How does that math work?  Mullins and Hicks adds two.  Cowser down subtracts one.  How are you bringing up Ortiz in this scenario, especially if Mateo is on the bench?

His math doesn't work. But demoting McKenna, cutting Mateo, optioning Cowser and promoting Ortiz does work. That's what I'd like to see.

I love Cowser, but get him 3 weeks of playing time at Norfolk and if he gets back to hitting well, bring him back up when rosters expand.

Are you seriously judging Ortiz as a "defensive minded SS" on his 34 plate appearances earlier this year, instead of his .983 OPS in AAA in 384 PA's in the past two seasons?  Look, I don't think Ortiz is a savior, at all... I just think he'll be a solid bat that maybe will be around a .780 OPS (like Bowie in 2022) guy with very good defense at SS.  He runs well, but agree he is not a stolen base threat, like Mateo.  I guess it comes down to what you want on your team.  A poor hitting, very good defender at SS (usually) with excellent speed and stolen base skills or a (probably) much better hitter who is very good defensively at SS, but isn't a SB threat.  In the uncommon instances that Mateo pinch runs and makes a difference, I bet Ortiz creates a bunch more value with his bat.

To your point that rookies struggle, I agree that is the case for many.  But I'm not going to assume Ortiz will struggle because Cowser has.  When a prospect is 25 years old and playing incredible ball at AAA over an extended period AND the player ahead of him on the roster is playing very poorly, well, it's time.

    Love this post.

To add on, what kind of culture do the O's want? One where there is accountability for poor performance and merit based promotion for outstanding performance? I've never known a competitive player in team sports who wanted any other culture.

While I'm as ready to move on from Mateo as others here, we shouldn't forget that Fuji beaned in 2 go-ahead runs that really cost us the game.

We beat ourselves and that's what stings the most about tonight's game.

This thread isn't about last nights loss. It's about the fact we have a guy posting a sub .600 OPS in the majors who is routinely making defensive and baserunning mistakes even though he's ostensibly here for his glove / legs AND the fact we have a player at AAA with a +glove hitting .358 with a near 1.000 OPS who is already on the 40 man who could replace him.

Mateo's lack of performance and Ortiz going 5 - 8 with two 2bs last night are just the latest reminders that we may have a better option available to us.

  4. Put Mateo thru waivers and send him back to AAA to get everyday playing time and see if he can get some semblance of his defensive game back. If he gets claimed, so be it.

Bring up Ortiz and start him. He can't be worse defensively than Mateo has been recently and he will certainly be an upgrade offensively.

    Excitement building...

What's the chance McDermott is in consideration for the rotation next season if he keeps this up?

Also, how close is McD to cracking the Top 100?

Not gonna play tonight outside of maybe on pinch hitting appearance.   Same tomorrow vs Kikuchi.   Than Gausman.   So probably has to wait to get hot until the crappy Mets rotation which is made up of washed up old guys and nobodies comes to town.   But a couple of them are lefties.

Not sure what the timetable on Hicks or Mullins is but I think if Cowser hasn't shown something at the plate by the time the first one of those guys comes off the IL, he'll be back in Norfolk.

    I'm rooting for him.

I bet he'll get some ABs after the O's knock Ryu out in the 3rd or 4th inning. :)

Don't really want to put Wells in the pen.  Maybe a week off followed by a tune-up in Bowie will set him straight and he can go back in the rotation.  Kremer seems like a nice 2 inning guy out of the pen.   I know he hasn't been bad lately but he'd probably be a lot more reliable than Baker has been in high leverage situations.

I hear you, but Wells was a dominant guy out of the pen before he moved to starter. I don't know if Kremer has ever had that kind of success from the pen.

When the idea of Flaherty was a hypothetical a couple weeks ago, I said I'd be okay with the move and still am. The price was a bit steeper than I'd like, but not completely insane. The real test will be to see what he looks like in an Orioles' uniform. If the coaches (or algorithms) identified anything that can be fixed/tweaked to yield better results--or at least continue the results he had in July. If so and he pitches like his July numbers the rest of the year, it's a good move.

He apparently has really good competitive makeup. He could benefit from the O's improved defense (Cards were #28 in DRS) and change of scenery.

Seriously.  Prieto might stick in MLB.  He’s a one trick pony and will have to hit substantially.  Rom & Showalter are long shots to to make any impact in MLB.  Good trade IMO.  We got a starter with potential upside.  Hall, Wells, Means, Fuji in pen is a substantial upgrade.  Imagine this was likely the plan all along for Hall given his set-backs earlier in the year.

And we didn't mortgage the future for a questionable return or shake up the clubhouse to much.

We're the #1 team in the AL, we got better at the trade deadline and maintained the top farm system in the game.

    Future. Bright. Shades.
