Sure, he’s by no means somebody that the Orioles should be overly resistant to part with if he’s a necessary piece in a deadline deal. But he’s not superfluous in the system so he’s not somebody I would expect they look to offer up as trade bait.

I think the Orioles will try to deal from their strength in infield, corner OF and C, and avoid trying to deal any pitchers or CF. But if the team they’re trading with is demanding pitching or CF in return, Fabian and others the Orioles would probably prefer to hang onto will be on the table. Like when the Orioles traded Zach Showalter in the Flaherty deal last year, likely because the Cardinals were demanding pitching.

Seems like we’re just going in circles on this. Showalter is exactly a use case for why I think JF could be moved at some point. There’s only a select 2 or 3 on Elias’ absolute no touch list (presumably - but no one knows for sure obviously).  JF would be moved if the right team asks in the right deal as I doubt he’s not on the into untouchable list. We are both ultimately saying the same thing here…I think.

BTW, interesting what the Cards are doing with Showalter, moved to pen and pitching only once a week. Man he’s been dominant. 18.1 IP, 30K and only 13 H and 6 BB allowed this year. I was in the camp that was very disappointed he was moved (even before Flahery came over and clunked).

Not sure where @scarey1999 is getting his information but Liranzo is still listed on the FCL roster and Eric_Birdland on X who goes to a lot of FCL games and gets some decent information had video of Liranzo practicing a month ago and last week said he’d be back soon.

Apologies @SydnorI must have gotten bad info and didn’t verify further. Very glad to hear he is in fact stateside!

@Tony-OH do we know anything about why Liranzo hasn’t played in a game at an affiliate this season? I haven’t seen anything indicating that he is injured. If Liranzo is not injured, it seems odd that he wouldn’t be playing given the positive press he has received here and elsewhere.

Not Tony, but he’s going to start out on one of the DSL teams again.  Was hoping maybe he’d start at FCL. Maybe he lights up DSL and only has a short stay in the Dominican?

Ok, but it’s not atypical for a good college prospect to be 23 and in AA.  For comparison, super duper Yankee phenom Spenser Jones just turned 23 last week, has a 33% K rate, and a .626 OPS for AA Somerset.

I don’t disagree. You could make a lot of cases for or against acceptable production (or lack thereof) based of player level and respective age. I simply don’t think this player is a must keep as many are insinuating. Luckily we’re all just armchair GMs and can hazard guesses and opinions all day long without real repercussion.

I’ll be the dissenter.  So long as they’re bringing him in at the start of an inning and he’s been told what do expect, it really doesn’t matter if his outing starts in the 1st inning or the 5th.  They haven’t let him go past 70 pitches in any outing this year, so it doesn’t really limit his innings a lot if he enters mid-game.  He threw 53.2 innings last year, is at 31.0 already this year with maybe 20 appearances still to come and I’d bet they don’t want him throwing more than 110 innings tops.  My guess is he’ll start about half the time and be used like this half the time.

IP or limits do not have much to do with the argument here though.

Starters are creatures of habit, more so than any other player outside of maybe a closer. You like to know you’re getting the ball in the 1st inning of every game you pitch. Why tinker with that? Especially for a young, highly thought of player like him? Just seems like the wrong approach.

Those are all also reasons why another club wouldn’t want to trade for him. They’re apparent to everyone, and baked into his trade value.

To me, “trade bait” is a guy who has more value to the Orioles as a trade piece than by keeping him, because they are blocked by other superior players in this organization. Joey Ortiz was a prime example. Kyle Stowers is the biggest one now. Creed Willems probably. Connor Norby too, but he’s more similar to Fabian in that he could be a nice complementary bench RH bat for all the lefties and probably isn’t quite good enough for another team to value him as a potential starter. Fabian isn’t remotely blocked in this organization.

Which is why my very first statement was literally “hope he keeps it up”, meaning continue to play well, thus increasing his trade value, then move him while his value is up.

You all are right in saying he’s not blocked. Pretty obvious he isn’t. However that’s not a good reason to not trade a guy to help you win now if that’s what they choose to do by bringing in pitching help.

His birthday is Sep.27.     I don’t consider September 27 to be rapidly approaching.

I thought it was a little sooner.  Ok so either way, he’ll be 24 entering next season. Still not “young”.

Why would Fabian be trade bait? He is a RH bat that can play a plus CF. The ideal situation for him would be continued improvement into a platoon/4th OF on next year's team.

I view him as trade bait because:

    1) his K rate does not lend toward future success at higher levels

    2) I don’t believe his hit tool/contact rate will allow him to hit for a high enough avg to make use of any benefit he may provide with power at the plate and defense

    3) he’s not exactly a spring chicken, prospect wise…rapidly approaching his 24th bday while still trying to figure out AA

Funny you mention that about the piggyback idea, first thing I thought when I read about the outing was wondering why they wouldn’t start him.

I thought it was odd too, that’s why I mentioned it in the comment I made last eve. Fully agree with what Tony said. If the FO sees him as a future starter, then he should be starting only.

  10. Do we potentially have something in Edwin Amparo? Nice game today and it’s very early but that’s a pretty nice stat line. He’s repeating FCL but didn’t get many ABs last year for whatever reason.

  11. Seems like he’s starting to get comfortable. This kid was really impressive from what I saw of him a few times at ST. Needs to watch those Ks but otherwise trending in the right direction.

Another dinger tonight and OPS up to .848.  He will get one more PA but no Ks & 1 BB through his first 4 PAs.  He’s officially got my attention.

Hope he keeps it up. He and Beavers could make nice trade bait along with others commonly mentioned.

Not a subscriber so can’t read it, but this is a copy/paste from the MLB app Orioles “Injuries and Moves” section where they recently provided an update on Felix:

The secondary procedures (both common after Tommy John surgery) cleaned up scar tissue in Bautista’s right elbow and moved the nerve to free it up from compression. His reconstructed right UCL continues to heal well, and his recovery timeline won’t be affected.

  14. Went to my first game at OPACY since 2010 last Saturday. Man was I impressed with the upgrades and the food selections since my last visit!

Overpriced or not, I had the Jimmies crab dip pretzel smothered with cheese and it was deeeelicious.

Also enjoyed a “new” Orioles orange can Natty Boh, got some extra baseball due to extra innings, plus a W…and the rain held off till right after the game ended. All around a great day!

Interesting, thx. Must have been while trying to make some sort of play on a foul ball or something I’d guess.  Glad to know it’s nothing major.  Part of me was hoping he was on his way to OPACY, but I knew better 😅

Kjerstad I can at least see a role for.  Mayo is going to take Urias' place at 2B/3B and Norby is Mateo's replacement as SS & CF backup.  I'm especially interested in seeing Norby play SS/CF.

Mayo plays 3B, but he’s gotten limited time at 1B.  He will never play 2B.

Norby doesn’t play either SS or CF.  He’s been almost exclusively 2B and LF in the minors.

  17. The O’s were going to “lose” the money used to sign him as he was the last remaining unsigned player in his draft year, but yeah…pretty disappointing so far. He didn’t look like he had any special tools when I saw him play in spring training this year.
