Yep, they could certainly play the control game if they wanted to, especially if Stowers hit enough to be a part-time player. McKenna helped himself out last year by hitting lefties a little bit and we know he's a solid defender wherever he plays out there. They certainly are giving McKenna lot so looks out there.

Business is still business. Elias is playing a long game. Cowser and Kjerstad could both go to Norfolk so they don't hit FA at the same time as Holliday.

Baumann I think has the pitches but his command is horrible. He leaves way too many fastballs and sliders in the middle to get hammered, and his curve is good but he can’t throw it for strikes or even consistently close enough to the strike zone to get chases. I think he generally needs command improvements across all 3 pitches, or at least WAY improved command (and through that more frequent usage) of the curve.

Wells has the command but he needs the fastball velo back so he can get away with more fastballs that leak down out of the top of the zone where he wants to live with it. And I agree he needs to figure out something better with his offspeed to have a better go-to as a RP. Probably simplify his cutter/curve/slider options to narrow to one plus option against RH and use his change way more often, especially against LH.

Im with you. Baumann's lack of command will eventually get him DFA'd this year. He's too good to make it through waivers but not good enough to stick all year

Everybody that has any level of intelligence knows John Angelos is full of Shite! And he’s a Liar ….Oops meant Lawyer. Only a politician would be dumb enough to believe he was being honest.

Lawyer is too good a word.... did he even pass the bar?

I think Mullins has worked himself into a platoon role.  If he can stay healthy he may be able to repeat his 2022  (781 OPS) vs RHP.   But his two bad seasons hitting vs lefties may have caught up to him.

I think Mateo works out in CF in ST and if he looks good he will bring his 746 OPS vs lefties in 2023 to a platoon CF role.   With Gunnar, Ortiz and Holliday on the team at some point in 2024 Mateo is probably not needed at SS but he can be useful in CF.

This makes so much sense when it comes to roster construction. Mateo playing a good centerfield would be big.

  5. I don't think there is much to see here at all. He is a depth piece (player 40) at best. He just seems like a guy that the coaches and other players love. His role is probably to make Cowser's start of the year at Norfolk not suck as much. He's here for the vibes, not the bat and glove.

  6. I'm starting to believe that the plan is to go with a "three headed monster" of Wells, Hall, and Irvin in that 5th spot and use the remaining options of Wells and Hall when they need a fresh arm. If anything Elias makes some more Jonathan Heasley moves for depth.

I wouldn't get to comfortable if I was Baumann or Jacob Webb.  Having 0 options left isn't ideal.

Santander may have improved last year from his previous two years, but he was still -1 OOA and -3 FRV.

I know everyone wants to remember a few plays by Cowser in the outfield and want to say he's a bad defender, but I've seen him a ton in the minors and he's going to be a very good corner outfielder and adequate CF fill in.

Cowser needs reps in a MLB ball park. It's not an easy adjustment due to the third deck. His jumps will get much better in time. I see him playing a lot of LF this year.

I generally stay out of the hypothetical discussions about trades because it's impossible to know what each side is thinking. That being said, I've probably read just about every comment in this thread and the back and forth. I think we all have a pretty good idea of what some of us would be "ok" with in a trade.

My question is for the folks that do not want to trade a group of prospects for a pitcher...what is your plan for all of the seemingly ready prospects? Some, not all are getting to an age where they should be given an opportunity to show if they can handle the Majors. At some point you're not only doing a disservice to the player, you're doing a disservice to the team. Value goes down with age. Just curious and trying to get some understanding from each side.

One of the things that I never worry about with Elias is that he doesn't have a plan.

I'd wager he has planned for multiple scenarios that involve getting or not getting Cease.

Will I like the plan? Maybe. Maybe not. But I feel strongly that he has a plan for every prospect in the org.

When you see that you have to think development was the bigger problem than drafting.

Friend of mine spent a year in Norfolk during the Duquette years after bouncing around a few other orgs. He said they didn't even try to develop you. He likened it to a gym teacher just rolling out basketballs and calling it a day.

No need to grab a few weeks worth of data when he has multiple seasons under his belt. If you're going to go that small with sample sizes, what was his OPS in September and October? I'll save you some time, it was horrible - literally anyone else on the roster could have put up that production. He went streaky again and basically disappeared for the last 6 weeks of the season.

He is what he is, he's a very streaky hitter with a bit of power who hasn't quite managed an .800 OPS since his rookie season (another small sample). Does it make him a whipping boy to say that?? Apparently. Maybe one day he'll start hitting the ball like some stats say he can, but I'll go with actual production, and his actual production isn't anything special.

With that being said, I'd love to see him have a monster year in 2024, but to me he isn't the guy some of you want to make him out to be. Personally (and admittedly pure speculation on my part), I think he came up with a little 1st round hype and had some success. He hit 30+ hr's in his 1st full season, got a few ROY votes, and I think he got comfortable riding on that. I just read the Buck story a few posts back - I had never heard that before but to me, it fits with my own perception of him. Obviously none of us know the entire vertigo story, but it was interesting to see him come back on absolute fire. It looked like the time in the minors might have woken him up (even though he looked pretty horrible in AAA) and he looked like the guy I've been wanting to see, and then he completely fell of the table again. Personally, I'm ready to move on...I think his production can be replaced and he's about to get more expensive. I hope he gets off to a hot start and they trade him.

I cant see where Elias is happy with the production at 1st base..... First baseman (over 350 PA) who had WRC+ more than Mountcastle and O'Hearn include guys like Brandon Belt, Wilmer Flores, Luke Raley, Triston Casas, Ryan Noda, Lamonte Wade Jr, and Christian Walker.

O'Hearn and Mountcastle only saving grace is that they are still cheap.

As much as I'd not like to agree with @Billy F-Face3about a lot of things, I do agree with his above post that JA can take credit for hiring Elias...and allowing Elias to do pretty much everything he wanted to do, especially establishing an international scouting presence which is something that didn't exist under his dad.

If anyone wants to be honest here (I question that sometimes) when it comes to JA, it's usually something like "Yeah, he hired Elias, whatever," and they move on to whatever issue JA has ensnared himself in at the moment, probably something like giving a stupid interview like he did time and time again throughout 2023.

But if Elias is one of the best things that's happened to this franchise, then JA needs to be recognized for hiring him.  And retaining him thus far.  Hiring and retaining good people isn't easy in any industry, especially in one like Major League Baseball.  @Bemorewinsyou can't look at the last two seasons we've had, the amount of talent we have in the system and say that he's run this franchise into the ground.  That's being intentionally obtuse.

I get it, a lot of people here are hammers and all they see is nails, especially when it comes to all things Angelos.  It's easy to bash them at every given turn because they've given us a lot of material to work with over the years but with JA it hasn't all been bad.  He nailed the most important part of his stewardship of the franchise, everyone should be able to agree on that.

If that makes me sound like some Angelos apologist as I'm sure @Tony-OHwill label me, well, so be it.  I've been called worse.  But I don't think I wrote any lies above.

That doesn't mean I don't think that JA is a tone deaf trouser-snake cheapskate, I absolutely do think those things.  He's terrible in front of the media, a microphone and a camera are his worst enemies.  His cries about having to raise prices if they want to spend money on talent are stupid.  He does strike me as someone who was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple, which is obnoxious.  While I give him a lot of credit for hiring Elias, I am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of the Orioles being sold and the Angelos family going away like a fart in the wind.

    This is dead on.

However, this situation is like having a team change its manager when it's out of the rebuild phase. Having an owner than truly doesn't need to support the family on the Orioles cash flow should be enough to get us to a level where we can have a chance to keep some of our own players for the long term. Owning an MLB team is a big boy proposition. The Angelos family just isn't in that league anymore.

  12. I voted yes. My theory is this offseason is the last one to get a return on Santander prior to him hitting FA. To me, a trade for MLB prospects doesn't make sense. So it's a group of 18 or 19 year old lottery scratch offs or someone already on a MLB roster.

Bieber is a FA after 24 as well. You can use the QO on him if he pitches well. I see no reasonable scenario where you use the QO on Santander.

Overall, I can see why this would make sense. I'd neither love it or hate it.

I’m not sure what Kremers trade value is.  It’s probably okay but nothing special.  Sometimes it seems you want to trade just to trade.

Here you have a 27 yo pitcher who progressed from 132 to 172 innings and did a good job overall.   He might not ever be more than a 4th starter but I’ll take a young, inexpensive 4th starter who just finished his first complete season in the majors.  Sometimes players get better.   For a pitcher like Kremer just having that first full season under his belt or possibly improving the consistency on his changeup puts him in line for a good run.

The O's rotation stayed really healthy last year. You can add 2 arms and still find plenty of innings for Kremer if the health trend doesn't hold.

The whole concept of we are definitely getting a draft pick for Santander needs to go away. That is far from a certainty.

I couldn't agree more. I appreciate Santander as much as anyone here but I can't see Elias giving a qualifying offer to a 2.5 WAR player who plays a non-premium defensive position. I believe Tony would pull a Joc Pederson and sign the qualifying offer the day it was official.
