Just saying.

Down 1 in 6th inning, after a leadoff double.
A ball to the right side of the field probably advances the runner to 3rd.
You pinch hit to avoid LH vs LH matchup, but set up obvious RH vs RH matchup for this inning and next time through the lineup, because opponent has not more lefties in the pen.
RH batter obviously fails to do his job (because this team usually does fail to do their job) and hits it to the left side of the field. Runner stays put at 2nd.
What is Hyde's success rate with pinch hitters since he patted himself on the back for such great pinch hit numbers?
That’s no overstatement. The Orioles pinch hitters are hitting .322 this year, best in the MLB, with Arizona a distant second at .272 (the Yankees are hitting .159).

People are so carefree about a willingness to include Holliday as a trade piece because he’s sub-Mendoza Line in his age 20 year, but that will change sooner if not later.

So...thoughts on his defense at 1B after a couple of games there in the majors?
Not a lot to go on. He got some simple grounders that he handled but the real test will be when Gunnar short-hops him while throwing on the run. I don’t have a lot of confidence in his glove so far, though.

A couple of his hits were bloopers, but the homer he hit was a positive sign. Him turning things around could be a big boost to the club right when they need it.

Kjerstad is getting called up? All our problems are solved!
I know it’s a joke but I’m dying to get a few decent bats back in the line-up. Batting Rutschman fourth seemed like a really bad idea, but when you look at the four through nine hitters there aren’t really any better options right now.

For some reason hearing that Manny already has 3,300 PAs with the Padres just made me feel even older.

"The catcher apparently told teammates that he wanted the season to be finished, according to ESPN."
So he's related to Colby Rasmus? But seriously, if you want the year to be over, wouldn't letting the other team know what's coming just prolong the game and thus the season? What a jackalope.

If Adley is hurt why aren't they putting him on the IL?
Wouldn't putting him on the IL with the goal of getting better performance in the playoffs be the smart move?
There's a difference between being actively injured and the aftereffects of an injury compromising your abilities. I just see that Adley has been sapped of his power since right around a specific date and incident (.480 SLG before, .268 SLG since). He may feel well enough to suit up nearly every day, but it doesn't mean he's not dealing with some lingering issues. All speculation, of course, but anytime suddenly "forgets how to hit" I'll put my money on Occam and his shaving accessory.

I know. It was about 31% sarcasm on my part. I’m tired of seeing the injuries as the reason. Can someone just come up with something else? Injuries aren’t the reason Adley is the new Crush. Or that Cowser has the situational hitting of Rob Deer. Or that Burnes has fell off. Or that Holliday and Mayo are strikeout machines. Just looking for some analysis on the details instead of trying to gloss over everything with the generic injuries excuse.
1) I believe injuries are Adley’s problem.
2) Because Cowser and Deer have essentially the same strikeout rate? Deer was ridiculed for whiffing 31% of his career ABs, Cowser is at 29.7%. And Deer walked more often. The whole game is full of Rob Deers now.
3) Burnes has been volatile. His career ERA in July is under 2.50 — in August it’s over 4.00. (Fortunately, it’s better in September)
I know you’re tired of hearing about injuries. I’m just tired of injuries. By comparison last year’s team was very, very fortunate.

Adley got hit on the right hand June 27th, missed a game on June 28th with swelling in the hand, and hasn’t been the same since.
Even during those last 188 ABs, he’s got 27 walks to 28 K’s, so it’s not like he’s not seeing the ball or overmatched, his power and hard contact has just been complete sapped. And then I think the back issues came on top of all that. I don’t think he’s lost the ability to be a really good hitter… I’m just not convinced he’ll be right again this year. It’s not proven we can win consistently without “good Adley” either. As he went south, so did the team.- 1

Sorry to get negative on a day when we won 13-3, but man am I sick of watching Cowser fail to get runners home with a runner on 3B and less than two out. He did that twice in the early innings, and he’s only gotten the runner home 8 times out of 30 this season (26.7%). Of the 92 players who’ve had 25+ opportunities, Cowser is dead last in that category. Major league average is 51.0%, and Cowser is basically at half that. The O’s as a team were at 129 of 263 going into today, which is 5 successful at bats less than league average. Cowser is -7 all by himself.
He’s not the only one who failed in that situation today, but he’s the one who does it repeatedly. His approach in those situations is really poor.
That was an aggravating couple innings.
1st inning, runners 2nd and 3rd, no outs, down a run, Santander and Cowser strike out, and Mullins does a Mullins (infield fly).
3rd inning, runners 1st and 3rd, no outs, tied at 2, and Cowser and Mullins both go down flailing. Fortunately Slater bailed them out with a 2-out double.
Those situations often cost you the game, so they're very fortunate it didn't yesterday. -
I just hope facing some underwhelming pitching helps the O’s bats regain some confidence that they then ride out for the rest of the month.

I kind of slept on this album but it's a solid Mastodon record. This closing track really grabbed me, especially the transition halfway through.

I seem to remember all those guys we got at the tail end of their careers. Ron Kittle, Lonnie Smith, Harold Reynolds, Sid Fernandez, Roger McDowell... woof.

Does anybody know how long Elias is under contract for us currently?
I don't think the FO has ever made that sort of information public. Elias ducked the question when asked in early 2023 and only said, "People are, for better or worse, going to have to get used to [Brandon Hyde] and I here for a while."

That’s the best part about it. I say we should get Roberts in there, make it a 4 man booth and see if that makes it even better.
I sense if you had your way it would be an 11-man booth with Brach, Dave Johnson, Devereaux, Bordick and whoever else could help minimize KB's mic time.
To be fair, at the end of a recent game against Cleveland that we won 9-5, KB signed off saying that it was a game "enough to drive you crazy if you let it", and it wasn't until a half-hour later I realized he was quoting the Dolly Parton song and I did an involuntary eye roll. -
Bowman then Perez coming in after Irvin and retiring all 9 Dodgers they faced, that was impressive.
-
Personally I wish the 3-man booth was a permanent thing.

Hasn't been the same since that foul ball off the hand in July.......Now the back issue.
The foul ball has to be the prime culprit, compounded by the back. He didn't just forget how to hit.
Before getting hit on the hand June 27th and missing a game, he was hitting .300/.351/.480 OPS .830, 27 XBH.
Since that happened, his line is .182/.279/.291, .570 OPS, 9 XBH. -

Crowley’s comments came out of nowhere & really had no place within the context of his talk & the hall of fame event itself. There was no reason for him to say what he did. He said he did not like Elias; that Elias snuck out of Houston as all of the sign-stealing scandal came down, etc.
As the saying goes “sometimes the greatest way to say something is to say nothing at all.”
That’s… unfortunate. C’mon, Terry, read the room.

I’ve always enjoyed it when posters on message boards hold GMs/managers/players “accountable.”
I wrote an “open letter” to Peter Angelos once imploring him to sell the team. Not even thirty years later, he acquiesced. You’re all welcome. Star strong. Eventually this whole nightmare of a Rubenstein/Elias/Hyde era will be over!

Runs per game for this year's club, by month:
March/April - 5.41
May - 4.53
June - 5.62
July - 4.60
August - 4.70
So yes, we're down a bit in August from the earlier output of April and June, but better than a couple other months. And for the "feast or famine" aspect, in wins this year we are averaging 6.49 runs per game, 3 runs per game in losses. And those numbers are better than last year's club (which was 6.30 RPG in wins, 2.78 RPG in losses).
So if we score 2 to 3 runs, we likely lose, which I think comes as a shock to nobody.

We have several guys with excellent sprint speed (like Cowser) who don’t seem to be particularly gifted base stealers. Which is fine. I’m also pretty sure Gunnar could steal more but he doesn’t seem all that interested (or confident) or else I’m sure he would have made a run at 30/30 and beyond.
I would rather guys pick their spots than start getting thrown out more. Caught stealing is the worst because you not only give up an out, you lose a base runner in the process.
