Kjerstad is postseason eligible by replacing Vavra. For Mayo to be postseason eligible for replacing Mountcastle, Mountcastle would need to spend 10 days on IL before the postseason. So they could conceivably wait until the HOU series to make a call on whether Mountcastle needs to go on IL.

That's great news that he's postseason eligible.

I mean I like McKenna and he provided some fun plays on defense recently but Kjerstad's bat is a major upgrade.  So long as Mullins and Hicks are healthy.

  2. Snapshot as of today, 9/7 before the Sox game:

    OPS (OPS+) Player

    834 (128) O'Hearn

    826 (125) Santander

    802 (119) Henderson

    800 (119) Mountcastle

    799 (119) Hays

    788 (119) Rutschman

    781 (117) Hicks

    766 (110) Mullins

It's fluctuated from week to week but it's been like this most of the season. Those are their top eight hitters so close together.  Is this just a coincidence or is there an underlying reason from a development standpoint?

Also a question for the statisticians - would this even distribution be a factor in the team overachieving?  They are 7th in the AL in OPS, 6th in slugging, 8th in OBP, 9th in BB, 10th in HR... and yet they are 4th in runs scored while 11th in team AB.

The answers could very well be nothing but noise; I just want to toss the subject out there for discussion.

Why just the Browns and Cardinals? I don't get it. The Lyrics are "I been waitin all day for Sunday Night" sang to the tune of "I Hate Myself For Lovin You."

It's a joke.  Browns and Cardinals fans have suffered a long time so they should get the original lyrics.  Maybe throw in the Lions too.

And now, having explained it, the joke is dead.  Press F to pay respects.

NFL might have exclusivity to that song, based on the Sunday Night Football intro. Granted, the lyrics have been changed and Carry Underwood/Faith Hill have been singing it. Still the same song otherwise though.

They should only play that for teams like the Browns and Cardinals

They should be playing one of Joan Jett's major hit songs for as long as she's been an Orioles fan and supporter of the franchise.

I nominate "I Hate Myself For Loving You".

  6. Mountcastle and McCann getting going has been a big boost to this team.  They've been operating above Pythagorean all season, but in the month of August they're sitting at +33 runs with seven games to play.  This is going to be the most interesting September in a long time.

  7. I wasn't sure whether or not to start a new thread on the Rays so it's good to find this one.  The Rays are going through quite a bit of adversity all of a sudden.  They've been 15-21 since July 1st.

Like FlaosFan says, McClanahan is done.  He's been out for a while, but now they know they can't rely on him for the playoff race.  Their rotation does still include Tyler Glasnow, Zach Eflin and Aaron Civale, but they've had to rely on "openers" like Shawn Armstrong and Jalen Beeks to fill it out.

Then we have the Wander Franco situation.  Now that the subject matter has been leaked... even if he is innocent of any charges coming his way, this would be a stain on his reputation/career.  If not, he's going to prison.  And it has the potential to be a huge distraction.  Not to mention, they've lost their All Star shortstop who was OPSing 819 with stellar defense.  He was second in the AL in rWAR (behind Ohtani of course) and fourth in fWAR.  So they've brought in brand new rookie Osleivis Basabe.

Basabe’s hitting took a step up during his 2022 minor league campaign at the high-A and Double-A levels, which earned him his first trip to Triple-A in 2023.  His season at Durham has resulted in a .297/.350/.427 slash line and four homers over 424 plate appearances, with 16 steals as well as 24 doubles and seven triples.  This performance has boosted his prospect stock, as MLB Pipeline (6th) and Baseball America (7th) each rank Basabe within the top seven minor leaguers in the deep Rays farm system.

Nice prospect, but it's still a huge downgrade.

Now all that said, they beat the pants off the Giants 10-2 yesterday and the Orioles are currently losing by 7 runs, so nothing can be taken by granted.  It's just that the road is looking rougher for them.

It's all Kevin Brown's fault, if only he were a good boy, we wouldn't be looking at fighting for a wild card spot two weeks from now!

We could turn this into a "blame Kevin Brown for everything" meme, he might get a kick out of that

Rain on game day?  Kevin's fault

The optimistic response to this is that plenty of teams have won on the field despite complete incompetence and buffoonery in the owner's box. The Reds won a World Series and Marge Schott was a Nazi sympathizing trainwreck. The A's won three straight titles with Charlie O. Finley as the owner. Talent is talent.

Oh man Marge Schott and her Saint Bernard... what a character

They’re more concerned about who leaked it than righting the wrong. There was s no help possible for them. They are beyond saving.

Reminds me of a certain non-US country... can't say which w/o the politics hammer but I think y'all know which one

Yes, correct.  Looking forward to the Astros game tonight.

    I agree with you 100%.

For the longest time, I thought Dan Snyder was going to be the Skins owner for most of the rest of my life.  And I was just determined to outlast him.  Just flat out, outlast him.  To your point about being an Orioles fan before this current ownership and being a fan after them...I felt the same way about the Skins.  I feel the same way about the Orioles.

It took a monumental effort to get Snyder out of DC but it happened.  Of course a lot of it was due to legal pressure, but it still happened.

I don't know what it'll take for the Angelos family to sell the team.  I believe they understand they're not liked...and if they didn't know before yesterday, they certainly know now.

But just like Snyder, I suspect that not being liked isn't enough for the Angelos family to let go of the team.  I don't know if there's anything legal in JA's closet that could make him to be forced to sell the team if it came to light, but I hope so.  I think, right now, that's the only way.

Until then, I'm just here to outlast him.

I like to say that when Snyder was caught stealing money from the other owners, that's when he really got in trouble.  🤑

And this is why I care about the @wildcard thread.

We can't take anything for granted with the Angelos family. They can ruin a wet dream.

Great, now the next time I have a wet dream it'll be interrupted by the Angelos family staring at me
