  1. Had some really bad turnovers, our guards need to be better with the ball, particularly Young.  Overall gotta be pleased though, team showed tons of grit.  Reese balled out, cleaned up the glass like crazy.  Had a silly foul down the stretch but hey he will learn.

Good result, having a NCAA tournament win this season is a big positive.  Playing with house money at this point, go play Alabama hard and see what happens.

  2. Young and Scott carry the team.  When they aren't scoring they don't win, plain and simple.  Scott in particular has been erratic all year, started hot then gradually faded.  As I said way back at the beginning of the year, the team isn't deep enough to really challenge.  Hart and Carey aren't top tier players, and their bench is thin.  That Penn State loss last week really pissed me off, because that is a game they should have won and it would given them an extra round bye.

Rest up, come into the NCAA tournament with a fresh perspective, who knows what can happen.  No expectations.

  3. We are going to see how good of a coach Willard is during these next few weeks.  If this team flames out with consecutive losses in the B1G and NCAA tournament this season will be considered kind of a failure imo.  Donta Scott needs to figure out his game, he has been forcing lots of bad shots the last several games.  Luckily Reese has stepped up in his absence.

As far as next season, I am hoping at least two of the Young/Scott/Hart/Carey quadrant get a Covid exemption and return for another season.  At least either Young or Scott.  The incoming freshmen (Harris-Smith, Kaiser, Lamothe) can all make an impact, but they are freshman obviously and need some time to find their games.  Braden Piere a seven footer will also be coming in, but I don't see him getting much playing time.  Martinez, Batchelor, Cornish, and Long will likely be seeing many more minutes.  I am guessing there might be a transfer somewhere, both leaving and incoming, because there always is.

This is their year to make some noise, guessing next year will be a bit of a downturn.

  4. I'm afraid this team is about to come crashing back to earth.  Don't have the size or depth to compete with the top tier teams.  Once Reese went out with his third foul the first half was a rout.

Young, Hart, and Carey are too streaky as shooters.  Can't have off games like that on a regular basis.

  5. What a win.  Jahmir Young has the goods, he has handles and makes great decisions with the ball.  Is super quick and has driving ability along with a nice shot - that 3 he hit was gigantic.  Donta Scott has upped his game tremendously, he can score at all three levels, he's great with his footwork and back to the basket.

Wish this team had a little more size, that's really their only downfall.  Reese is a little unpredictable on offense but he plays great defense and hustles.  I like him a lot.  Also need some more bench scoring as we progress into conference play.

  6. So cool seeing them raise that trophy!  Team looks happy, amazing what winning can do.

Team moves the ball around so well, quick passes, no prolonged dribbling, standing around watching 1-1 play.  Amazing what good coaching can do as well.  Julian Reese has taken some big steps already, he looks stronger and more confident.  Elevated his entire game.  This team can shoot!  Dominated the boards.  Nice win.  Gotta cut down on the turnovers.  Cornish isn't getting much playing time, I predict he will transfer after the season, too bad.  I hope he doesn't.

  7. It's  a joke of a season.  As I predicted early on, their lack of depth is apparent, there is literally no one off the bench that can make a difference with the possible exception of Reese, and his game is still raw (he really lacks touch and strength near the rim).  Martinez has provided close to nothing, he has had a few flashes but his game is lacking big time.  All 5 starters lack chemistry and overall offensive movement.  It's like they go into every offensive possession with no idea what play to run or who will shoot.  A lot of isolation drives with horrible forced shots.  Definitely difficult to watch.  I am a Georgetown fan as  well and Wahab has regressed.  Horrible foot work and lack of conditioning.  Ayala is a shell of his former self and is not suited to be a #1 scorer.

I'd say it is a combination of bad coaching and lack of talent.  Unless they bring in a great coach, Maryland could be approaching some dark days of being completely uncompetitive.  Will make Turgeon seem like John Wooden.  They need someone who is great at recruiting, motivation, game planning, in game adjustments, everything.  The incoming recruiting class is weak as hell (only one signee so far).  Gonna need Reese and Cornish to develop big time.

  8. Lost to Northwestern today.  Can't go 17-59 from the field and expect to win games.  Don't know what type of chances Manning has of turning this season around, probably not much.  Still a way to go, but starting to look like a lost season.  I'm worried tons of guys will bolt after this season - Reese and Cornish mainly.  Ayala has regressed his entire career.  Russell just isn't that good.

  9. It was time.  I don't have much analysis, I am more of the type of fan who just enjoys watching the games.  It was clear Turgeon wasn't much of an in-game coach.  He had his moments, but his teams never seemed to respond well to him, particularly this year.  I liked the guy, he could just never get the job done, many March flops.  I do wish we had a chance to play with that Jalen Smith/Cowan/Wiggins 2019 team.  That was a pretty good team.

Maryland may not be a top 25 coaching destination anymore, but it isn't far behind.  Top 40 at the very least.  Large fan base, nice facilities, fertile recruiting ground.  I pray they find a good young coach who can bring some energy to the program.

  10. Worst shooting team I have ever seen.  Russell should never take another 3 ever again.  Really dumb turnovers too, the team had a chance to build on their lead a few times but kept throwing it out of bounds like fools.  Then they couldn't guard the 3 even though that is obviously what Virginia Tech does best.

  11. Just saw my first game of the season vs. Hofstra.  Right now the team is not playing with confidence.  Russell is more of a distributor than scorer, which is fine, but he is so quick I'd like to see him drive more.  The game plan was horrible, we should have been feeding Wahab and Reese down low all game with Hofstra not having a center.  Wahab didn't play at all the second half which didn't make sense to me.  Bad shot selection, dumb turnovers, can't have that.

I do think the team has talent, you can't say they are void of that.  Ayala is an above average scorer, he can shoot the 3 and has a good driving game (he had a huge shot at the end of the game), plus he plays good defense.  I like Martinez off the bench, he is a long energetic guard.  Reese looks like a very good player, tons of size and plays good defense.  Scott is a do it all guy.  They may not be Final 4 worthy, but this is a tournament team.  My concern is their depth, or should I say lack thereof.  I don't know what happened to Graham or Cornish, but apparently they aren't playing right now.  Hart doesn't contribute that much imo, he can occasionally hit a 3 like he did tonight, but he isn't a guy who can create his own shot.  Green and Dziuba are JAGS.

I've defended Turgeon because he seems like he has a smart basketball mind and strong positive personality, but in the end results are what matters and there hasn't been much success.  He just got a contract extension though, so he will be here for a while.  I don't like how next year's recruiting class is looking, only one commitment so far (Klintman) and no other top prospects.  Desmond Claude is my hopeful target, we are going to need a PG.

I really don't think Ayala or Scott are going anywhere.  Hart and Hamilton will have to fight for Morsell's minutes, but there's room for everyone.

There's a lot of smoke around the rumor that Wiggins has already decided to go.  If he gets drafted his stock won't be any higher than it is now.  There is almost no benefit to sticking around for 4 years if you have the talent to get drafted.  Even if he doesn't make it in the NBA he could play in Europe.

I can't knock Wiggins for leaving, I suppose his stock is as about as high as it will get.  Perhaps he could come back and play even better, elevating him into first round territory?  I guess there is always a risk of injury.  If he wants to go play overseas and make some money then more power to him.  I think he needs to get stronger and work a bit on his driving game, plus make that jumper more consistent.  Very talented young man.

Jagwar, I believe you are correct, I also would love to see Morsell come back.  Not sure what his basketball plans are, I am sure there is a league out there that he could play in.  Dude gives 110% every game.  I am excited about next year, I think there could be some serious talent and depth on the squad.  All depends on how Turgeon develops and utilizes it though.  I have not written him off as a legitimate coach yet, although my faith is waning.

  13. Qudus Wahab and Fatts Russell committed to Maryland today in the transfer portal.  Two amazing additions by Turgeon.

Interested to see if Ayala, Wiggins, or Scott leave.  I don't see any of them getting drafted.  It seems like there is always a transfer on every team every year, so we will see.  If everyone returns this team will be stacked.

  14. Couldn't defend Alabama plain and simple.  They were too quick and shot the lights out.  They also dominated rebounding.

Terps need to recruit some big physical big men to guard the rim and rebound.  I'd like to see Marial develop next year, it is pointless having a player with his size on the bench.  Also hoping Julian Reese comes ready to play immediately.  Finally gonna need a primary ball handler who can distribute.  I like Ayala and really liked how he stepped his game up, but he's more of a 2.  Ike Cornish is billed as a SG as well.

I don't hate Turgeon like most people but I agree the results have been lukewarm at best.  I am fine hiring someone else after his contract expires.  I think he has done a good job recruiting talent, developing that talent and coming up with game plans to get the most out of that talent is another story.

  15. I totally missed this thread. I agree the officiating was horrible. Giving up tons of offensive rebounds in the first half really annoyed me. Gonna have to box out and crash the boards against Alabama.

Keys to victory are defense and three point shooting. I liked some of the cuts to the basket, those back to back slams by Scott and Wiggins were a thing of beauty. Wiggins has had several rim rattlers this year.

  16. I said if the Terps played solid defense they could win, and that is precisely what they did!  Amazing defensive intensity!  About the only thing they didn't do well was rebound, if they did they could have won by 20.  How good has Eric Ayala been these past several weeks?  He has been driving strong and shooting amazingly well.  Him and Wiggins were sharp from beyond the arc.  When they shoot like that and play lock down defense they can beat anybody.

I think UConn is under-ranked at 7 and I'm not feeling great about this matchup.  On the other hand, if we can get past them, I think Bama is beatable.

That said, Bouknight is questionable so if he doesn't play or isn't 100% it opens things up a bit.

Oh I didn't know Bouknight was questionable, that is a critical factor.  I don't really feel great about the matchup either, I was looking at the stats and UConn is good defensively as well.  We all know Maryland has times where they are completely stagnant offensively.  It all comes down to the 3 ball imo.  If we are hitting them we are good.  Then it will be up to Morsell and company to wreak havoc defensively and get some turnovers.

Alabama may be beatable (every team is), but I actually like them to make the Final 4 believe it or not.  I watched them earlier in the year as well as the SEC championship game against LSU and they absolutely light it up from beyond the arc and elsewhere.  They run up and down the court too.  I think they are dangerous.  They do have some limitations defensively though, so...anything is possible!

  18. Playing #7 Connecticut.  I only saw them play a few times this year, Bouknight is a dangerous scorer.  They have a couple big dudes that can bang down low.  They seem to shoot the ball fairly well, but that can change if Maryland plays solid defense.  We'll see.

  19. Well they played really well for about 16 minutes, then they let the game get away from them.  Stopped hitting 3s and stopped playing defense.  Michigan took advantage of our lack of size and abused us inside.  Juwan Howard and Turgeon had a little tiff and Howard got ejected.  Maryland responded but then Michigan just started hitting every shot.  They are a dangerous team, I expect them to win the Big 10 tourney and make a run to the Final 4.

On to the NCAA.  If they can win a single game I will be impressed.  The fact that they are even there is impressive.
