Here's the problem, our government officials no longer feel like they have to answer to journalists if they don't like the questions.

Ever watch Fox45 in the morning and see how much corruption they dig up across Baltimore and the State? When they ask questions to the politicians or officials, they just don't respond.

Why would they respond? People keep voting in the same old corrupt politicians while all the public does is cry and wine about how terrible things are and they can't understand why nothing changes.

Now I'm going to leave it there so we don't get too political, but the amount of corruption at every level of governments from the local to Federal levels has become insane.

Unfortunately most people got their faces stuck in their phones watching Tik Tok videos while watching the world burn around them like it's not happening.

So even when journalists do actually ask the right questions (and most are just bought off or in cahoots with the politicians), they are ignored.

Amen.  And don't forget the role of many media outlets in protecting and propping up politicians...controlling the narrative means many regular Americans really aren't even aware of the extent of the corruption and how their tax dollars are actually being used (wasted)....

Agreed.   I don’t want employees who are resentful that they are being denied opportunities.

Exactly.  We don't know what really happened behind closed doors, but if the O's really denied (or slow played) the request for someone to interview for a promotion that's a very bad look.  It potentially lowers morale, and also sets the stage for the Red Sox to deny us the chance to interview someone from their organization.  Like I said, we don't know if this is true but there is precedent for O's ownership denying these requests...

Wow, this is turning into a rather lousy deal for MD tax payers. I fail to see how the Orioles have so much leverage that has enabled them to extract such concessions. Gov Moore & the new MSA leadership are either a bunch of push overs, or as some posters have alluded to, maybe they have ulterior motives...

Politicians always have ulterior motives....and they usually aren't of benefit to the average taxpayer...

I get this line of thinking, but I don't buy the idea that they've stopped developing.

Somewhere in this thread, someone mentioned Justin Turner as a comp for Norby. I have zero clue whether that's realistic at all, but his calling card is the hit tool. I can definitely see him forcing an opportunity if it keeps developing. We just saw a team that didn't have the lineup depth in the post season. An advanced hit tool is valuable.

And Stowers still has big power. I've not given up on him, though it feels like he had about 14 months of going sideways. Still, he was on fire in July and September, and still had an .867 OPS in August. Problem is that k rate is still probably too high.

I think you misunderstood; I wasn't saying I thought they weren't still developing or had somehow regressed.  I like both of them a lot and still see potential in both their bats.  I was trying to say that if those two weren't going to be given a legit chance in the majors and were blocked by both veterans and other prospects more highly valued by the organization, it would have made more sense to trade them last offseason.  After another year in AAA and a year older, their prospect status and trade value have diminished IMO.  When you stockpile the position player stash that we have, you need to give them a shot in the majors or trade them for players in positions of need.  I prefer to reserve AAA depth for guys like Vavra, and use top 100 prospects like Norby to either play or trade.

What pitching is the one year remaining on Santander's contract likely to get us? I don't think it will be a difference make (somebody who can positively impact games in October).

To your other point about JA, we can only hope that he actually cares anything about winning and was disappointed in the finish of the season. But if he is as apathetic as I believe that he is, I believe/fear that you are right and we will be headed for more of the same - very short stint in the postseason.

Agreed.  If we trade Santander I don't expect a starting pitcher in return.  He's pretty much one-dimensional at this point, so I'd like to get a nice bullpen arm in return or maybe a couple pitching prospects.  But hopefully they'd use the salary savings from Santander to sign a starting pitcher.

  6. I like all the ideas in the OP, but I just don't see Elias and JA being that bold or aggressive.  I don't see JA coughing up the money needed for a TOR or even mid-rotation starter; I expect another Gibson or Lyles type signing.  The one downside of us winning 101 games this year is it probably tells JA he doesn't need to invest any more money in signing players.  My guess is a one year deal for a #5 veteran starter, sign a couple relievers, trade Norby/Stowers for a reliever, and sign one veteran bat.  I think the boldest move that Elias might make is trading Santander for pitching.

I think Mayo and Holliday start the year in AAA.   I agree either could be ready by June 1, but they’ll need to prove it.

I’d like to  see Kjerstad, Cowser, Ortiz and Westburg all on the major league team.  None of them are off limits for a trade though.

Norby and Stowers are trade bait, or they can be AAA depth.

Agreed.  But I think they waited one year too long to trade Norby and Stowers.  Their prospect status and trade value has certainly diminished in the past year.

  8. One of the best things about KB is he knows when to shut up and let Palmer or Ben talk.  I also like that he's not so in awe of the ex-ballplayers that he doesn't mind ribbing them.  I think he does a great job of walking the fine line of respecting their careers and knowledge, and still busting balls like good friends do.

Thorne was an outstanding broadcaster in general: great voice, tamber, cadence, rhythm.  But KB doesn't make as many glaring mistakes on pitch identification or baseball rules as Thorne made.  And Thorne would never correct his mistakes...just kept talking away...and didn't even seem to notice when Palmer would correct him.

I don't know the man personally and hated the whole Kevin Brown thing.  I also have been and Orioles fan since 1970 and have seen a number of good intentioned owners run this franchise into the ground.  We are finally having success and I am going to enjoy it.

You do realize it's possible to both thoroughly enjoy our success this year and also to hate how Angelos behaves and runs the ownership group?

Stowers should probably be in the majors, but not on our roster. Ortiz should definitely be in the majors. They aren't particularly close in terms of upside as prospects.

Because of positional value, I think Ortiz has more upside/future value.  But I think it's closer than you think.  Don't forget that Stowers has very impressive EV and power potential.  His prospect status and trade value has taken a huge hit since he didn't get a chance this year, but he's still an interesting prospect.

Planned my Saturday around This Week In Baseball.  When I got my Apple TV+ trial (to watch the O’s of course) I found they have a library of old episodes.  It was fun watching the one from Opening Week in ‘82 with a feature on rookies Cal Ripken, Jr. and Terry Francona, both of whom with full heads of hair!  😂

I also planned my Saturday around watching TWIB.  Just hearing the TWIB theme music brings me back to my childhood and gives me goosebumps.

Need a lot of change with the pitching staff and it will be interesting to see how they handle the positional talent.

This.  I'd like them to acquire a mid-rotation starter (I doubt JA will approve a large free agent contract, so it will probably be via trade), and several relievers.  They have to do something with the position player logjam; no more kicking the can down the road.  I think trading Santander makes the most sense; JA won't extend him and I wouldn't want them to anyway.  We also have Kjerstad and Cowser ready to take over RF.  I would also use Norby, Ortiz, and Stowers as trade bait.

That Urias guy that threw the ball away in a crucial moment the other day?  That guy?

First, I wasn't referring to just this one Frazier play...but just in general that it makes sense to replace him with a better defender late in close games.  And second, Urias makes one bad throw and that makes him a bad defender?  Urias won a gold glove and is an outstanding defender at multiple positions.

  14. I certainly don't want to get into another Frazier/Westburg debate that's already been beaten to death, but I also think it's extremely clear that Westburg is the superior defender either judging by stats or the eye test.  It's obvious that Hyde loves Frazier's clutchiness/veteranosity, and as the season winds down he seems to be playing him more.  But what seems most confusing to me is why Hyde doesn't replace Frazier for defense late in games with Urias or Westburg....I'd also imagine Mateo could play a much better 2B as well.

There's a surprising number of people who grew up around the public spotlight, and have PR people giving them advice on what to say/not say, who simply can't help themselves and blurt out whatever dumb thought crosses their mind. Politicians, business owners, executive officers, team owners, etc.

Yes, and he's obviously one of those people who has never had to be accountable for his words or actions and has no idea how out of touch with the real world he really is.

    Pretty much everyone was.

Yeah, I keep waiting for the big slump that brings him back closer to his career averages but it never came.  I also keep thinking his extremely low walk rate and aggressive approach will lead to problems, but that hasn't happened yet either.  The big question is did he figure something out, or will the league catch up to him next year and he turns back into a pumpkin?

I'd stick with your grade for Frazier. He is an enigma. He's awful defensively and mostly offensively. But, he has been clutch (I do think that is a thing) and for me, the payroll is so low that the money doesn't matter. I think I still would have liked to see what Ortiz and Westburg would have done with that playing time but his hit in the Tampa series alone gardners a C grade!

You do make some good points.  But I think Westburg would have been consistently better offensively, defensively, and on the base paths for the entire year and thus far outweighed the nice clutch moments Frazier has had.  Also, Ortiz and Westburg are not super young prospects but in their mid twenties and were MLB ready at the beginning of the year.  Being blocked by Frazier stole a year of their ML development time.  The Frazier signing didn't make sense short term or long term.  But in Elias' defense, my guess is he was surprised Westburg and Ortiz were ML ready at the start of the season and thus saw Frazier as a means to give them more AAA development time (even though they didn't need it).
