I think the more fundamental thing is that they were so discouraged by the physical that they didn't offer the 1 million or whatever he was originally looking for. That physical must have really been prognosis negative. I can see not offering the 40% just to be nice. That seems ancillary to the bigger question.

Despite pitching well, Dan then had no second thoughts about promptly sending him off to Oakland later in August of that year for cash considerations. Maybe he had a handshake agreement with Pat and there was no room in Baltimore, but that deal still puzzles me to this day.

Tonight’s Mariners – Angels game featured several former Orioles, headlined by Yovani Gallardo making his Mariner debut. Yovani was ho hum, giving up 3 ER and 8 hits in 5 IP. You mean major reconstructive surgery on a body part that has lots of money leveraged on it is not the obvious response to a sore elbow? My Google knowledge of the topic is that diagnosing discomfort in that area for a pitcher is not easy peasy, and there are lots of pitchers who rested (e.g. Andrew Miller) and came back fine....because the issue was muscle related. I think until you see a clear sign that the tendon is gone, you hope.
