  1. I just read Eagles and Empire, by David Clary, about the history of US-Mexico relations. It focused mostly on the Mexican-American War, it's lead-up and it's consequences, but also included a good bit of background as to why each nation was in their position at the time of the war.

Then I blew through The Lost Symbol, which I enjoyed.

Now I'm reading Lamb by Christopher Moore. Funny, funny book.

  2. The most recent baseball book I read was Ballpark by Peter Richmond. We've discussed it before, but it tells the story of how Orioles Park at Camden Yards came to be, all of the back stories that people never knew, and gave some strong insights into how the team was run and the owners, both Edward Bennett Williams and Eli Jacobs. Larry Lucchino also has some interesting moments in the book. Lets just say after reading it I came to the conclusion that in my lifetime, since I've been alive for the past three owners, the O's have never had great owners. But, that's my opinion and that's all I'll say.

Perhaps most interesting is what Camden Yards could have looked like. Open the cover and the first thing you see is a soulless, concrete mousoleum staring back at you. I can't imagine the stadium any other way than it is.

Highly, highly recommended. We came awfully close a couple times to doing something seriously wrong with the plans for what became Camden Yards.

I think the best parts are all of the little stories: the bricklayer, the electrician, the architectural student. There was so much involved with getting that place to where it is now.

  3. Kitchen Confidential - Anthony Bourdain.

    It's...um...interesting :laughlol:

I got The Orioles Encyclopedia for my birthday, so I'll probably be in-and-out of that book for a while. I've also got a backup of history and alternative-fiction waiting for me (the one downside of working at a library: any time I hear about something that sounds good I immediately order it along with similar books I find in looking it up :P).

    Kitchen Confidential was very good.

I also read Gray Victory in the meantime. Another of the alternate-history Civil War books I like to read. I found the point they used for the historical change (Johnston remaining in command in Georgia against Sherman, fighting to a stalemate and causing Lincoln's defeat in the 1864 election) interesting, though it really is just a setup for the main plots: the court-martial of Jeb Stuart for his actions before the Battle of Gettysburg, and the planned terrorist attack by fanatical abolitionists on the Confederate government. Really interesting storyline.

I'm now reading Satchel: The Life and Times Of an American Legend. Lots of information I didn't know about the Negro Leagues and baseball in general in the 1920s and 1930s so far.

  5. Where They Ain't by Burt Solomon

Orioles fans should be required by law to read this book.

Right now I'm reading Gifts of the Jews by Thomas Cahill.

My next one looks to be Bottom of the Ninth: Branch Rickey, Casey Stengel, and the Daring Scheme to Save Baseball From Itself by Michael Shapiro. Looks interesting.

  6. I hate having to hear that crappy duo every once in awhile on the audio clips before and after games on MLB 09 The Show.

That and the fact that there are three different O's broadcasting clips, and they're all about good things for the Red Sox. Grr.

I'd say they love the Sox, but isn't that the one with the ad mocking Pedroia? :P

  7. You know, I think it's pretty offensive that the OP implied that Catfish Hunter was in the broadcasting booth... isn't he just making fun of Catfish for being dead and bragging about being alive? ;)

It's just reminding me of a mistake made by Tugg Speedman in Tropic Thunder.

    (Too obscure?)

  8. So you can show a picture. Are you a moron? Because hey since we're being civil and it's easy to be a tough guy online.

You're the guy who can't do a Google search, or learn new information after it's pointed out to you a week before you make the same error.

We're still in glass houses territory.

  9. The point is that Palmer talks about palmer all night long. Don't you think it gets a little old, my ignorant friend?

And on mlb.tv, they don't start the games like they do on local tv. I had no idea who the Nats announcer was, my ignorant friend, which is a little piece of context that would have made Palmer's self-engrandizing comments a little clearer.

All that hardly matters. THe point remains that Palmer talks about Palmer ad-nauseum. Couldn't he keep the references about the O's to at least this decade?

If Boog Powell was in that booth, he'd "talk about Boog" all night long. Brooks would "talk about Brooks". Cal would "talk about Cal". Devi Cruz would "talk about Devi Cruz".

You must hate every former player that is a broadcaster, right? Because, you know, they all talk about themselves all night. And after all, that's your yardstick for announcer quality.

  10. We're not friends and you make sarcastic comments and you complain when someone calls you an idiot. That's a glass house, my "friend".

Oh, well gee, you sure got me there. Who are you again? Why should I care what you think, especially when you can't make a decent argument and have your evidence disproved into epic-fail status?

Methinks you should worry about your glass house before you start whining about others'.

  11. Being a good pitcher 30 years ago earned him a spot in the HOF. You don't find it embarrassing for him that he continually talks about himself all night long?

Embarrassing isn't using your vast knowledge and experience, both first-hand as a Hall-of-Famer and as an observer and broadcaster for two decades, to compare eras and analyze situations.

One would think it would be publicly making several major factual errors, including one that was previously corrected by said public, and ham-handedly trying to make a bad argument without answering for your mistakes. But that's just my opinion.

  12. You're an idiot.

Yeah, that's the way to go here...;)

You completely misunderstood and misrepresented a comment made by a guy most Orioles fans love, then made an incorrect assumption about another team broadcaster that a simple Google or Wikipedia search would have corrected.

Stones and glass houses, my friend.

  13. Well, I can confidently say that thanks to the well-presented and thought-out arguments by Oldfan in this thread, I have completely changed my position on Tom Davis.

Now, I will no longer be able to take him seriously, and I refuse to watch MASN Saturday mornings or listen to 105.7 anytime he is on the air.

If Tom Davis is of the same mind as this guy, he doesn't deserve my ear.

  14. I agree with Davis. Only a woeful team like the Orioles has fans that drool and salivate over their pretty much mundane minor league prospects, and most contending teams don't operate that way at all. Its called being talent starved and winless for so many years.:(

    So, what do I win?

  15. I am currently reading' date='

Change Up An Oral History of 8 Key Events that Shaped Modern Baseball!

It has been a very easy and fun read. It has interviews from many players, coaches and sport writers from over last half-centurty.

    I highly recommend it.[/quote']

I just started it after Dark Side. Very good so far.

  16. House and Philosophy - Pretty self-explanatory :P

The Dark Side of the Diamond - About different "darker" aspects of baseball and their causes from and effect on American society: gambling, alcohol, drugs, violence, etc.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes - Got it on my Kindle for cheap, after the aforementioned House book piqued my interest. Only just starting A Study in Scarlett, though.

  17. Love the idea, Tony.

One thought, though: you might think about making this more of a general ticket-exchange forum. During football season there's always a couple threads about Ravens tickets, too, and I'm sure you'd get the occasional Terps or Wizards tickets as well.

I guess, though, that there might not be enough people offering those for that to matter.

    Just a suggestion :)
