  1. I defend when people say that ESPN "loves" or "hates" any particular team. I'm not, nor would ever dispute that they show favoritism to winning teams. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I'm not blind. I'm a Tar Heel fan, I know they get a lot of love, and i'd be an idiot in I tried to deny that.

You do realize that YOU were the one that initiated this argument in the last page, right?

  2. Jim Breuer's attempt at a comeback via Pizza Hut commercials is gonna drive me crazy.

Also, what the hell is wrong with Pizza Hut? Maybe they should spend their time and resources finding ways to make their pizzas taste better, rather than finding weird places to drop a crapload of cheese.

  3. I lament the fact that the quality that most people say they like most about me (I'm honest and don't sugar coat things) is also the quality that gets me in trouble at work...especially since it was how I was raised. I mean, I understand, ...but at the same time, I'm penalized for honesty. The worst part is that it forces me to try to find a way to remain honest without it reflecting badly...that's tough.

    The John understands you:

“It has always seemed strange to me,” said Doc. “The things we admire in men — kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding, and feeling — are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest — sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism, and self-interest — are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first, they love the produce of the second.”
  4. Yeah, go recover your important .doc type stuff, leave the music, you can get that again later. Scrap it while you can (recover). Have you bought things or paid with your CC on this computer? If you have or filled anything out online with your SSN I would make a priority of doing this sooner than later. When viruses are doing things like that they are disabling any way for you to shut them down and get rid of them, any virus that smart is up to no good behind the scenes too. Try to take care of it as soon as possible. Also if you can help it, don't reboot or power off the comp, a lot of these things go active and transmit stuff on reboot, so you want to leave it where it is. Just disable it from the internet and go from there.

Man, I wish I read this before I rebooted a couple times. I lost my internet connection, and I'm on a different computer now.

Pardon me for not really understanding, but how do I recover my music after reformatting? I can't even reformat until I find an XP disc somewhere, I have no idea where I put mine. And I found cheap 16 GB flash drives on newegg ($30), so I'm kinda hoping I can order that in time. If I just don't touch my computer for a few days, will that keep me relatively safe? I'm crazy about keeping my files.

I've bought tons of things with the laptop, and also used my SSN. I was under the impression that the spyware I'm getting is just trying really hard to take my money. That changes things a bit.

I can't thank you guys enough for helping me out... if I could give more rep, I would (everyone reading this should!)

  5. How much stuff you looking in terms of size? External memory is cheap so you might be able to get a memory stick large enough to hold the vital stuff. Just insert into USB and click and drag. After you reformat, you *should* be able to use your new anti-virus to clean the files on the stick if any are infected.

If you are willing to spend you could take it to a professional. Odds are good that they can save the data you need saved as well as do the actual reformatting.

If you have the cash to spend I would send it out at this point. Ask around for a reputable and reasonable shop in your area.

Yeah, I'd go buy an 8GB flash drive ($40) and you should have enough room for all your .doc stuff and most of the mp3 depending on how many you have. How do you get your mp3? Bit Torrent or iTunes? If you are just DLing them from a p2p site, I'd be really concerned my virus is in there somewhere and just let them go. If they are purchased stuff, they should be safe.

Then wipe it and run AV on your flash drive just in case. Professionals are expensive, this is probably worth a shot before you shell out $150-200 bucks. If you don't have that many mp3 or anything you could get a smaller flash drive for less money.

The files are basically 14+ GB, mostly music. I think the virus came from a torrented file, but I'm leaving all that behind.

And funnily enough, a couple hours after I made that last post, we seem to have entered the *third* stage! After rebooting, I can no longer open Mozilla... it crashes immediately. I'm using some very frustrating IE. My wallpaper disappeared again, it's now at "active desktop recovery," but I'm not too worried about that. It's not letting me go to Facebook, says it's "restricted." And I'm getting popups again, from "Windows Antivirus Pro," though they look different.

The part that worries me is that I can't ctrl-alt-del. I get a popup saying "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator." I'm never downloading anything again.

  6. MP3s mostly. Everything in My Docs, which is mostly Word files. Why sacrifice some and not others? Because I won't find enough space to back them up or because some may be infected?

  7. An update about my computer, to those who were helping me before...

Well, nothing I tried worked. The viruses stopped me from opening in safe mode. After a few days, it seemed to enter the "next level" of the virus or whatever, and everything changed: I no longer got any popups (which was great), but I couldn't open anything at all except for internet browsers, MSWord and maybe a couple other things. Whenever I try to open anything else, I get a black and blue DOS-esque box with a header that ends in desot.exe (which disappears after a second).

Since then, I haven't really been bothered by it... the only big problem for me is that I can't adjust my volume (it's a desot), and I left it on mute, so I don't have audio. I've been terribly busy and lazy, so I've just been dealing with it.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can actually do to fix it at this point, I just want to back all my stuff up and reformat.

My questions are: because I can't open any programs, I can't back anything up via data CDs. I thought that I would use an online service like Mozy, but you have to download the program, and I can't open it. Are there any services that just allow you to upload mass files to the internet (I'm willing to spend $) without having to download anything? Like a really big Box.com account?

If I do that, is there a chance that the virus/spyware will follow the uploaded files?

And failing that, would setting up some GMail accounts and mailing everything to myself work?

Thanks for any help. There should really be a Tech Support thread.

  8. First off, thanks for all the help everyone... I'm a bit computer-tarted (but not illiterate) so you might have to bear with me.

Have you run Lavasoft Ad-Aware too?

Does Spybot find them but not clear them? Or does it just not find them at all?

I haven't run Lavasoft but I've done Malwarebytes... (more on that later)

And Spybot just doesn't find them. Nor does my antivirus.

    Try Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    That should do the trick.

Yeah, but it doesn't work. I think it actually finds the problems, but after a scan I'm told that it can't fix these:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Settings\bf

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Settings\bk

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Settings\iu

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Settings\mu

    c:\documents and settings\zachary\local settings\temp\jdhceuld.dat

And then it says that I have to reboot, and it'll delete them once I do. That doesn't happen. I run it again, reboot again, etc, same message every time.

(I've tried deleting the last one, because I can find it, but it doesn't let me, saying it's currently being accessed etc)

Before I go into my post, I think can of corn is right and you should DL and run Malwarebytes and see if that works. If it doesn't work then the problem gets more complex. I've had to deal with my share of spyware so here's a few tidbits.

    1. Is the juice worth the squeeze? I once had to work on a system for about 10 hours trying to remove a trojan off a PC for a family member because that family member turned off System Restore. If you have System Restore turned on and you know when the spyware first infected your PC, restore to an earlier date and be done with it. If it still reappears then try advanced spyware removal techniques.

    2. Sometimes you can try every piece of anti-spyware in the book (which can take an hour+ easy per each one) and still not solve your problem. To solve my family member's issue I had to find a good process management program, suspend/turn off a lot of processes, then run anti-spyware and it finally came off. If you have no idea was a process is, what the standard Windows processes are or where to find a good process management program... then you're better off not trying this.

    3. Whatever you did to get that spyware... don't do it again. :)

    1. I have no idea if I have System Restore turned on (or how to find out if I do), I've definitely never used it.

    2. I sort of understand, as someone else told me to just go down the "Processes" list when I ctrl-alt-del, shutting each one down until the popups stop so I can see where it's coming from. Is that what you mean? I haven't tried it yet, and I wouldn't know what to do if it worked.

And to be honest, how long since you've reformatted? PC's do really need a clean format after awhile. Back up your important stuff, make sure you got your .exe's readily accessible, and format and clean install Windows again.

I've never reformatted, and I've never backed anything up save for a lot of important files that I've mailed to myself. I'd be a lot more keen on reformatting if I could back my stuff up first, but the backup program I have isn't opening (like most of my programs). Would the spyware infect the backups anyway?

    Again, thanks everyone.

  9. Laptop's been taken over by so much spyware, all at once, mostly "Windows Antivirus Pro" and "Windows Security Center." I keep running Search and Destroy, and every time it finds loads of new spyware but nothing about those two. My antivirus doesn't pick them up at all. It's getting pretty annoying.

  10. Currently re-reading Half-Blood Prince so I'll be able to pinpoint all the reasons I'll hate the movie. :P After that it's Becker's The Denial of Death, per a suggestion in this forum actually, and then maybe Howard's End and Breakfast of Champions (which I've been meaning to read for several years).

  11. They're not pedophiles. They're after sex with underage teenagers. That's not pedophilia.

Pedophiles are after little kids who haven't hit puberty yet. Different thing.

I apologize to any pedophiles I might have offended. :P

  12. Agreed, but does that hold up in court? It just seems like it'd be hard to get a conviction.

    Does it really matter?

I know jail is the absolute worst for child abusers, but I bet plenty of the pedophiles on the show would rather go there than have their secret unveiled on primetime network television.

And is it even legal to show their faces on television without their consent? Perhaps the show knows full well that they're not going to get convicted of anything, and basically bribes the pedos by paying their legal expenses. I know that's how it works with shows like The Peoples' Court -- they pay for all the expenses in exchange for the right to the trial. If that's the case with Dateline, maybe a lot of these guys rather would show their faces on TV than end up in prison.

  13. "Dr." I think you flatter yourself. You actually think morons like the losers who post 3000, 10000, 17000+ times on this board (talk about real winners here) would get away with the kind of crap they throw around on this board.

You say something they don't agree with and you're all of a sudden an idiot. Tell me who in the real world wouldn't get in someone's face if they said that to them.

I live in LA. Many places in this city you idiots- yes all of you who posted insults on this thread are truly morons, idiots - many places in this city you wouldn't be walking home, that's for sure. Even in provincial Baltimore, I'm sure there might be someone who'd ask you to reconsider your comments in a most insistent manner.

I wasn't threatening anyone as you well know, troublemaking fool. I was pointing out that if these idiots said the things to me to my face, we'd be having a different conversation and you know it. That's life.

Just like if anyone said these things to you or to them.

Well I leave your oriole soviet to you fascist, moronic, closed minded provincial fools who love the local faded-hero from a bygone era.

I really hope that by the time this is all over, you realize that people don't think you're an idiot for disliking Palmer when plenty of members here have shared that same opinion in the past, but rather, people think you're an idiot for believing that any person should value your opinion on an O's broadcaster while you didn't even realize that Palmer's booth partner wasn't a long-dead Hall of Fame pitcher. That's all there is to it, bub!

Now please, call me a moron over the internet, for surely that is the pinnacle of "cool."

  14. I only like the broadcasting when Palmer does it. He gives tons of insight and isn't afraid to call a player out.

Plus he's got an absolutely quick mind and wit

Me too. I prefer him to everyone in the organization, save for Angel. I learn a lot of things I didn't know about the game, and more importantly, he's entertaining as all hell. Just a funny guy.

And I was born several years after he retired.

  15. I'm not sure what you're talking about " a few days ago". Not like I come on here every day if it was. Clearly some people need to get a life.

Again, you reject reason and choose to fight. What I told you was the truth. Just because someone posts something 3 days ago even to a comment i made doesn't mean I read it. OK. I know that's a hard concept for you to grasp.

Love how you keep telling me to stop attacking as you make incendiary comments.

This is masterful. He admonishes Moose for "choosing to fight" just one sentence after saying he "needs to get a life." Wow.

I'm really surprised he doesn't have two red pips yet.

  16. I mean, I guess anything's possible. I don't know them. But there are a few reasons I think it isn't:

    1) It's an older couple, an elderly woman, and 2 dogs. Not your normal profile for meth dealers.

    2) The fires seem to have both started in the second-floor living room. Not a usual place to cook meth.

    3) With all the volatile chemicals you need, I think there would have been a big explosion. There wasn't. Just a ton of smoke and some burned up walls.

My best guess is an electrical issue. Why whatever it was wasn't fixed adequately after the first fire, I don't know. Their homeowner's insurance is going to skyrocket.

If they're related to Joba Chamberlain it's a pretty normal profile.

  17. I can think of a specific poster that over-utilizes them.

Yeah, and this is the one time I really hate them. He basically exclusively uses them at the end of every single post, because he wants us to think he's posting right before he drifts off to sleep...

    ...

    ...

    ...

    ...

  18. "Put it in me, Steve."

Stop it, Quiznos. That's disgusting. I do not want to hear an oven making creepy, unsubtle sexual euphemisms about food during my commercial breaks. If I had kids, I would be Helen Lovejoy-ing the crap out of you.
