This is like being a kid on Christmas morning. After weeks of anticipation and buildup, you open all your presents and ask "is that it?"

Really? It was?
I know what the trade was about. They got pennies on the dollar for the slot money. They had been better served getting another actual asset.
How many pennies on the dollar did ATL get when they dumped Gausman? What actual asset did the Reds get for Gausman?

I still contend it was poor process to trade for international slot money without the intent to use it. The return the O's received on the slot money was lacking.
The center-piece of the Gausman trade was dumping O'Day's salary. Slot money was a throw-in since ATL couldn't use it.

Many OHers were critical of the Gausman trade when it went down. In hindsight, it was a clear win for O's. $$$ saved made trade worthwhile. Getting a prospect like Zimmermann was a bonus.
Give this trade a year and see how it shakes out.

I'd put this trade in the Gausman/O'Day salary dump category.
That was a great trade for the O's. Dollar savings aside, Zimmermann is a legit prospect and the O's got a lot more for Gausman than the Braves did when they dumped him and, most recently, when the Reds dumped him. I'm hoping this trade works out equally as well.

I say they should remove first 10 rows in outfield, move fences back

The catching situation seems pretty set.
Sisco/Severino platoon. Wynns good defensive catcher with a patient eye. Hopefully Cumberland and Cervenka stay healthy so we can see if they are anything. Rutschman finishes in Bowie I’d say. Maybe a Sucre/Perez type is added to round out the upper minors.
Agreed. I don;t see catching situation as a priority. It's all about the pitching. If you throw a ball waist-high middle of plate, it doesn't matter whose catching.

I'm all for it. Was just offering an opinion to the question of "why not" offer the full remainder of our slot to what anonymous scouts equate to a second round talent.
Anonymous scouts thought Hobgood was a first round talent.

Went to see a fight the other night and a damn baseball game broke out.

That's fine. I just think it's naive to think that they just included him for free. Honestly I'm more bummed about the Gausman deal because he was rumored to have other suitors (at the time) like the Pirates. That one really seems like a wasted trade chip to me.
Kinda like all the rumored suitors we had for Givens a couple weeks ago.

Cashner got shelled last night. 5.2 IP, 7 ER, 5 BB.

The team payroll is around $72M this year. Gausman and O'Day are both making $9M this season, so it wouldn't have been north of $100M. It would have been around $92M, which would still have been the fifth lowest payroll in MLB. The only people that gained from the salary relief were the owners. That's it. There's zero indication that the money has been reinvested back into the team. Zero.
Hired Elias, Sig, Koby Perez. Signed 27 players during international signing period. I'd say decent investment so far.

I am not pounding the table, but the thinking is that we could have gotten a little more if O'Day's salary wasn't in the deal. I don't really care if our payroll makes us a laughingstock any more than we already are. Some people don't want salary dumping to cause us to accept B-C prospects for an established MLB starting pitcher with a 98 MPH FB. Even if it looks good in retrospect due to Gausman underperforming, that doesn't make it a good deal.
Gausman is not underperforming. He's performing like a #4 - which is what he is. A 98 MPH FB means nothing at the MLB level if you can't locate.

-1.1 WAR, 5.97 ERA...yes, he would be our number two. But then I could be our number two this year lol.
I didn't like the trade after Gausman's first few starts with Braves last year but it now appears to be a fair deal. O'Day will probably never throw a single pitch in a Braves uni, Gausman is regressing back to the Gausman we knew and the LHP we received (Zimmerman) looks like he may become a valuable member of the bullpen. Even trade, nothing to complain about.

KC got nothing for Diekman. I expect we'll get a couple 18 y.o. lottery tickets for Givens. I'll be surprised if anyone else gets traded.

First visit to Tides game on Monday 07/01. Walked up to window and scored 2 front row seats b/h visitors dugout for $15/each. Parking was $5 and the stadium is a bit off the beaten path - quite some distance from the downtown area bars. Guess we're spoiled going to games at the Yard. Beers not cheap. $11 for a 16 oz. Can of Heinekin. Food consisted of standard fare, nothing to crow about. There was one BBQ stand that looked pretty good however.
Tides were awful. Witherspoon got rocked by Gwinett. Gave up 3 taters in 4+ innings. Tides batters were outmatched. Don't think Mullins or Mountkastle hit one out of the infield against multiple Braves pitchers. Rest of team looked like typical anonymous O's rejects. Swung at bad pitches and struck out at an alarming rate.
All in all, great night at the ballpark. Highly recommended if you're planning a visit to Va Beach this summer. Remember to always buy a game program if you go. They have give aways after every inning.

Yup, don't miss Gausman. Actually, 8 earned runs for him tonight.
And the Braves have paid O'Day $9MM+ to rehab. Yet to throw a single pitch with the Braves.

Big game against a tough team. Typical Gausman.

I agree. The trade was all about dumping salary.
Agree also. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. O'Day was set to make $9M next year and there's no need for a $9M RP on a rebuilding team. Additionally, no telling what kinda pitcher O'Day will be next year. Hasn't looked great since 2015, another year older next year, coming off significant injury.

Gausman pitching tonight in big series against the Brewers. Looks like it'll be broadcast on MLBN.

Im pleased with what Ive seen so far...but in my view theres ultimately no way the Orioles got a better player in that package than Schoop. I saw Jonathan in LA when they played the Dodgers. He asked me why the Dodgers would trade him for (among others)an infielder that is older than he is, and I didn't have a great answer.I told him that I thought it was a money thing. He just shrugged.
Sorry but I don't have any sympathy for Jonathan. The correct answer should have been "you got traded b/c baseball is business and the O's, right or wrong, made a business decision. You can't expect a team to be loyal when, once you have leverage, will not display loyalty in return."

Perhaps it's a players union thing?
Otherwise, Elias would have Davis in a mandatory, structured hitting program from October to February.
