  1. This may be a bit too close to home but am I the only one a little annoyed with everyone jumping on the smallest details of the new board? The orange is too bright, the header is too big, the words are too small, yadda yadda yadda. It's wonderful that the staff is receptive to the common suggestions and complaints of the community but some people are acting like this new format is a deal-breaker and their minor quibbles with the board should shoot right to the top of Tony's priorities. Take a second to appreciate the fact that you have a freakin' miracle of a machine in front of you, a wonder of technology that allows you to discuss your relatively meaningless obsession with other passionate fans all around the world. I wouldn't have half the baseball knowledge I do without this place and I couldn't care less what it looks like, the community is what makes it.

While I agree with the sentiment of your rant, I also understand where some of the posters are coming from. The orange is still just a little too bright and I find myself squinting at the screen. It's much, much improved from the bright orange/white text-box, but the contrast is still a little harsh and I can see why it would be especially harder on some of the older posters with more sensitive eyes. It's a testament to what a great community we have here that these posters are frustrated; they want to continue to contribute but also don't want to have to cope with headaches just to do so. I appreciate all the hard work the staff is putting into the site and understand there are going to be some aches and pains during the transfer, but I don't think all of the complaining is unwarranted, though a little more tact would probably help their cause.

Anyways, my short rant: Opening day vendors.

  2. I had a recent conversation in which several friends argued A Moveable Feast might be Hemingway's best. I haven't read it.

The Grapes of Wrath is a must read for so many reasons. I'm actually pretty stunned it wasn't previously mentioned.

I love A Moveable Feast. That and especially In Our Time are my favorites from Hemingway. I'm not too big on his novels, although I did like The Sun Also Rises.

I can't stand the Grapes of Wrath, but I think I'm in the minority on this one. In fact, I don't like much Steinbeck at all, except his short story The Murder, which I love.

  3. Suffers the same problems as a lot of his novels. But it's pretty great at times, too. Reminds me a little bit of Affliction (in the intersection of insanity and mystery/suspense/conspiracy).

It reminded me a lot of White Noise, although I prefer Johnson over Delillo.

I haven't read Affliction. Do you recommend it?

  4. For some reason I had never read Suttree by Cormac McCarthy. I recently read it, and it knocked my socks off. The prose is glorious, and it's probably his funniest novel. The first three pages are astonishing.

Took me awhile to get through it, but I enjoyed it.

  5. Jim Breuer's attempt at a comeback via Pizza Hut commercials is gonna drive me crazy.

Also, what the hell is wrong with Pizza Hut? Maybe they should spend their time and resources finding ways to make their pizzas taste better, rather than finding weird places to drop a crapload of cheese.

This is a great point. I think they're still stuck in the early 90s. People are more health conscious now - does Pizza Hut really think people want cheese injected into every possible pizza orifice? Some do, I'm sure, but it's certainly not a good long-term business model.

  6. There's a deli in walking distance from my house that used to have great chicken salad. But they recently changed the recipe, and now it's disgusting. Thanks.

  7. Can anyone tell me the name of the book that's about minor league players? I think it's nonfiction account from the sixties or so by a career minor leaguer that apparently could write up a storm. I read about it, but can't remember the name. I've heard it's very good though.

Someone recommended this to me: Suder by Percival Everett

All I know is it's about a third basemen for the Seattle Mariners. I've heard it's good, but I'm not sure. Haven't read it yet.
