Um... Trading Basallo doesn't shorten our window to 1-2 years. What will shorten our window of being the best team in baseball is if we go cheap and don't extend superstars like Adley/Gunnar/Holliday. OR if those who we choose to extend suffer injuries and are never the same level ballplayers.

I don't see a realistic scenario where loosing one of Basallo/Mayo/Kjerstad shortens our window.

Um taking out the heir apparent at catcher behind Adley would definitely shorten the window. I get that Miller is the flavor of the month, but if you look at analytics, you’d realize, while he is good, how much better is he than the next guy? Versus a premier position at catcher for the next 5-7 years? Well, that’s a no brainer for me. But we can agree to disagree!

No knee jerk reaction here. Nor do I not appreciate the value/talent of Basallo.

I am not saying that the trade is a no brainer. I would prefer to give up less for Miller if possible. But I am not going to pretend like it's not a serious discussion worth having.

Having Miller this season makes us odds on World Series favorites. Having Miller next season WITH Bautista makes us odds on World Series favorites. Meanwhile, our offense will be elite with or without Basallo both now and in the future.

I am sorry if this is upsetting that this is a serious thing to consider. The present now matters just as much as the future because championships are the goal now.

No, the window is more important than just one year. Ten years vs. 1-2

It boggles my mind how some people are willing to over pay and give away the entire farm for pennies on the dollar.

It’s upsetting to me really. Either they are knee jerk reaction types or they have no concept of what they have. I’m not sure which is worse, but it’s upsetting all the same.

Would you do that? A simple one for one?

I keep bouncing back and forth: a “exactly as designed” reliever, capable of at least a four out save, but only throwing 60 innings a season, with TJ forever looming on next week’s schedule, vs a stunning no-limits catching prospect who can’t even legally drink yet.

But who do we need NOW?

I think Oakland would do that trade, because Basallo’s clock can reasonably be delayed until 26, so his early years won’t be wasted.

    What do you guys think?

    #@$% no. Jesus guys.

I have the opposite take? The dude was trying to help the team win the game. In general, I want warriors.

He wanted to battle. It's not like he gets some big bonus with each save. I hope we hide him on the DL. He's clearly good when his arm is fresh but i don't want him pitching more than 2 out of 4 days. We need him for the playoffs not April.

If he can’t pitch one inning two out of four days. I’m not sure what to say.

The IL is most likely the solution for the team. I don't see a solution for him to become effective with the other relievers around him. We simply don't have the type of bullpen that can buffet him by keeping him from being used frequently.

The good news is that our offense and starting pitcher should be good enough to keep us afloat until the trade deadline.

I agree man. Put him on the 15 then 60 then maybe his arm will be strong enough for the closing stretch. Or use him as a trade piece, no clue.

I mean it wasn't like he wasn't suspect and didn't lose his closer's role last season. Was it very hard to understand that at his age, he would need a reduced work load?

It's too late to do anything about it now. We just have to survive until the deadline.

But it's safe to say that if you are struggling to put the A's pedestrian hitters away, you probably can't be counted on very reliably in high leverage situations right now.

Agreed, park him on the IL.

Is it a surprise that he is injured? I mean what was the likely outcome given the usage rate? I don't think that Kimbrel is the only one to blame, he didn't keep calling for himself to come into game nor did he sign himself. We kinda had to know/should have known what we were getting with a guy (who was once great but is now at the end of his career).

He pitches the same usage as the rest of the guys. Quite simply put, he’s old. He can’t handle the closer role any longer if he can’t be called upon to close out games and nab saves when needed. Him not being able to do his job means more pressure put on someone else to carry his load. On top of that, he has likely said “naw, I’m good” more times than just now and well, there’s a lot of close games in baseball. So now we need two closers because the old man can’t hack it?

  9. When Kimbrel goes on the IL this week, just go with Closer by committee until Suarez assumes the role, cano as setup guy, dfa ramirez when Bradish gets called up and pray that Perez comes back to form or Charles can make a cano-like jump in command. July we will bolster the bullpen via trade and hopefully by then kimbrel will actually be healthy.

And you just provided evidence for what I was saying. Do you know for a fact that Kimbrel put himself above his teammates?  Hyde (and Ebel) was much closer to the field than Palmer. He had every opportunity to pull Kimbrel. And he decided to leave him in.

In the end, you very well could be correct in your speculation. But let's get some actual sources and facts first before making a blanket accusation.

And it took all of 30 minute for the injury to be disclosed which means he hid it from Hyde and the trainer when they went out to check on him. It’s clear as day. Dude placed himself above the team and Hyde should be absolutely livid he believed him before sending him to the showers and bringing in Tate. His outing on Friday was similar so it can be reasonable to assume he was injured then as well. If I’m Hyde, I’d use this as a way to build character for the rest of the team and highlight what Kimbrel did as the wrong side of things. Team first always. Honesty always.

Managers aren’t going to throw their players under the bus. You’re never going to hear that. Trust your eyes man.

I can't argue with any of your ideas. My only beef is accusing Kimbrel of inappropriately hiding an injury without any actual knowledge or proof that he was doing so. Is it possible? Yes. Is it factual? To be determined.

And my thing is, it was obvious. Too many data points to indicate anything other than that’s what happened. You think Hyde is cool with losing a game because a pro put himself above his teammates? I don’t think so. Hyde is going to be pissed for sure. It’s disappointing and I get Kimbrel is a competitor but in this instance, it was a selfish move and I would think would affect trust between player and coach. When Palmer can see it, and he knows pitching, you listen.

  13. 17 minutes ago, Jagwar said:

I'll admit, it looked like he was off and his body language was awful. But every single coach has access to every warmup pitch he throws, and I find it hard to believe that he could fool all of them before stepping on that mound.

My guess (uneducated and uninformed as it may be) is that he tweaked something on one of his first pitches, and thought he could work his way through it. Hyde and Ebel came out, and in the end it is THEIR decision to keep him on the mound or not. Until we have proof that Kimbrel was nefariously hiding an injury, it's all speculation.

When he goes on the IL this week, we will know for sure. Look, the guy has earned his stripes and guys like that get greater leeway. You think he didn’t say “I’m good?” You think the fact that he didn’t throw anything but fastballs wasn’t a giveaway? And what was that shit on the top of his cap? Like I said, Kimbrel is in the doghouse. It’s going to take a lot for him to climb out. Closer by committee until Suarez assumes the role, cano as setup guy, dfa ramirez when Bradish gets called up and pray that Perez comes back to form or Charles can make a cano-like jump in command. July we will bolster the bullpen via trade and hopefully by then kimbrel will actually be healthy.

And you were somehow miraculously privy to all conversations they were having?

Don't you think that if something wasn't right with him while warming up, the bullpen coach would have told Hyde about it?

Palmer said so on the broadcast bud. You can tell by the reactions from Hyde and the trainer. They trusted him when he said he was good. Body language is important. Up to you to read the tea leaves or hide your head in the sand. Kimbrel cost us two games because of his pride and that comes before the fall.

In any case, Elias' plan A just might have gotten flushed down the potty

Not necessarily. Kimbrel breaks down at the end of the year. This way, hide him on the 60 day. Get him for down the stretch. It could still work out but Kimbrel was not honest with being hurt and it cost us two games against the damn A’s. I’d be pissed if I were Hyde.

  16. Just now, Jagwar said:

Tell you what. If Kimbrel is hurt (and it looks like he is), I'd consider Suarez for the setup man and move Cano to closer

    Or swap roles?

Cano is allergic to the 9th. Suarez moves to closer role when he’s rested. Until then it’s by committee, Kimbrel, who is on my shit list for putting himself above the team by hiding his injury, on the IL and Bradish comes up to take Suarez’s spot. Suarez can dial it up to 98 in short spurts and above all, he throws strikes.

Just shaking my head at the defeatist posts in here.  If the players had the same loser attitude some of you do, the team would be lucky to win 50 games.  But guess what?   They’re way more mentally tough and they shake off disappointed losses like this one routinely.

It’s a culture problem with our fans sadly. I’m not sure its origin but it is systemic and especially noticeable on Twitter. I get that you could make the same claim about all sports teams but with ours…they are quite vocal. It’s unfortunate, but I’m getting better at tuning them out.

Let's hold back that proclamation until 2029.

I should preface, this early in his career. He’s just following the standard Oriole rookie model of struggle upon first call up then come back later and crush it.

Norby must have insulted Elias’ mom or something. Makes zero sense to promote McKenna instead of him.

Well I mean they are already two deep at second with Westy and Mateo and Urias as well. Id rather see what Mateo and Urias give you which, at this point, is going to be significantly more than Jackson and you get to retain the extra year of service time. That type of depth also means you don’t need Norby there either. McKenna gives us the outfield defensive replacement and speed off the bench along with Mateo. Perhaps with Norby, they don’t want to bring him up, have him struggle and possible worsen his potential trade value. Projections may be better than actualization as we are seeing play out with Hall and Ortiz.

Are you talking about the one he hit into the Crawford boxes in left? I don't think he hit one out to right in Houston. Unless you're talking about a college game maybe.

I will not be shocked if Kjerstad forces himself into the lineup. LH or not, he and Cowser are better than Hays and probably Santander. There will be a timeshare for sure, and it could take a minute, but Kjerstad could be an even better hitter than Cowser.

I saw Heston play in Houston (say that three times fast) and that guy hit a homerun that looked like he barely swung at all and yet it powered over the right field wall. Heston is incredibly strong, big, and has great plate discipline. Santander is great because he’s a switch hitter, but if Heston can hit lefties, they really are very similar players. Here’s hoping his defense has improved because he’s the heir apparent in right.
