The only person who seems to make this an issue is Buster. Does Mussina even care? Also, every Oriole with a retired number has a connection to the glory years. All with the possible exception of Murray were well known outside of Baltimore as well. Mussina was a very good Oriole, but he's not an icon as the others were. Is he more important in Orioles history than other notable pitchers such as McNally, Flanagan, or even Tippy Martinez? I don't think so. He's in the Orioles Hall of Fame and rightfully so. That's all that's warranted.

Remember when the 89 team had a huge lead and then lost 12 out of 14 games and gave it all away?
Remember when the 83 Orioles had two different seven game losing streaks?

I'm sure we'll be taken seriously. Is there a point here
We've played well all year, but every time the schedule looks difficult people act as if we have little chance. I think we will be fine. Maybe I'm being naive.

Shouldn't these teams be concerned that the Orioles are on their schedule? We have one of the best records versus teams with a 500 record or better.

I can't argue against his demotion, but I wonder if having him pitch in long relief when he was recalled would have been more beneficial. I still think that helps young pitchers become acclimated to MLB. It's just not done anymore.

I bet Hyde would have let Baumann go two innings if he had been good. Unfortunately, he was not.
You might be right, but I think Irvin was fresh and could have pitched 3 or more innings. I wanted to save the pen for the Jays series.

I've been an Orioles fan since the 71 World Series. I've come to accept five man rotations and the fact that starting pitchers are pulled at 100 pitches, but I really don't understand current bullpen usage. Irvin was acquired because his ability to pitch late in games. When Wells had to leave after 5 innings, why not have Irvin pitch the rest of the game or at least until match up time in the 8th/9th? Regardless of the outcome, we would have a fresh bullpen for the Jays series. It seems to me that no relief pitchers pitch more than 2 innings at time. The only times relievers pitched more than two innings this season were Wells in relief of Bradish in Texas and Hall during the Detroit doubleheader. We always seem to be short on available relievers even with an 8 man pen. That makes no sense. Voth & Baumann should be pitching 2-3 innings regularly, especially Voth. He doesn't handle inherited runners. Has the long relief pitcher disappeared?

I’m not sure that this start qualifies as “an excellent start”. Maybe decent? He didn’t complete 6 and gave up 3 ER (while admittedly one was an inherited runner scored).
The second run was because of poor defense. Varva should have caught the ball ruled a double. I also thought Hyde should have given him another batter in the sixth as the hit was a seeing eye single at best. He was very good after the first inning.

Yeah! They beat us 2 World Series after we were up 3 games to 1 each Series.
Nope, we took a 2-0 lead in 71, dropped the next three, won game 6, before losing game 7. We blew a 3-1 lead in 79. I can't stand hearing We Are Family to this day.

Maybe Hyde wants Cano & Bautista rested for the Rays next week. He may value those games more. I wouldn't be surprised if Adley has his first full day off tomorrow as we have the 3rd catcher. If we had played an AL East team tonight, Cano probably pitches the 8th.

Happens more often than you think. Look at how the Nats bombed after 2019. Even the O’s, while they didn’t win the WS in 2014, went from 96 wins to 47 wins in 4 years.
You're right, but the Orioles of my youth were always good. The descent from 84-88 was shocking to me as I only knew the Orioles as contenders. I've gotten used poor teams over the last forty years, unfortunately.

Maybe Im in the minority here....but even though he got banged around a bit...I was very encouraged by DL Hall's outing...he can strike people out and he seemed to really battle even when he was giving up hits...I liked his tenacity. Now maybe these Tiger hitters arent great and he'll get tagged by better hitters on other teams...but 7 K's in 3 innings is eye opening...and if he can mature and learn...I think we have a very valuable pitcher here...Again, maybe some of you dont see it or roll your eyes...but I think he could be a help us a ton...maybe even be a starter at some point...and I think Kremer is regressing anyway...Hall aboard...we've got a pitcher...
I'd rather keep up here and pitch in long or middle relief. He'll have plenty of opportunities since our starters only go 5-6 innings. I think he'll learn more in the majors than AAA. That was standard operating procedure not that long ago. If it works, he can go to the rotation. If not, he seemed to succeed in short relief in September.

What was amazing was how quickly we went from World Series champs to horrible. The 88 team also had two hall of fame players in their prime. I never thought the Orioles would have a team as bad as that again, but we've had three teams worse since 2017.

In each of those 3 highlight plays, who thinks Varva could do any of that?
If Cowser gets called up now, he replaces McKenna. Varva is the utility guy as he plays the infield as well as outfield.

G Rod has nothing to prove in AAA. Have him pitch in long relief. That's what they used to do with rookie pitchers. McDonald said he is too amped up. Long relief isn't as stressful. Once he figures it out, he returns to the rotation.

Final game of 1982. Dishonorable mentions: 08/06/86, Friday game of the last weekend of the 1989 season in Toronto. The opening series of the 1978 season against the Brewers was horrid as well.

I'm about as sick of the Angelos family follies as anyone else, but my canary in a coal mine is Elias. If he decides to leave for greener pastures before we are a contender, I'll stop giving John Angelos any benefit of the doubt. However, Elias seems happy in the job. Hopefully, a long term lease is signed soon. Extra credit if the MASN lawsuit is resolved. How I wish DeWitt would have purchased the Orioles from Jacobs before the bankruptcy court got involved.

Someone should tell Buster the Yankees haven't retired Mussina's number either.

I don't know why people are surprised that Camden Yards is cashless. I haven't been to a profession stadium since Covid that accepted cash. Are there any?
-
Jimmy Key and Kevin Brown signed here in the 90's. Camden Yards was known as a hitters park by that time.

If we're going to have young pitching, job one in the off season is acquiring players that catch the ball. We gave them five outs.

I thought Eddie hit a Grand Slam in the 8th when I saw it live. I still can't believe we lost that series. I will always cringe when I hear We Are Family.

Rodriguez also played for the 83 White Sox after the Orioles released him. During the playoffs, weren't some players concerned that he knew the Orioles signs?
