Yeah, I don't buy into this argument.  They're starting off the year with one hell of a stretch against the entire division, and they've either won or split every series so far.  A sweep is great, doesn't matter who it's against, but if you don't win the series you were never in position to sweep it in the first place.  As has been the case every year they haven't made the playoffs since 2012, if this team doesn't make the playoffs this year it'll be because of what they didn't do in August and September, when it really matters.

There seems to be a few misguided posters who either think the O's take it easy after winning the first two games of a series... or have fallen prey to some "curse" that prevents sweeps. I say this because I've seen numerous folks complaining about it already this year.

A sweep isn't easy. Just because you won the first two games doesn't make the third game any easier. You're still facing a competitive MLB opponent.

Perspective of a secondary pirate fan:  I am a pirate fan through marriage, I actively root for them, and my wife and I fight over which game is on any given night.

I am really disappointed about Marte, and in truth really disappointed for him.  He has become a truly dynamic player, and I think his PED use is more about the weight of expectations than anything else.

Its not about a contract.  Marte has a contract.  It's team friendly but it pays him quite a bit and it runs through 2021.

When Pittsburgh announced that it would move it's cornerstone player, Andrew McCutchen, from center field to make room for Marte, it didn't go unnoticed by the fans, the Pittsburgh media, or I am sure the players on the team.  It was a passing of the baton on some ways.  It was noticeable in off-season reports, spring training and the early season that Marte was making a bigger effort to be a leader on the team.  After a particularly solid game this year the field reported grabbed Marte and interviewed him.  Me and my wife looked at each other and said "have you ever seen him interviewed?"  They mentioned on the telecast that it was his first ever interview without an interpreter in his career and that he had been making a bigger effort to learn English this past off season.  The interview seemed genuine, not filled with normal cliches, and you could get a sense that he was trying to be more of a leader.

I don't k ow what lead him to use PEDs, or why, but in trying to see the better of the situation I really believe he got caught up on expectations.

As a side note, I also wonder what effect if any the WBC had on this.  Marte played for the DR, where nationalist pride in the game a the culture is very different as some have pointed out.  It also has visibly taken an effect on some players as it requires a higher sustained level of effort which could lead to the use of PEDs as a pick me up.

I doubt anyone started doping up just because of the extra effort of a few WBC games.

Truth it, there are probably a lot of guys in the league that still used substances that are banned/frowned upon. There are ways to hide it. These ways are also not 100% foolproof (it's a human error factor, really - guys make mistakes on their regimens), hence players occasionally getting caught.

For as long as human beings have competed in sporting events, they've looked for ways to cut corners and get the edge on opponents. They really doubled down on it when being an athlete became such a lucrative career. It's just human nature.

This thread works better anyways. From a random post on the front page...

Reminded me of "low rent rendezvous." Haven't thought of this in years. Thanks Flip!

This is a joke right?  You've never heard fans cheer an opposing player being removed on a stretcher?

Unfortunately it isn't that rare an occurrence, albeit more common in football than baseball.

I was largely referencing rational fans, not irrational ones. I don't feel the need to acknowledge irrational fans. Or the average football fan in general.

    Nothing, but it helps us

If it winds up being TJ, indeed.

It's a real gray area situation, honestly. I don't think anyone would root for folks to sustain serious injuries, but there's no doubt that it helps your team when such maladies befall an opponent.

  6. Toronto is playing some good ball. They've been on a tear since the All-star break. Good starting pitching has led this winning pattern. They are primed to compete for the division, I'm afraid. I'm not so sure Boston will be hanging around much longer. I sense they may slide back a bit.

Boston's still probably the most all-around talented team in the East. They're going to be there 'til the end, too. It's going to be a war.

With Detroit starting to catch fire and the Astros lingering, there's no guarantee that whomever loses the East is going to have a spot in the WC game. O's have to really start to roll, here.

  7. I am sure everyone will get these numbers stuck in their craw, but I think the fact that we have a 50% chance to make the playoffs is awesome. We are truly in a golden age for the Os.

I'm pretty sure everyone on this board would have signed up for "Orioles in 1st place on August 1." But, yes, some will complain vehemently about the numbers.

  8. They'll be back. Next year they add Scherzer and Shields to their rotation and get ARoid back to DH, as well as signing Miller for the pen along with Betances, and maybe Robertson back. Oh and Hanley at SS.

Next year, they very well could be. And the O's could be a shell of their current selves. As for this year though... the dream's dead.

The Yanks actually get a HUGE boost with Jeter's retirement. They were paying one of the worst regular SS's in the game more than $20 million a year for a couple years there.

I don't know that A-Rod's return will pay big dividends, though, for the record. He hasn't been a particularly exceptional or healthy bat since 2010 or so... and he's coming off a full year away from the game.
