone else?

As long as it's legally binding I don't care what it's called though.

The 1980 Orioles were one of just nine teams to win 100 and not play in the postseason. This list is misleading, as it says there were 13 teams, but the 1800s teams listed didn't have a post-season to go to and the 1904 Giants didn't play in the post-season because John McGraw was in a feud with AL President Ban Johnson and refused to play.

In the lifetimes of anyone still alive there have only been five 100-win teams that missed the playoffs. And with expanded playoffs it's highly unlikely it'll happen again in any of our lifetimes.

Thank goodness - that is just wrong, winning 100 games and missing the playoffs.  At least it ended on a good note (Yanks losing to KC).  Wonder what the Orioles could've done?

  5. This has now attained legendary status because of Adley Rutschman.

The Orioles were swept by Detroit May 13-15, 2022.

They were almost swept by New York May 16-19 but won the last game.

Adley is called up May 21.

    Have not been swept since.

    It's incredible.

  6. I still hate tanking, and this is the time to say it because there's no crutch to lean on for me.

But considering they lost 115 freaking games before the "tank" started I'm not sure if it's a suitable label, rather than just an old-fashioned rebuild.  That 2018 team still had Jones, Machado, Mancini, Schoop, Bundy, Gausman, Brach, Davis and Trumbo for most of the year.  And Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner.  115 games!!

After the rebuild started in earnest they were only bad for three seasons, and I don't think they were intentionally losing games, they were just a skeleton team.  It was the right thing to do.  It had to be done.  The only doubt in my mind was whether they would do it well or have a bad "rebuild" lasting a decade or more.  They certainly did it well.

    Miguel Tejada

Okay, technically no Oriole has ever worn #0.  But I had to include this photo of shortstop Miguel Tejada (see #10) from April 10, 2005.  Miggy slid head-first into home plate at Yankee Stadium, and when he got back to his feet, the "1" on the front of his jersey had started to peel off.  He bit the bullet and played the rest of the game wearing only "0" on the front.

    What a factoid!

Why is tomorrow’s game have so many open seats.  Orioles need to do a massive marketing campaign to get people to come.  Discount upper deck to a flat rate.  Something.  Seems silly they don’t make an effort knowing it’s a Thursday game.

Mr. Angelos said we need to massively hike prices up to compete remember? 😒

He was the greatest human being I ever knew in sports.

And he was my very close friend for 53 years.

    Brooks Robinson just died.

    I'm devastated.

Baseball lost, not just the greatest defensive third baseman of all time...it lost one of the greatest men in the game. A man who served the game not just with his stellar play...but in the way he carried himself.

I'm going to share many stories about my friend who I first met when I was 15 years old, as the batboy for the Orioles in Miami.

But first, I'd like to include a clip, of me in perhaps the greatest single honor I ever had in my public life...Brooks asked ME to dedicate his statue at Oriole Park. This clip, remains very, very special to me.

It was a public moment in stating my love and admiration for my childhood hero.

This moment happened almost exactly 11 years ago....to the day.

I'm terribly sad right now...but I got to say, in public what I felt about the greatest human being I ever met in sports...and probably anywhere else in life...too.

For what it's worth Roy - other than my father - you're the one that taught me about Brooks Robinson.  I was not part of that generation of fans, and I've never had the privilege of meeting Brooks, so I have to rely on others.  A lot of us are in that boat.  So, thank you.

  10. CBS Sports cited an Associated Press reporter in their story:

    Quote

So beloved was Robinson that an Associated Press columnist once wrote: "Brooks never asked anyone to name a candy bar after him. In Baltimore, they name their children after him."

This has me thinking - first, any of the older board members remember who wrote this?  And also, I wonder just how many kids in and around Baltimore in the 1970s were named Brooks?

  11. James McCann learning to hit again has quietly made this team a lot better, as it means more days Adley can slide over to DH or even get the day off.  It's not the only reason; nonetheless, look at how their run differential per game has improved.
